1. Introduction

The Australian stock market has over 150 years of exchange experience, with regional markets dating back to the mid 1800s. This prior market experience created a platform for a national stock exchange to build upon, and with this, the Australian Securities Exchange or ASX was formed on 1 April 1987. The ASX provides a clear and regulated environment where companies and investors of all sizes can come together.

Nowadays the ASX is one of the leading financial markets. It consistently ranks in the top 20 exchanges globally and as of April 1 1987, the ASX is ranked 15th with Almost 2,200 companies and issuers are listed on the ASX. Background Information on WPL

Woodside Petroleum Limited or WPL is a global leader in upstream oil and gas. Woodside is the largest operator of oil and gas in Australia. It was incorporated on 26 July 1954 however was originally named Woodside (Lakes Entrance) Oil Co NL, taking its name from the small town of Woodside in Victoria. Woodside's humble beginnings didn't last long as the company was soon a multi-billion dollar business with mines located all over Australia. Woodside's three main competitors: Apache Corporation, BHP Billiton Limited and Santos limited, do not do not reach the size and economic value of Woodside Petroleum Limited.




4. Analysis of WPL's Financial Performance

Woodside has consistently been earned high profits over a number of years, this is shown in Figure 4.1. The consistency creates high investor confidence and ultimately brings in more investments. Woodside is expected to rise significantly in the near future due to a recent bid which boosted market confidence. Woodside is currently listed on the ASX 200 and has been a part of the ASX 200 for many years now. The dividends for Woodside are currently paying at 92.067c.
