Applying The Baloney Detection Kit The claim is: The Flex Belt® Tones Firms and Strengthens the stomach muscles. Source of Claim is: Signals from the ab belt stimulate the nerves of the abdomen. These signal causes the nerves to relax and contract naturally, working all the muscles at the same time. Question 1: Site the claim and explain where you located the claim. The Flex Belt is found at the website http://www.theflexbelt.com/index.php. I came across this product while watching an advertisement on YouTube. Question 1a-1c: Answers to three baloney detection questions. Each of the answers will be evaluated according to these points then the points totaled for this section. 1- How reliable is the source of the claim? The source
that tested this product appears to be reliable. The principal investigator responsible for the clinical trials that tested the effectiveness of the flex belt was Dr. John Porcari, Ph.D. The Flex belt website explains that the clinical study lasted 6-weeks and it showed that 100% of participants felt that their abs felt more toned and firm and 92.3% of participants felt the firmness of their abdominal muscles increased (1). John Porcari Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He is also a Fellow American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and served as President of AACVPR from 2002 to 2003 (2). 2- Has the claim been verified by somebody else? No other research has been performed to verify that the Flex Belt tones, firms, and strengthens the stomach muscles. Many of the verification is made in a testimonial form by supposed users of the product. Even though there is no way to determine if these testimonies are true, there are videos on YouTube made by users of the Flex Belt. In these videos, the users utilize the Flex Belt and report the experience. Most of the users report an increase in an increase of strengthens and tones on the stomach muscles. 3- Does this really fit with the way the world works? The Flex Belt which is an electrical muscle stimulator (EMS) works by delivering electrical pulses that activate nerves in the body. This signal causes the muscles to contract and then relax. This mechanism is naturally utilized by the brain to send signals to the muscles. Since the body naturally uses electrical messages to tell muscles to work and this result in toning, firming and strengthening the muscles, I conclude that the Flex belt fits with the way the world works to the extent of stimulating the muscle. Question 2: Specifically address how the claim can be falsified. The claim of this product is that its use tones, firms, and strengthens the stomach muscles. Pictures and videos are showed to demonstrate the “stunning” results of the use of this product. In the advertainment is shown how the use of the flex belt results in individuals with a notable girth reduction and visible abdominal muscles. This visual demonstration is what serves as the key marketing hook and where is found the misleading claim of results. The flex belt claim that its use tones, firms, and strengthens the stomach muscles while visually showing transformations that can only be achieved by weight loss and muscle building. The federal department of agriculture stated that electronic muscle stimulators device might give the users a temporarily strengthen, tone or firm a muscle. However, no electronic muscle stimulators devices have been cleared for weight loss, girth reduction, or for obtaining "rock hard" abs (3). Moreover, a research title “Effect of Neuromuscular Electrical Muscle Stimulation on Energy Expenditure in Healthy Adults” by Miao-Ju Hsu indicated that although electrical muscle stimulation can increase energy expenditure weight loss is not achieved without reduction of caloric intake (4).
