The book Balzac and The Little Seamstress by Dai Sijie is a story about two boys, the narrator and his friend Luo, who are forced to move to a village for re-education. Many students are taken out of school to be re-educated by rural peasants and do labor work. Luo and the narrator are sent because their parents are medical professionals and the villagers think they are too smart. They don’t want people to have a chance to be smarter than them. In the passage that is being examined, the headman of the village, Mao Zedong, directs Luo to fix his tooth that is hurting and he threatens to take the narrator to Public Security Office if he doesn't do it. they are put to work in a coal mine. When the villagers realize that they have a special talent for storytelling, they are sent to watch movies and retell the stories to the villagers. The headman overhears one of the stories and believes the narrator is spreading reactionary filth and so he blackmails Luo into fixing his tooth. It is easy for the headman to find a way to get Luo to fix his tooth now because he has a the upper hand in the situation. The scene to the novel is very disturbing, revealing the nasty hygiene of the headman and the narrator's angry feelings and revengeful actions towards him. The way the headman is portrayed shows his unclean ways and creates a disturbing image to the reader.
The passage is filled with hideous descriptions of the headman’s mouth. The passage starts describing the headman's mouth as a “jagged mountain ridge” with “tobacco-stained canines.” This highlights the fact that the headman doesn't really care about his appearance or what people think about him. He just wants to care for how he feels and he doesn't care if it looks bad. He seems to not care how he acts towards others and just cares about how he feels about himself. While Luo was fixing his tooth, the headman fumed that Luo nearly “killed him.” This explains that he is making his tooth into a bigger deal than it is and he wants them to think that he is better than them. He wants it to seem like it's Luo’s fault that his tooth is hurting by saying he “nearly died.” When Luo and the tailor say that the headman's body refuses to cooperate and they need to strap him down, the headman thinks he is a big shot and tells them that he is basically in charge and has the “commune leader’s mandate.” This is saying that even though his body isn't cooperating, he still finds a way to tell them that he is in charge even though they are helping
him. The narrator becomes revengeful and wants to humiliate the headman. He wants him to know that he isn't invincible and is just as equal. When Luo and the tailor finally strap the headman down, the narrator has to take over the tailor's job. He had to put his foot on the treadle and pedal the machine with the needle that is going to drill the headman’s tooth attached to it. He was “filled with trepidation” when he first started the job. This is because he didn't want the headman to become more angry at him. He was nervous that it wouldn't work as he wanted. The headman was strapped down however, and so he couldn't say anything to the narrator. The narrator took advantage of that and he pedaled slower because he wanted to punish the headman for “threatening custody” upon him. He covered his hatred with a “innocent, calm deliberation.” This was because he now had the advantage and he didn't want the headman to know that he was doing this on purpose.

Out of the Dust is a 1934 historical fiction novel written by Karen Hesse. The setting of the novel is in a struggling farm in Joyce City in Oklahoma. The novel talks of the challenges faced by Billie Jo a 13 year old girl and her family. It tells of Billie’s struggles a she grows up in Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the depression. Billie’s father was a farmer but his crops fail to nourish because of the drought but Billie is determined to make a better life for herself. Billie was a pianist and got a chance to travel around town with other aspiring performers but her mother never gave her the support she desperately needed. She decided to escape but her escape was halted by a horrific accident which let to her mother and her baby brother being bed ridden and later died. The accident left Billie Jo with severe burns on her hands until she could not play the piano the way she use to. However much she tried doing, she felt a lot of pain. She ran a way from home after she thinks that her father does not support her, later on she comes back home and mends her relationship with her father. She meets Louise who her father had met and she starts rebuilding her life. The family in Out of the Dust faces dust storms and an economic disaster resulting from the drought.

When the author was describing the petrifying appearance of the creature, she made sure to use words that would make us sick to our stomachs in order to get a really good idea across about how simply disgusting this now-animate creature was. She does this by explaining to us how the creature’s “yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath”. The thought of seeing something so sickening even makes us make a wry face and try to get the image out of our heads – and that’s exactly the reaction the author is hoping to see from us. Michael Ondaatje is very much like the narrator of his novel. Both share similar aspects of their lives beginning with the fact they share the same name: Michael. It is perhaps because Ondaatje himself experienced the same voyage as eleven year old Michael that the novel seems so very realistic. Both are born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and each, at age eleven take the voyage of a lifetime by boat from Sri Lanka to England. It seems appropriate that as the narrator of the book recalls his past as a journalist deep in adulthood, the same may be said of the novels true real author. Only Ondaatje himself knows how connected the two journeys are and this blend of truth and fiction are married perfectly to create a dreamlike quality to young Michael’s story.
The effect the reader perceives in the passage of Rattler is attained from the usage of the author¡¯s imagery. The author describes the pre-action of the battle between the man and the snake as a ¡°furious signal, quite sportingly warning [the man] that [he] had made an unprovoked attack, attempted to take [the snake¡¯s] life... ¡± The warning signal is portrayed in order to reveal the significance of both the man¡¯s and the snake¡¯s value of life. The author sets an image of how one of their lives must end in order to keep the world in peace. In addition, the author describes how ¡°there was blood in [snake¡¯s] mouth and poison dripping from his fangs; it was all a nasty sight, pitiful now that it was done.¡± This bloody image of snake¡¯s impending death shows the significance of the man¡¯s acceptance toward the snake. In a sense, the reader can interpret the man¡¯s sympathy toward the snake because of the possibility that he should have let him go instead of killing him.
His related action towards his grandfather’s words, “Live with your head in the lion 's mouth. I want you to overcome 'em with yeses, undermine 'em with grins, agree 'em to death and destruction, let 'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open" as a action of distrust since he believes that the best way to winning the fight was to provide them with genuine commitment. The narrator chooses to surrender himself to the Whites and devoting himself to gaining the respect and trust of the Whites. It is to my believe that the narrator is projecting himself as civilized and hospitable in order to change the views of himself to one that is less barbaric in the eyes of the Whites. In the last half of the nineteenth century, Victorian ideals still held sway in American society, at least among members of the middle and upper classes. Thus the cult of True Womanhood was still promoted which preached four cardinal virtues for women: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. Women were considered far more religious than men and, therefore, they had to be pure in heart, mind, and, of course, body, not engaging in sex until marriage, and even then not finding any pleasure in it. They were also supposed to be passive responders to men's decisions, actions, and needs. The true woman's place was her home; "females were uniquely suited to raise children, care for the needs of their menfolk, and devote their lives to creating a nurturing home environment." (Norton, 108). However, the tensions between old and new, traditional and untraditional, were great during the last years of nineteenth century and there was a debate among male and female writers and social thinkers as to what the role of women should be. Among the female writers who devoted their work to defying their views about the woman's place in society were Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin.
