Avant Garde: Anti-Traditional In Form

Avant Garde in its simplest is a term which can be used to describe something that is different and new, making it anti-traditional in form. Avant Garde is a phrase which was first recognised at the end of the 19th century within the arts, being widely used across several different types of art forms such as music, dance and theatre. However in its true form, it stood as a military term “advanced Garde”. When this term was then applied to the arts however it was used to describe the usage of new innovative and experimental forms of art which broke the conformities of artistic boundaries. However an emotional response is dependent on the individual watching and observing the piece of theatre. The play Alistair Spalding is referencing is Canadian choreographer Dave St-Pierre's show, Un Peu de Tendresse Bordel de Merde! To one critic, it was moving and tender, "truly remarkable and not to be missed"; to another, "a heap of ordure so ripe you could fertilise your petunias with it". This again highlights that Avant garde is dependent on opinion and will be effected by personal experience and exposure to similar material. The writer of the play commented saying “I'm surprised people are as interested in the nudity as I'm certainly not the first choreographer to use it on stage. Choreographers have been doing this for more than 40 years. I don't know why it's still so shocking.” This statement being true means that the audience’s response could be dependent on whether or not they had experienced this form of theatre previously and whether they engaged with it positively or negatively. This question of whether Avant Garde is still relevant then means it is down to whether the individual spectator sees the piece to be pushing the boundaries of what they have seen prior and breaks what they have been conditioned
