A strong leader is someone who helps guide other to success through positive relationships, encouragement, responsibility, and dedication to completing goals. These are all qualities that I believe I show daily in the band program. Having positive and strong relationships with different section and band members can go a long way in leadership. I have made great connections with my squad and section members especially this year, in an attempt to not only gain respect, but also so that I can understand how they learn and behave so that I can best help them. They had not had a sectional experience yet when I helped them, and many members were struggling with marching basics and music memorization, so I stayed after school and came in before school to help them learn how to do these things and improve upon what they previously knew. They improved a lot in a short amount of time due to their willingness to learn and excitement for marching band, which I was happy dedicate my time to helping them. In Jazz, I have helped my section members execute their music more cleanly, as well as emphasizing the importance of articulation and style when we did this. Some spots took a long time to get up to tempo, but we worked on them until we accomplished it, no matter how long it took(Legitimate Itch). I once went and asked for advice on how to help my section learn things quicker, and I was told to just keep doing all the things I was doing. After a while, my section would catch on and get things down better. By the end of the year, we were all learning things quicker and working harder as a group. I want to make sure I spend as much of my senior year as possible helping the people around me, as well as myself. I want to continue improving my leadership in Jazz by welcoming our new member and making sure we make even more progress next year. I think we are right at the point where with a little more push we can do great things. I really want to encourage other members in my section to solo because I know it is very hard to start and be comfortable doing. It is a journey I have started and am going to continue focusing on this summer, and I want them to also be a part of that so that we can all be the best possible. In Wind Ensemble, I want to change the way our focus in sectionals has become like recently, and try to build up confidence for all players. A lot of the music we play is difficult and lots of the trumpet players shy away from those sections, so I want us as a group to try to lean into those parts harder and just play them at a full volume until we get comfortable with it. In regard to our sectionals, the past month I have noticed how people have been taking sectionals less and less seriously, for many reasons, and I want that to change. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
The low reed section to me is not just my section, it is my family, and I would love to have the honor of calling myself mom. However, Lauren will always be the original mom and my biggest role model in band. She was the first one to give me hug whenever I was upset, she made sure I didn't get sunburned during band camp, and was overall the most loving, caring section leader I most likely will ever have. As section leader, I would like to devote all my time, love, and leadership to my section and show what an amazing marching experience truly is. They need to start acting like leaders instead of normal kids in marching band, especially for the younger players because essential leaders are role models. If leaders are goofing off while they should be serious the rest of the band thinks it could goof off too. If a leader does nothing but complain, people are going to follow in his or her footsteps. Leaders also need to help freshmen with their parts because a lot of them do not have confidence in what they are playing. Section leaders should basically be a teacher during sectionals. I'd like to make sure that freshman weren't scared about Drumline. To help them know they had someone who could help them with music. I would try my best to build the Drumline up as a whole and to make sure that I was only saying positive things to build others up. I would love to try to avoid that because the Drumline to me is a family. We all may fight but deep down we all love each other, care for each other and don't want to see anyone brought down. I would try to do create activities during band camp to make it much more fun. I also think a leader should have the basic knowledge of all the instruments in the Drumline and Pit so that he or she would be able to help anyone that's struggling with whatever it may be. Also, a leader should be very devoted to whatever he or she is a part of. He or she should really practice a lot for Drumline and make it a habit of focusing mostly on Drumline. Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. Two weeks before school even started, the Hotchkiss High School Marching Band began its march to the state-qualifying competition in Delta. We worked four hours a day for five days, getting our fundamentals going and getting a feel for our new show. Once school did start, we started practice at 7:00 a.m. and went for two hours every day, working on music and marching. Our band was once again small (eighteen people!), but our sound was great. It was actually easier trying to teach a smaller group because of the difficulty of the moves we were attempting. Of course, I didn't help matters much by my trials of congeniality with the podium. I figured if I didn't fly off with flapping of my arms, then surely I would walk right off the stand.
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.

Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic.
