What is writing? How do we write? These are question we all have on our minds before we write something. In the essay, what is writing? Barthes describes writing as an instrument of language and how writing has affected humans throughout history. Writing has many different components to it. Style, expression, freedom, and language. In his essay, Barthes explains how writing affects everyone and the different ways it has its affects. The first thing Barthes mentions is style. He explains how style is a formulation of how writers write and how style is much of the body as feeling is. When he says this, he means if writing did not have style, writings would just be words on a page. But, style is important because it creates depth and body to an essay. For example, Barthes said “Style is almost beyond it: imagery, delivery, vocabulary spring from the body and the past of writer and gradually become the very reflexes of his art.” (Barthes, p.11) Basically he is saying that words are the canvas and style is colorful paint, with both it can create art. …show more content…
He says when people write what they are expressing in their selves in different ways. Writing is a form of expression, you write what you want, when you want , and how it is written and that is one of the key point in Barthes’ essay. For example, writing in a journal about how a person feels about a situation in their life or writing poetry about life and how it makes a person
In “Writing to Learn: Writing across the Disciplines,” Anne J. Herrington finds different sources stating that writing is to be taken serious. Janet Emig says, "writing represents a unique mode of learning-not merely valuable, not merely special, but unique” (1) meaning that writing is far more essential than we ought to make it seem. Anne Herrington wants educators teaching in economics, history, chemistry or any other subject to guide their students into understanding why progressing their writing skills will be more helpful to them. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the educator; whether he/she wants their students to use writing as a way for students to adapt to different disciplines.
Writing is a type of art because it requires you to think and be creative in the way you want it to be. I have a diary that I wrote almost everyday. They help me think about my day and sometimes turn my bad day into a good day. I write whatever comes into my head at that moment, and reflect on my day. Writing make me think deeper to what happen and help me turn my negative thought to positive. Writing is a very powerful tool. When I write, I have the power to change the story. I am the author of my own story so I can be as creative as I want.

8. Roger Rosenblatt in his last praragraph clearly explains what he means by saying, "I am writing blindly. Like everyone else." He explain that we don't really know why we bother to speak or share stories, besides the fact that we feel lonely. It also ties to how he thinks we write every sentence to find God but we never do. But if we never do find god, why bother wrtiting the next sentence or why bother saying the next story. So basically he is saying, humans don't know why they do anything besides the fact it gives comfort and pleasure. This applies to anything we do. Almost like we are forever seaching our own approval of our lives. Blindly.
It is fascinating to me to read the articles “Why I Write,” by George Orwell and Joan Didion. These authors touch on so many different topics for their reasons to writing. Their ideals are very much different, but their end results are the same, words on paper for people to read. Both authors made very descriptive points to how their minds wander on and off their writings while trying to write. They both often were writing about what they didn’t want to write about before they actually wrote what they wanted too. In George Orwell’s case, he wrote many things when he was young the he himself would laugh at today, or felt was unprofessional the but if he hadn’t done so he would not of been the writer he became. In Joan Didion’s case she would often be daydreaming about subjects that had nothing to do with what she intended on writing. Her style of writing in this article is actually more interesting because of this. Her mind wandering all over on many different subjects to how her writing came to her is very interesting for a person like me to read. My mind is also very restless on many different unneeded topics before I actually figure some sort of combined way to put words on to paper for people to read. I believe it to be his occupations, mostly his previous one of working with dead letters. Reading the last words of hundreds of people, which no doubt had an effect on his psyche, putting many things into perspective for him. Making life far less common a thought to him than life, shrinking his respect and value for life itself. No doubt filling him with the desire to find something in life, besides this depressing existence. It can be inferred that Bartleby left his job and found work as a Scrivener for the law firm, in search of true meaning. In the book, the Barthes creates some terms. Operator, Spectator and Spectrum are the first one. The Operator means the photographer, the viewer who looks at the Photograph becomes the Spectator and the thing emitted by subject is called eidolon(image, phantom, ghost), in other word the Spectrum. Barthes talks about Operator’s ability to take the picture of naturalness from the situation. He says that a Photograph is closer to the Spectator than the Operator and the Spectrum is the closest one. The stream of his thought naturally moves from the subject of the picture to viewers with excluding the person taking a picture. It was interesting for the artists like me because for artists, the subject matter goes first and then the work is created later. Particularly, for me, considering viewers mostly comes at the end or sometime, I even ignore the audience. For a viewer like Barthes, seeing the work is a completely opposite way to creating the work.
What is writing style? I started out thinking that writing style is a personal thing and that all writers have their own style. But, this way of thinking is really just a simple way to answer the question. After more careful thought, I realized that style is actually quite the opposite of personal and original. Style is a form of standardization. As writers, we all follow certain rules and guidelines to make our point. Style is these rules and guidelines.
Bart keeps a journal about his experiences during the “word flu” epidemic. In the beginning of his journal, he does not write about the “word flu”, but he keeps a journal to read and remember his thoughts and emotions associated with different events in his life. There are many different forms and styles used in writing. Writing is a form of communication that is used to document and express ideas people have. Through the years as people grow and learn knew ways of writing, writing awareness of a person will evolve into a much higher level of thinking. From the first term paper a person writes in high school to the papers they hand in at the college level, the writing will have matured over the years. The authors of writing develop new and more sophisticated ways in expressing themselves through the words they use in writing. Throughout history writers have found ways in which they can achieve the goals of gaining the readers attention and keep them interested. A good form of literature doesn't just write out on paper by itself, much preparation and ideas need to be worked out before it is finished. An author can improve his or her writing by giving thought to different ways of expressing their writing. One way of improving their writing is by using voice. Voice can offer writers different ways of explaining their thoughts.
Nicholas Sparks is considered to be one of the greatest American authors of today. He provides love, romance, passion, drama, tragedy, comedy, triumph, and mystery in all of his novels. His stories are heartwarming and inspiring. Nicholas Sparks does not have a specific writing style. His writing style is flexible and liberal, and can be described as romantic, imaginative and engaging, and varies depending on the theme of the novel. The theme of the novel is the main thing that affects his writing style. Even though the themes of each novel mostly deal with love, each novel takes on different perspectives of love. His novels can be described as romantic, compassionate beach reads with real, relatable characters.
Different writing styles present different tone and emotion. For example, a story about being in the war has more negative emotion than a story of a child being in her bedroom. Also, a story about a child makes the reader feel more relaxed and has an easier environment than a woman who is trying to be independent, which could encourage others to be independent themselves. Furthermore, when we analyze literature, we could find out that different authors have different writing styles. For instance, an adult could see a child’s visions, a war victim could talk positively while recalling her memories, and a person can be straightforward while chasing full independence. Also, when we read these stories, we can relate them to our own experiences.
In the following paragraphs I will be discussing the impact of Barthes’ ‘Death of the Author’ and its interpretive impact in contemporary art; discussing why and how we establish meaning within contemporary art. Is it upon our own back? Or through the eyes of the artist. Do we follow the artist’s line of thought? Or do we create an interpretation of our own? allowing our self’s to subtract the artist as a significant figure with in the art. Allowing it to create countless voices within art; is it though the loss of the author, do we see the work for its self. But also trying to establish is the author an importance and providing examples to reinforce these ideas.
