1. What does this statement mean to you: On page 51 Coates said, “the craft of poetry….what my mother taught me all those years ago – the craft of writing as the art of thinking.” What personal experiences have you had to illustrate this point?
Writing is a type of art because it requires you to think and be creative in the way you want it to be. I have a diary that I wrote almost everyday. They help me think about my day and sometimes turn my bad day into a good day. I write whatever comes into my head at that moment, and reflect on my day. Writing make me think deeper to what happen and help me turn my negative thought to positive. Writing is a very powerful tool. When I write, I have the power to change the story. I am the author of my own story so I can be as creative as I want.
2. What does Coates mean on page 60 when he says, “hate gives identity?”

It’s the way they see you and it’s the way they identify you as. They see you completly differently then you see yourself. You might do good deeds to people but they only see the bad deeds you did. They ignore the fact that you are a good person and focus on the fact that you are bad.
3. Do you agree that “love is an act of heroism?” (page 61) I agree that love is an act of heroism. We sometimes see people we don’t know on the street asking for money. We have no idea who they are and what their intentions are. We roll our windows down and hand them a few dollar because of the loving heart of us. He understand other people’s feeling and without knowing them, we rolled the windows down. It’s risking our own life to make someone else's day better. We believed that a few dollars that we give them will get them a good meal and they can go through a day without being hungry. So the loving side of us ignore the risk and helped.
4. Explain what Coates means when he says, “the god of history is an atheist.”
“I look to poetry, with its built-in capacity for compressed and multivalent language, as a place where many senses can be made of the world. If this is true, and I’ve built a life around the notion that it is, poetry can get us closer to reality in all its fluidity and complexity.”
It is a way to crucially engage oneself in setting the stage for new interventions and connections. Naomi Shihab Nye stated, “Anyone who feels poetry is an alien or an ominous force should consider the style in which human beings think. ‘How do you think?’ I ask my students. ‘Do you think in complete, elaborate sentences?... But some people pretend poetry is far away.” Nye is correct when she compares the way humans think of the way poetry is written. It is clear that Naomi Shihab Nye is correct in her statement through the study of poems such as Streets by Naomi Shihab Nye, Halley’s Comet by Stanley Kunitz, and Who Burns for the Perfection of Paper by Martín Espada.

It is rather difficult to speak of love in an original sense today. If someone were to ask an individual to define love, a common response would be, “love cannot be explained, it cannot be defined”. This answer would be acceptable if love was equally felt for and between all people. But anyone would have to agree to the fact that there are different degrees and levels of love. Someone would not love his or her family members the same way they would his or her spouse. Love varies between different levels of action and feeling, and a definition of each level must be discovered in order to understand its varying power. Martin Luther King Jr. felt the need to address this particular issue when discussing the principles behind the non-violent student movement for civil rights. King felt that a working idea of love was the keystone to the philosophy of a non-violent protest. Turning to the Greek language and idea of love, King was able to define three particular levels, eros, philia, and agape. His goal was to take one of these three levels and use it as the definitive quality of the non-violent movement.
The introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins, encourages the reader to let the mind free and interpret the revelation of life experience through a spectrum of meanings for the true meaning lies in the heart of the poem not so much on the surface. Billy Collins while encourages the discovery of beauty in a poem, however Collins takes a darker tone when disappointed in the fact that the reader’s interest in what the poem can reveal.
Marianne Moore’s infamous poem, “Poetry,” expresses her dislike of poems that are “so derivative as to become unintelligible” (Moore line 11). In other words, Moore dislikes poems with stereotypical subjects because these works become so abstract they cannot be understood. Moore’s poem also alludes to the misconception that people and writers believe that poems must be hard to understand in order to express thoughts, imagery, and experience. During the first class, he tells his class to rip out the page that introduces in the English textbook. Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
I write because it makes sense. The words flow and it's a way people can express, themselves or maybe entertain, or write books for the readers. In many ways, some people express themselves in a funny entertaining way such as poetry, which can show many emotions at once. Life would be boring without writing. Writing is necessary.
