Bariatric patient lifts use mechanical power (electric, hydraulic, or battery power) to assist very heavy patients who have limited mobility to transfer safely from seated or supine positions to other surfaces. Lifts are used in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and at home to help caregivers provide dignified care that is safe for both the patient and the provider.
Rehabmart carries a large assortment of superior quality bariatric patient lifts from noted vendors including Invacare, Drive Medical, Romedic, Hoyer, Traxx and others.

What types of facilities utilize bariatric patient lifts? Are they suitable for home use?
They are used in hospitals and long-term care facilities such as nursing homes and hospices, for the safety and comfort of the heavier residents and the safety of care workers. Some models are also appropriate for use in private residences.
Are different types of lifts used for different purposes?
There are two basic types of mechanized patient lifts: sling lifts or sit-to-stand lifts.
Sling lifts are assistive devices that allow patients with limited mobility (or those receiving home health care) to be transferred between a chair and a bed or other resting place, using hydraulic power. They could be overhead lifts suspended from ceiling-mounted or overhead tracks, mobile floor lifts, or freestanding frame power lifts.
Sling lifts are used for vertical patient transfer. Slings are usually sold separately, and range from “full body” slings to special toileting slings. The amount of back support, head support and padding required, and the medically appropriate position during transfer will help determine which slings are appropriate for your
A stool with positive ergonomic characteristics should support “thighs, arms, legs, and back, as well as proper posture, circulation, and respiration” . The stool should also be equipped with at least five free-rolling casters and be supportive of posture during various movements made by the hygienist. If the stool that is provided to a hygienist by their employer does not have these qualities, the hygienist could consider purchasing their own stool. It is also recommended that hygienists rotate between different stools throughout the day to avoid maintaining the same posture during an entire work shift

Obesity remains an extremely serious issue worldwide. Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight and obesity that will help everyone (CDC, 2009).
Orlistat is a lipase-inhibitor drug designed to help obese individuals lose and maintain their body weight. The drug in combination with a healthy low-fat diet and exercise can help in the treatment of obesity. Reducing fat intake is critical when attempting to reduce body fat. Orlistat reduces body fat by increasing the amount of fat passed through the body. The drug has already been approved in Europe and is expected to be approved by the FDA in the US in 1999.There have been scientific studies which support the effectiveness and low risks of Orlistat. Diet and exercise should be stressed in all attempts at weight loss, yet it seems Orlistat may be a helpful addition to the weight loss program for obese patients.
More than 40,000 people a year are so desperate to lose weight they turn to the controversial, sometimes life-threatening surgery such as Gastric Bypass. I will be explaining what the surgery entitles, disadvantages vs. advantages. And most important, is Gastric bypass surgery the right choice when considering the risks. The most common form of “stomach stapling” is gastric bypass. In this procedure, a small pouch is formed in the stomach and stapled shut. The small intestine is then cut and stapled onto the pouch, shrinking the stomach’s ability to take in food. The technique involves removing a section of the stomach and rearranging the small bowel to divert bile and pancreatic secretions away from the food stream. Fats and starches flow through without being absorbed. In order to be a candidate for the surgery, patients must be considered morbidly obese or at least 100 pounds overweight. Before an individual gets the go-ahead, he or she meets with doctors and psychologists to rule out all other ways of help. Surgery may sound like the best option for a morbidly overweight person, but a small figure comes at a high price. There are health risks and the side effects can be fatal. Three people will die during every 1,000 procedures, according to the ASBS. Let me tell you about more disadvantages. More than one-third of obese patients who have gastric surgery develop gallstones. Nearly one in three develop nutritional deficiencies. Patients could also be at risk for anemia, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

...erstanding the diversity of individuals. With considering obesity as a disability, it may be inappropriate in circumstances where some are still able to function at an acceptable level but it may be appropriate in cases where they are unable to cope. This is establishing the transition point where obesity does in fact cause significant disability. The aim of the healthcare team should be to prevent the development of these impairments caused by the obesity by trying to avoid further deterioration in the patient’s health. This will mean trying to ensure that individuals prone to excessive weight gain are educated and supported in ordered to avoid them becoming obese. This can be done through motivational interviewing and appropriate education along with the right resources available and will result is some individuals not progressing to the stage of becoming disable.
In this case, healthier options for food tend to be more One health concern in this video series is shown with Darryl Phillipson. He is a judge, and he mentions in part 2 of the series that it is even difficult for him to walk up the stairs to get to the podium. He is said to be suffering from knee pain, high blood pressure, and he is on medication to control his obesity. Because Phillipson is at a higher risk for cardiac failure, or any other major heart disease, he is using the option of Bariatric surgery to lose weight and improve his weight-related health conditions.
Introduction of the The ‘Burpee’ The burpee is an exercise many love to hate, its lactic acid heavy nature often leaves people shattered and gasping for breath. Many see the burpee as the ultimate full body exercise. As a rugby union player, exercises such as the burpee help keep my body in ideal shape and allow me to improve my performance. Strength, body composition and conditioning all play major roles in the efficiency and level of my performance on the field and the burpee enhances all of these components of my fitness.
Dr. Augustine also realized that the market for this new product is enormous! Statistics indicate that approximately 21 million surgical operations are performed annually in the United States, and that approximately 5,500 hospitals have operating rooms and postoperative recovery rooms that include 31,365 postoperative recovery beds and 28,514 operating rooms. Upon the realization of this need and existence of the market, Dr. Augustine went on to develop The Bair Hugger Patient Warming System. He then acquired a patent. The Bair Hugger Patient Warming System consists of a heat source and a separate disposable warming cover that directs a gentle flow of warm air across the body.
Weightlifting and powerlifting may sound the same, but they are not as similar as many people think. Apart from weightlifting being an Olympic sport and powerlifting not, there are many differences. Weightlifting and powerlifting have different movements, amounts of flexibility, and ways to hold the bar.
Medicare policy for walk in tubs The statistics reveal that most of the fractures and injuries to elder people are caused as a result of slipping in the bathroom which follows critical hospitalization in many cases. In order to eliminate the cause of slipping the bathroom again, sometimes doctors or the care takers take the decision to install walk in tubs for them. As the cost involved is quite high, many just drop the idea of purchasing it and even those who has a compulsion to buy, tries to get its cost covered via a Medicare claim.
Obesity is a serious condition that has generated a discussion on whether or not to be classified as a disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity is the body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, which is calculated based on the person’s height and weight. For years, our society has been facing the obesity challenge, which can be extremely costly once it leads to several diseases. Thus, because of the constant increase of percentage of people with obesity, the American Medical Association (AMA) proposed in June 18, 2013 to classify obesity as a disease. Their argument was that obesity increases the risks of countless health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension etc. Moreover, it increases morbidity and mortality. By considering obesity as a disease, their aim was to maximize researches and funding, which will focus on obesity from different medical and health approach levels. Their idea of classifying obesity as a disease was in accordance with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s declaration of 1995. The institute declared, “ Obesity is a complex multifactorial chronic disease developing from multiple interactive influences of numerous factors.” In 2012, the CDC data showed 34.9% of adults obese and 17% of obese children. These numbers are very alarming especially since the struggle to deter certain factors contributing into this condition is still a challenge. Among the struggles, there are the people’s rights versus health regulations to keep them as healthy as possible like the former mayor Bloomberg regulation on soft drinks size cut. During CNN’s show GPS of Sunday 2, 2014, the host Zacharia...
The Scope of Nursing Practice describes the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice. Each of these questions must be answered to provide a complete picture of the dynamic and complex practice of nursing and its evolving boundaries and membership. (ANA )The role of the nurse with the obese population is very important. Obesity is considered a chronic disease in many community health texts. Community health nursing grew greatly, during the later part of the 20th century, due in large part to a growing population of chronically ill people (who were now surviving illnesses that were previously less treatable). This situation with the chronically ill continues to grow, shifting more and more responsibility for health
