Motivation can be expressed as something that drives people to pursue a mission. In Ernesto Galarza's fictional short story, “Barrio Boy”, Ernesto is a young boy who goes to Lincoln to become Americanized. In the excerpt of the nonfictional story, The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi and Tanim Ansary, Ahmedi goes through a long and dangerous adventure to escape Afghanistan with the hope of finding somewhere with peace and safety. Ernesto is motivated by the acceptance of others in order to be Americanized, while Ahmedi is motivated by finding peace and safety in her life by leaving Afghanistan.
Ernesto demonstrates his effort of trying to be accepted when he attempts to become Americanized with the help of Miss Hopley and her helpers.

Miss Hopley and her helpers always reminds them that Lincoln is “for those who [are] alien to become good Americans [and] for those who [are] so born, to accept the rest of [them]” (Galarza 16). This point highlights that the purpose of Ernesto going to Lincoln is to become Americanized and become like the others so that they could accept him for who he now is. By suggesting the purpose of Lincoln, the reader realizes that Ernesto is trying to be accepted which supports the idea that one of the many motivations into pursuing a mission is to be accepted by others.
Ernesto knows that Lincoln is not a place “where Miss Hopley and her helpers warms knowledge into [them]... and roasts racial hatred out of [them] (Galarza 16). In other words, Ernesto believes that Lincoln isn’t only a place …show more content…
where they educate, in order to make them into full Americans. Saying this allows the readers to comprehend that some people’s motivation to pursue a mission is to accepted, by being like the others so that people won’t mistreat them. One of the many motivations that makes people accomplish a goal is acceptance and this is revealed through the short story of “Barrio Boy” as Ernesto’s motivation is to become accepted by being Americanized; however another motivation is shown in the excerpt of the novel, “The Other Side of the Sky” as Ahmedi’s motivation of escaping Afghanistan is finding peace and safety. Ahmedi expresses her motivation of finding peace and safety in her life when she leaves the abandoned, dangerous Afghanistan to go to Pakistan.
Afghanistan is dangerous because “the guards ha[ve] clubs, and...carbines too, which they turn around and use as weapons” (Ahmedi & Ansary, 2). In other words, Afghanistan is not an ideal and safe place to live in, but instead is risky and this is shown with the use of many weapons which also helps readers understand better Ahmedi’s determination to escape. By suggesting that Afghanistan is dangerous, the reader realizes that some people’s motivation to pursue a mission is because they want to stay in a safe environment where it is worry-free. Afghanistan is abandoned; “there [is] nothing [there], no town, no buildings, just the desert” (Ahmedi & Ansary 1). What the text really means by this is that since there is nothing, there is no way to make money, and no shelter which means that there is no way to survive. Since the author expresses to the readers what life is like in Afghanistan, the reader realizes that some people, like Ahmedi’s, motivation into pursuing a mission is having peace and safety in their lives. Throughout the story, it is shown that Ahmedi’s motivation to escape the dangerous Afghanistan is peace and
safety. There are various types of motivations that drive people to pursue their mission and some examples are shown through Ernesto and Ahmedi’s motivation of acceptance and safety. Through his experience in Lincoln, Ernesto is overcoming the process of being Americanized with the help of Miss Hopley as he slowly begins to realize the true purpose of Lincoln. Meanwhile, Ahmedi desires to cross the border where she thinks that she could surely live a better, and safer life. Many things drive people to undergo a mission, however it is different for every person and situation; the process toward achieving a mission is long and difficult, which is the reason why motivations are important because it keeps people determined and constantly running toward the mission without stopping or giving up.
The Mexican White boy is a good book. It is by the author named Matt de la Pena. Although it wasn’t my type of book I would recommend it to someone. The Mexican White Boy is about a boy who moves with his father side of his family and tries to fit in with the Mexicans although he doesn’t know how to speak Spanish. The story is really relaxing. The plot is great, the theme, the tone, and mood of the story. . The plot of the story is always changing. It changes from enemies to friends. I feel like the author want to change your mind about people. For example, first Danny, the main character, must fit in with everyone. Then he meets a kid named Uno and the first time they meet they get into a fight. But later, in the story Uno and Danny start being friends.
Early in the 20th century, there was a large increase of immigration not only in California, but the whole United states, and according to Dr. Joshua Paddison of Wittenberg University, “One-half million Mexicans migrated, with more than 30 percent setting in California” (Paddison, 1921-present: Modern California). Some of the immigrants’ transition from Mexico and into California be seen in both Ernesto Galarza’s “Barrio Boy”, and Richard Rodriguez’s “Proofs”. While both differentiate by their time period, there are some similar behavior patterns, such as the immigrants crossing over the border and into different states, their work, and their social life.
Ernesto had many difficulties along the way to be where he is today. Ernesto is a young, mexican boy who is an immigrant coming to America for a better a better life. Ernesto has many trials along the way like learning English, adjusting to American culture, and becoming a better American without forgetting where they came from, “At Lincoln, making us into Americans did not mean scrubbing away what made us originally
In paragraph one, it states “It was a new building, painted yellow, with a shingled roof that was not like the red tile of the school in Mazatlán. I noticed other differences, none of them very reassuring. “ This shows that since Mazatlán is in Mexico, Ernesto is an immigrant who needs more education to further extend his knowledge and understanding of American culture. He had to learn English and learn to become a good American citizen. The main goal for Ernesto was to become a good American. As it says in paragraph 16 “Miss Hopley and her teachers never let us forget why we were at Lincoln: for those who were alien, to become good Americans; for those who were so born, to accept the rest of us.” This shows that the overall mission goal was to become good Americans and for others to discard their racial hatred. So although his school was no longer Mazatlán Ernesto learned to accept it and learned English along the way. He went to a new country, new waters, and found a new life and a new
Have you ever thought of the struggles other people have? Here are a few of these selections Ernesto Galarza from Barrio Boy, Farah Ahmedi in The Other Side of the Sky, and Gandalf from The Hobbit all are stories about people who undertook a mission. These are their similarities and their goals.
Afghanistan since its beginning has been a place of conflict, despair, and at times lost hope. It has been taken advantage of and lost its sense of identity, which has had a direct effect on its people, and there own sense of what justice truly is.

...d to exhibit the harsh treatments many citizens living there do in recent years. Moreover, Hosseini and Amir explain the importance of having a father figure who would be support their son’s interests in life and helping them thrive for success in the careers they would like to pursue. Neither Hosseini or Amir had a father who supported their long term goals. Hosseini’s and Amir’s high social class in their hometown Kabul, made life easier for them as they were growing up because they were able to afford education which helped them a lot in the careers they pursued in. When both Hosseini and Amir came to the United States, they had a tough time learning the lifestyles of an American, but for the most part, it brought them to how successful they became. Ultimately, Khaled Hosseini creates a protagonist in his novel who serves as a parallel to his own life experiences.
He is able to capture the realness of the time and setting through his words, and write for a purpose. As a result, it can be said that he uses this work of historical fiction less as a theatrical stage and more as a platform to introduce the audience to the inhumaneness of Afghanistan. He not only incorporates the Taliban’s grueling “beard lookout men,” who patrol the roads in their fancy Toyota trucks in hopes of finding “a smooth-shaven face to bloody,” but he also displays the horrific and bloodcurdling abuse of women that exists at the hands’ of men and the feelings of great despair and pain that these women face as a result. Living in a state of unbearable fear of the next beating, the next detonating bomb, and the next brutal attempt of the Taliban, the lives of these characters feel almost too real to not be true. Resultantly, the reader is left to wonder whether or not this added literary dimension of realness is actually an introspective study of individuals that Hosseini has long
Afghanistan; Taliban controlled, discrimination and love everywhere yet nowhere at the same time. It’s a nation where culture and tradition are of immense importance, especially to the older generation. Over 53% of Afghan population is below the poverty line, making the country one of the Earth’s poorest. Life would be lived on a day to day basis, not knowing if it’s safe to be outside, when...
Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way according to Google. The three milers in The Perfect Mile attempt to achieve the four-minute mile, and they each have different forms of motivation. There are two milers that achieve success because their motive impelled them to prevail. What is motivation?
Afghanistan is like a time capsule. Many people farm for subsistence, and few are able to read or write. Afghans have been compared to Spartans in that they are a martial people who have been at war for thousands of years. The rough terrain in which they live lends itself to long periods of resistance. Time and time again they have been able to push away would be conquerors. The current war in Afghanistan stands in contrast to previous wars because its purpose is not one of conquest for land or for the exploitation of resources. The purpose of the current war in Afghanistan is to win over the Afghan people and to help them grow ideologically to assimilate into an ever more technologically advanced global environment.
According to Greenberg (1999), motivation is defined “as a process of arousing, directing and maintaining behavior towards a goal.” Where “directing” refers to the selection of a particular behavior; and ‘maintenance” refers to the inclination to behave with consistency in that manner until the desired outcome is met.
The word motivation is made from the Latin word ‘movere’ which means to move something. Baron 1983 says that “motivation is a set of process concerned with a kind of force that energizes behavior and directs it towards achieving some specific goals” Baron, 1983, According to Kreitner and Kinicki 2001, p.162 motivation represents “those psychological processes that cause the stimulation, persistence of voluntary actions that are goal directed”. To be motivated means to be moved to do something (Cadwallader, Bitner, & Ostrom, 2010, Pg. 222). Most theories have treated motivation as a singular term that varies in the amount such that people with more motivation will aspire to greater achievement and be more. This is simply wrong. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) claims that there are different kinds of motivation. “To be self-determining means to experience a sense of choice in initiating and regulating one’s own actions” (Cadwallader, Bitner, & Ostrom, 2010, Pg. 228). SDT claims these different types of motivations are centered around peoples values and principles. These different motivations can be sparked by an external push such as an employer threatening someone to lose their job; known as amotivation. People with amotivation tend to not have motivation or determination, therefore needing that extra push. There is also the employee thriving to get a raise and ignites internal motivation to do extra work, called intrinsic motivation. (Cadwallader, Bitner, & Ostrom, 2010, Pg. 230) Although it is important to recognize there are different forms of moti...
