THEMES
One of the main themes of this novel is the fight against cancer. All three of the main characters struggle with cancer. Hazel struggles with her terminal lung cancer, and Isaac has to have his eyes removed because of cancer. Augustus, who has already lost a leg to Osteoscarcoma, struggles with his cancer returning. However, they all learn through this that their cancer does not control them. They still live their lives to the fullest that they can, and make the best of what they have.
Another theme that is reiterated throughout the story is that love triumphs all. Hazel and Augustus both have their struggles, but they face them together and support each other. They are beside each other every step of the way. Augustus teaches Hazel

that she is much more than her cancer story, and Hazel brings light and meaning back to Augustus’s life. Each is the other’s better half. Theirs is an epic love story. One more of the themes is loss.
At the end of the book when Augustus dies, Hazel has to realize that life must go on. She feels like she was robbed of her one true love. Even though what she feels is incredibly painful, she is there to support Augustus’s family. She realizes that she is not the only one hurting, even though she lost the love of her life.
PETER VAN HOUTEN
He is the author of An Imperial Affliction, Hazel and Augustus's favorite book. When they visit him in Amsterdam, however, they learn that he is not everything that they expected. He is a brash and loquacious alcoholic. He avoids showing any emotion, displaying pride, sarcasm, and cruelty instead. He is like this because of the loss of his daughter to cancer.
CONFLICTS
There are two main conflicts in this book. The first is cancer vs people (man vs body). It is easily the most evident conflict in the story. Although it is the means by which Hazel and Augustus meet, it is also slowly devouring them. It is the reason Hazel has to carry oxygen with her wherever she goes. It is the reason Augustus only has one leg, and it even causes his untimely death. It is because of his lost battle with cancer that Isaac is blind. It also changes and conflicts Hazel and Augustus’s relationship by weakening them and limiting the time that they can spend together. Unfortunately, it is a conflict that no one can do anything about. All they can do is wait for it to run its
course.
The Res Gestae Divi Augustus (‘The Deeds of the Divine Augustus’), also known simply as the Res Gestae was a catalogue of the achievements Augustus had made during his life, specifically those that had an obvious positive impact on the Roman people. It was written in 13-14AD (E.S. Ramage, 1987) and presented to the Vestal Virgins alongside Augustus’ will upon his death in 14AD (M.C. Howatson, 1937). The biography, which was carved into bronze pillars outside of Augustus’ mausoleum (M.C. Howatson, 1937), is split into 35 sections; each recognizing a separate part of Augustus’ excellence. The fifteenth, which will be discussed in this commentary, describes the notable largesses donated to the Roman people by Augustus throughout his
Augustus was born in Rome on September 23, 63 B.C. He was originally named Gaius Octavianus, but when his great-uncle, Julius Caesar, was murdered, he took his name. Augustus’ real father died when his son was only four. Augustus was adopted in Julius Caesar’s will and was left to be his heir at the age of eighteen. Caesar was very fond of his grand-nephew and he sent him to the College of Pontifices at the age of sixteen. When Caesar was assassinated, Augustus was in Illyria, where he was sent to serve. It was only when he returned to Italy that he learned he was his great-uncle’s heir.
Although illness narratives are not novel or new, their prevalence in modern popular literature could be attributed to how these stories can be relatable, empowering, and thought-provoking. Susan Grubar is the writer for the blog “Living with Cancer”, in The New York Times, that communicates her experience with ovarian cancer (2012). In our LIBS 7001 class, Shirley Chuck, Navdeep Dha, Brynn Tomie, and I (2016) discussed various narrative elements of her more recent blog post, “Living with Cancer: A Farewell to Legs” (2016). Although the elements of narration and description (Gracias, 2016) were easily identified by all group members, the most interesting topics revolved around symbolism as well as the overall impression or mood of the post.
The major characters in the story up to and including the protagonist in the story are individuals who are relatively ill behaved and considered as being outcasts not worthy being part of the whole society. The case is however totally different when these key characters are faced by an aspect or a feature that threatens them, “The Duchess, more cheerful than she had been, assumed the care of Piney. Only Mother Shipton--once the strongest of the party--seemed to sicken and fade”. The kind treatment that these characters show towards the two people who approach them illustrate the kindness in them. An important and characteristic aspect of the characters is their ability to live with each other tolerably and encourage each other irrespective of the intensity of the challenges that they are faced with. The death of the characters is noble and illustrates or indicates a great deal of courage in them (Harte, Olivier, & Clark,
The plot of the story, as I previously mentioned is about 16 year old Hazel Grace who meets Augustus Waters at weekly Cancer Support Group. They fall for each other, their relationship growing stronger and blossoming through...
2. Another complication to The Fault in Our Stars, is that a few days after Hazel Grace and Augustus (and their parents as well) start planning for their trip to Amsterdam, things turn for the worst when at night, Hazel Grace’s lungs fill up with fluid. This unsuspected event causes Hazel Grace’s heath to plummet 7 stories down and brings the Amsterdam trip to halt. The highly anticipated trip for the two teenagers, plus her mother, was put on hold because Hazel Grace’s health was so unstable and they couldn’t risk her getting worse or another accident happening while in Amsterdam without the right doctors on hand.
Even if Hazel had made friends the ending would of still remained the same. Family gives a sense of purpose, and sense of care for one another and if Hazel had that his fait could of changed. In this quote it shows that after he killed Solace, he felt a sense of guilt, and sin. He has accepted the fact that sin is real. At this time it was a all time low for Hazel and he needed his family, which could of gave him support and rehabilitate him. Hazel had no reason to be alive because he only had himself to accompany. If he had a family then he could maybe have a reason to live, he could think of the people he was hurting. In the end due to his lack of family it lead Hazel to his downfall of suicide.
He had cancer through most of his childhood but he was currently cancer free and also had to get his leg amputated. As he got older he met a girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster, she also had cancer. They bumped into each other at support group for cancer but Augustus was just going because his friend wanted him there. His best friend was names Isaac. Ever since that day Hazel and Augustus have been infatuated with each other. It was hard for hazel to do much because of her breathing but that didn’t stop her. But sometimes it pushed her to a point where she would have breathing problems in the middle of the night and have to go to the hospital but Augustus was always there by her side. They went on dates together to the park, played video games, and watched movies together. Then their love expands when they go to Amsterdam in search for an ending to a book they both love. As they in Amsterdam, Augustus tells Hazel that he has a recurrence of his cancer and that it has spread all over his body. Hazel was devastated because she knows how it feels to go through that pain. Each day Augustus lives each day to the fullest possible because he knows his time will be soon ending. In his final days Augustus plans a prefuneral for his friend Isaac, hazel, and himself. Augustus dies a few days later. Everybody knew it was coming. This is where I will be changing the movie by Augustus not dying but he almost gets to that point where
...ir relationship Augustus shows Hazel how to live each day to its fullest. Another theme would be the courage within the characters. Hazel and Augustus are cancer patients and they are definitely tougher people because of it. The way they approach their close deaths takes a large amount of courage in itself.
The “scar” is symbolic in a sense that it is not a physical one that he leaves but an emotional one, and the metaphor suggests that a wound/ pain have been inflicted. This quotation refers to the fact that Hazel will be hurt by Augustus’s death. Augustus was dying but he wanted to fall in love with Hazel, which he thought was selfish because he knew it would be unfair because they would be dead in the end, but of course love is inevitable and he is saying he left this “scar” on Hazel. The pain that leaves this scar, however, isn’t harmful, because it shows that Hazel genuinely loved Augustus and that he mattered to her. This form of pain is actually a grave concern for Hazel’s for much of the novel as she worries that she’ll hurt others, especially
Firstly, in Hazel’s early life, he was scarred by his aggressive preacher grandfather who made fear Jesus as a shadow dark figure in his life. In the beginning of the story, the narrator says, “The boy didn't need to hear it. There was already a deep black wordless conviction in him that the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin” (16). This line shows the beginning of his hatred towards Jesus. Throughout the story he talks against Jesus and even founds the “Church without Christ” to preach against what was preached to him. Hazel’s awful past is what ignited his journey to
Hazel does not spend time to socialize or hangout with friends. She prfer been friends with her novel. “I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read books over”(p.3). hazel always reread novel and keeps herself indoor everytime. Hazel’s mother complain a lot about her having friends to spend quality times with, instead of sitting back at home all day. Unlike hazel, augustus spend a lot of his time with friends. He does not thinks too much on his cancer problem. Augustus was that kind of human being who does not bothered with whatever situation they might be going through. Although, both hazel and augustus were cancer victim ,but there way of life is different from one
She thought she was not going to be the one dealing with the heartache. In Green’s book, Augustus says to Hazel, “You realize that trying to keep your distance from me will not lessen my affections for you,” (60). What Gus means to Hazel is, no matter what you do to push me away I will always like you. Hazel pushed Gus away becauses she didn’t want to hurt him when she dies. The author does a great job of showing the theme because Gus doesn’t care what the circumstance and hardships that he will have to face; he just wants to be Hazel’s one and only. Conflict that the author created make it clear that Augustus wants to always be their for
We cannot escape the cycle of life even if we tried, some people are privileged to live longer than others and for some the taste of death may take its toll sooner than you think. In the book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Hazel Grace knows well that death is the possible outcome; she looks at her disease with humour. She playfully shows her sense of humour throughout the book, such as “I didn’t tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! You’re finally a woman. Now die”. Hazel Grace, who is constantly troubled by her illness, struggles to fit in, make friends, enjoy herself and be optimistic. Hazel Grace because of her lung capacity is unable to participate in other extracurricular activities such as running or even walking up the stairs but she does attend support groups where she meets others like her
This novel has repeatedly mentioned about the bonds between family which also mainly consist of the theme love and disguise. But firstly it was the family’s bond which shows the Fitzgeralds Family has been staying ultimately strong and never disassociate into pieces throughout the whole process of the court case, hospitalization and arguments. From starting of the novel, Anna’s parents went for a test and examine to see if they could be part of Kate’s donor .They are willing to sacrifice themselves to donate either bone marrow or organs to her daughter, Kate to ensure that she will stay alive a...
