When it comes to playing sports, I would much rather miss a game due to an injury instead of an illness. It was my eighth grade year when I sprained my ankle during a basketball game. As I look back at the situation, the injury does not seem as big of a deal as I may portray. It was more of a shock; I never thought anything that painful would ever happen to me. With the injury, came several weeks of nursing it back to health. Since it was not an illness, such as the flu, my ankle could not heal overnight. To begin with, the game I got hurt in was during my fourth year of basketball. In fact, the entire situation was avoidable had I worn shoes intended for basketball. Instead, I used low-ankle support shoes meant for volleyball. I had managed to keep myself safe in previous games, so I continued to play the game without a second thought. I was guarding my opponent underneath the basket while the opposing team was taking the ball out on the sideline. As they started to pass the ball to my opponent, I quickly went to step around her, while also placing my foot on top of her foot. As I placed more weight onto my foot, my ankle soon gave out and rolled to the floor. While that happened, my foot managed to stay in place, leaving only my ankle to touch the ground. I learned to push through the pain and to continue on with my normal routine. Also, I learned from my coaches and parents how to take care of my injury and received experience on how to prevent them from occurring in the future. From the injury, I became fully aware of how much time is necessary for complete healing to take effect. Unfortunately like all the other sports I am apart of, basketball has its own fair share of injuries while participating during the sport. Unlike soccer, I have not experienced as many sport related injuries, but none the less, I have my fair share. Throughout all four years of high school, I still have to fight and take caution of my weak right ankle. It is because of my ankle that my basketball career has taken multiple catastrophes. For every time I land on my ankle in any that I see as a danger to my ankle, I immediately have to call myself off the court and miss valuable practice and game time. Plus, every time I step foot on any basketball court, i must have my ankle tapped and I must wear a brace. Not only must I worry about if my ankle will finally give out, I also have to worry about pulled muscles, strained back, bruised body parts, sore limbs, and even headaches from getting bashed in the head from an elbow every now and then. Finally the worst injury of all, being dropped dead tired and still having over an hour left in your practice. But after read The Glass Castle, I always think of a saying that Jeannette Walls’s father always told her, “ Things usually work out in the end. If they don’t, then you haven’t come to the end yet.” This saying has taught me that no matter how hard something seems to be, it all will eventually work out in the end and the good times
Sports Medicine is a medical field that specializes with physical fitness, treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. It was introduced around the early Greek and Roman era when the first modern Olympic Games took place. The Greek felt they could do something to help heal and prevent injuries that the athletes were receiving. Now in sports medicine, certain injuries can only be assessed and treated by specific physicians. These physicians can include physical therapists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. Although sports physicians are most commonly seen by athletes after they are hurt so they can be treated, there are some physicians that are seen before an injury occurs so that they can learn how to prevent injuries.
As with any sport, injuries occur quite frequently in the NBA. How these injuries are handled varies by team. Sometimes it is all about how serious it is and if it can get worse through playing through it. A lot of it is determined by how the player feels and how much the organization really wants and needs them on the court. Like if the team really needs a win or even just won’t accept the player to not play due to the crowd expecting them. Then if the player doesn't feel comfortable enough to play, like Andrew Bynum last year with his knee. I play volleyball as an outside hitter for Berea College. Therefore, the question I want this statistical research paper to answer pertains to volleyball. Specifically, I want to know if there is a relationship between the height of a volleyball player and the number of blocks she has in a set. A block constitutes the deflection of a ball into the opponent’s court, directly resulting in a point. I am interested in the answer to this question for a couple of reasons. It was simple, at first thought, my career was over. As I was rushed to the hospital, I thought I was never going to play football again. The pain was so unbearable, that every bump in the road would sent a shooting pain throughout my leg. I was for certain that I would never return the field again.
In college athletes, between 62% and 64% of the injuries reported in men’s and women’s basketball occur during practice (NCAA 1998). To prevent or reduce common injuries such as an ankle sprain there are different ways to go about it. One of theses way is wearing ankle braces or using tape to hold the ankle stable. Subjects wearing the ankle stabilizer had a lower percentage of multiple ligament or grade 2 ankle injuries (18%) (Mckeag, 2003). Another way to reduce the chances of injury is by wearing high top basketball shoes, wearing the high tops will keep the ankle steady and held firmly in the shoes providing an extra additional support.
It was the start of summer 2002, and the Mid America Youth Basketball (MAYB) national tournament was taking place in Andover, Kansas. Along with the rest of the team, I was excited to play some basketball for the first time since the middle school basketball season was over. Our team, Carlon Oil, had been together and played every summer for the last four years. We were a really good team, with an overall record of 65-4 over those four years and were hoping to continue our legacy. Lonnie Lollar, our coach for the summer, was also the coach of our high school basketball team. I had a history of groin injuries, and every summer it seemed that I would have to sit out at least a game on the bench icing my groin. But this summer was different, and I along with everyone in the gym wouldn't have expected my summer to end with a injury such as a broken leg.
The greatest achievement in my life would have to be my success in the sport of football. I started playing the game at the age of eight. It stuck with me throughout my life until now. During a football game there are numerous amounts of dynamic situations to be involved with. There are so many crucial actions that take place in the matter of seconds. In a certain instance in my life , the game had a strong impact on my life. It took place my senior year against our rivals, the best team in the district. That Monday we began preparing for the coming Friday. It was a typical week until I woke up Wednesday morning. I was routinely late for school running around the house. On my way out the door the phone brought me to an abrupt stop. Turning around, I started to sprint to the phone. A few steps into it, I crushed my little toe on the leg of my couch. Face down on the carpet, I proceeded to scream in pain. Answering the phone quickly got check off my things to do list. As soon as I could regain my sanity I hopped over to the couch and forgot about school. My toe suddenly turned black and swollen. It was the worst coincidence that could’ve happened to me. I went to the hospital later that day, where I heard that my foot was broken and I couldn’t play.
Everybody has a moment or two in their life that they will remember forever in perfect detail. For me the moments that I will remember for as long as I live are the times when, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and tore my anterior cruciate ligament, or better known as ACL.
