Forces, Barriers, and Hindrances Change involves various forces, barriers and hindrances. These factors can affect the implementation process and thus there is need to identify them and eliminate them if possible. The first barrier is resistance to change. People may be willing to receive less pay but be assured of stability of the organization. Lack of proper understanding of the culture, processes and systems of the current organization can affect the process of implementing change. This is because the management and the employees may develop anxiety regarding the complexity of the new systems. Proper training and enough provision of information can help deal with this issue. Intergradation problems is the third barrier. This basically entails being a position of making things work together. Change can affect various levels of the organization and thus affect the whole company. The processes from design, manufacture to service delivery should therefore be analyzed to ensure that they will be in line with the new vision. Failure at one level will affect the whole process (Small, et al 2016). Competitive forces are external factors that limit implementation of change. Since its first grand opening in 1971, Southwest Airlines has shown steady growth, and now carries more passengers than any other low-cost carrier in the world (Wharton, 2010). To expand the business operations, Southwest Airlines took over AirTran in 2010 as a strategy to gain more market share for the Southeast region and international flights. However, the acquisition of AirTran brought upcoming challenges both internally and externally for Southwest Airlines. In this case analysis, the objectives are to focus on the change process post the merger with AirTran, and to evaluate alternatives to address the impacts of the merger. II.
Change affects more than just a program or a process within an organization, change affects employees, collecting data on employee’s readiness and willingness to accept a change will help leaders know if the organization is socially ready for change (Cole, Harris, and Bernerth, 2006). A change might be positive for an organization but if the employees who will be affect by the change are lost in the process then it could create a greater issue than not making the change. Leadership needs to communicate and inspire the employees to be positive toward the change, seeking to enhance their job satisfaction not make changes that will increase their desire to leave. This data is best collected early in the change initiative allowing leadership to properly cast the vision while addressing concerns. This requires leadership to create platforms for employees to engage in the change initiative freely (Ford, 2006). Employee attitudes can be measured through these dialogues providing leadership with necessary measureable data (Hughes, 2007).
Leading Change was named the top management book of the year by Management General. There are three major sections in this book. The first section is ¡§the change of problem and its solution¡¨ ; which discusses why firms fail. The second one is ¡§the eight-stage process¡¨ that deals with methods of performing changes. When advocating for the success of a client when utilizing this theory, a counselor must be prepared to identify and eliminate barriers, prejudices, oppression, and discrimination that may create a psychological obstruction in the client. Learning culturally-competent counseling practices and current theoretical approaches while practicing self-reflection will help the counselor acquire the skills necessary to engage with a diverse clientele.
