The Bauhaus was a design school formed in Germany that was one of the major movements in design in the 20th century. Bauhaus buildings are made out of geometric shapes and are usually cubic shapes. Some buildings feature rounded corners and balconies. The buildings have open floor plans. The colours that are used in bauhaus are red, blue and yellow. It was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century. it was an approach to teaching, understanding art and relationship to society and technology. Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. The bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence.

Finished in 1971, the addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art, designed by Marcel Breuer, adds several different programmatic spaces to the museum. The Expansion added the new north entrance, lobby space, classrooms, lecture halls, an auditorium and additional gallery space (Dodd, Mead, and Company 80). The Breuer wing of the museum was done in the Bauhaus style of architecture. The Bauhaus according to Burton Wasserman was more than just clean-cut modern design; it was a place where more powerful ideas and creative action were vigorously generated by talented and lively people (Wasserman). Breuer worked in the Bauhaus style for most of his architecture career.
...several artistic techniques. These pieces of art are showcased in an environment where they can be enjoyed by amateurs and expert art lovers alike. All of the architects mentioned joined together not only the modern architectural techniques of their time, as well as the famous styles of the past to create Museum buildings that became their own pieces of art.
Throughout the years, technology has changed the way live. This has included the way we build magnificent buildings. Old wonders like the Pyramids at Giza have fascinated people for years. There is another building concept that has attracted people’s attention for ages as well, domes.
When an architect is influenced they create. They make what they see in their mind. But people could always improve what they’ve already created. Homes at one point were only one story houses. But suddenly to someone’s mind they thought homes should be two stories or even three. Back in High School, most of my classmates wanted to become architects and they’d be asked how they were influenced to draw a blueprint like the one they had. Some would respond with “I saw this house that had this this and this and I really liked it so I put it into my home.” Meaning they would be inspired by a home that was already
Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries, the Modernist movement arose as a result of protest against and rejection of traditional art forms. Modernism grew increasingly popular, and was evident through architecture, the visual arts, literature, social and political structure, behavior and faith. There were a variety of movements within the Modernist period, including Futurism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism and the Bauhaus. The Dada movement grew from political backlash of World War I, and essentially rejected all prior established reason and logic, ultimately recreating art in a never-before-seen irrational way. As well as being anti-war, this controversial art movement rejected the bourgeois and also had strong political associations with the radical left. Similarly, Modernism also largely impacted upon the Bauhaus. The Bauhaus was a school of fine arts and crafts, established in Germany after their defeat in World War I, and is largely considered to be the most influential institution of art and design of its time. These movements can be clearly identified through artworks of that time, such as Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917), symbolic of Dadaism, and Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus Building constructed in 1925-26.
The Bauhaus was a school in Weimer, Germany. It was founded in 1919 by a German architect named Walter Gropius. The goal behind the Bauhaus was to bring the arts together into a new age of modern art or, as Gropius described, “Architects, sculptors, painters, we must all get back to craft” (Borteh). Gropius expressed this idea in the Proclamation of the Bauhaus, a document by Gropius that stated the Bauhaus was a “utopian craft guild” that combined architecture, sculpture, and painting (Wilson). This idea attracted many highly experienced staff members.
Hovering above are pillars of concrete and stone. Its rise and collapse determined by history. A combination of art and science designed to create notorious architecture. The necessity for architecture is distant from extinction and continuously transforming itself with the duration of time creating innovative methods of portraying scenic and functional works of art. The Romans and Greeks established a foundation for architecture that maintains its reputation as remarkable acts of beauty.
The Bauhaus was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century as it laid many foundations for design theory and helped us understand the importance of art in relation to society and technology. Although the school was in operation only between 1919 and 1933, it was a major influence in the fields of architecture, graphic design, typography, industrial design and interior design long after it has closed.
"Gravity-defying", "fragmentary" and "revolutionary" are a few of the words used to describe Zaha Hadid's architectural designs. The Iraqi-born, London-based architect has stirred up continual controversy with her designs that defy a label in the Modern vs. Post-Modern architectural debate. In the past 15 years, she has gone from unknown student to "architecture's new diva" as the title of the January 1996 Architectural DigestUs profile suggested. Her work has been accepted as a significant contribution to architecture and her style is one that other architects now emulate.
Art Deco and Bauhaus are two of the most influential art styles that influenced modern America today. From the avant-garde decorations and design that is still present in Los Angeles, to the flat roof design and simplicity of houses and shops that can be seen almost anywhere, these two designs are still present in our communities. The two movements do have some comparative similarities, but are also very different in design and concept. One should now be able to distinguish the similarities and differences between Art Deco and
In order to create innovative public architecture, considered to be the most civic, costly, time intensive and physical of the arts, the project holds a degree of risk, strife, and negotiation . Overcoming these tasks and creating worthy public architecture is a challenge designers try to accomplish, but are rarely successful. The people involved in a potential public building, can be larger than the building itself. Public architecture tries to please all, even the doubters and critics, but because of the all these factors, a building is closer to failing than succeeding.
The essence of modern architecture lays in a remarkable strives to reconcile the core principles of architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. However, it took “the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification, to establish modernism as a distinctive architectural movement” (Robinson and Foell). Although, the narrower concept of modernism in architecture is broadly characterized by simplification of form and subtraction of ornament from the structure and theme of the building, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose; the visual expression of the structure, particularly the visual importance of the horizontal and vertical lines typical for the International Style modernism, the use of industrially-produced materials and adaptation of the machine aesthetic, as well as the truth to materials concept, meaning that the true nat...
The ideology of the Bauhaus was conceived when Walter Gropius, a German architect, sought for a unification of the arts through craft. Gropius wanted to end the division between industry and art by training students equally in both crafts and fine arts. In 1919, the Weimar Academy of Arts and the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts merged together into what is known as the Bauhaus, or “house of construction.” Walter Gropius was appointed director and described the school as “a utopian craft guild combining architecture, sculpture, and painting into a single creative expression” in his Proclamation of the Bauhaus. Gropius soon developed a curriculum in which he combin...
Art is an expression of feelings, body language, culture produced by humans. Art can be expressed in many different ways, and in many different forms from times periods way before you think! You’d be amazed with the different type of skilled work artist come up with each day and it’s all just someone, one person expressing how they feel or what they believe. One form of art that I find very interesting particular is Fauvism. Fauvism is an expressionism that is expressed by art, music literature. This type of art is the spiritually and emotional vision of the world in Artist eyes. Fauvism was a short-lived movement; it lasted only from the time period of 1905-1908. In my opinion based off of how appealing it was it could have been longer. It originated in France. Artist who produced this type of art work were called fauves, French for “wild beast” because they were described to use intense colors, uncontrollably.
Behind every architectural work there is an architect, whether the architect is one man or woman, a small group, or an entire people. The structure created by any of these architects conveys a message about the architect: their culture, their identity, their struggles. Because of the human element architects offer to their work not just a building is made, but a work of art, a symbol of a people, a representation, is also created.
