Identify a Topic in Your Specialization My topic of interest for research was student engagement with audience response systems. The purpose of this assignment was to discuss why the topic was to be studied, the presumptions of the topic, the personal experience with the topic that would create obstacles or bias, how the topic will benefit the field of education, and if the topic was sufficient for a Capstone project.
Reason for Study of this Topic The reason for interest in audience response systems was to see if it would benefit student engagement. By using audience response systems in the classroom, Thomas et al. (2015) stated that the audience response system brought instant feedback and participation to the classroom. Thomas et al. also noted that giving students the opportunity to respond in a classroom setting correlated to higher success. According to Thomas et al., students stated that they were held more responsible for their reading assignments. Russell et al. (2016) stated that audience response systems provided a rich active learning environment to students, reduced instructors’ workload in facilitating activities, contributed to effective teaching and collaborative learning, managed formative assessments and feedback, and allowed for customized teaching to fit students’ needs. Findlay-Thompson, Mombourquette, Thompson, and Blotnicky (2015) stated that it was hard to make an association between the use of audience response systems and students’ grades.
Personal Experience with the Topic and Benefit to the Field of Education The personal experience that I have with audience response systems was that I used them for quizzes, exams, and classroom discussions. The ease of use for grading quizzes and exams and finding misconceptions could lead to a bias for the use of the audience response systems. Audience response systems would be a different mode of technology to engage and evaluate students, and this would benefit the field of education.
Topic Sufficient
The movie “Philadelphia” shows our society in the workforce and the discrimination that can take place because of an illness or sexual orientation. In this movie Andy Beckett, a fully competent Philadelphia lawyer, is fired from the firm wheeler & Co. because he has AIDS and because he is homosexual. According to the statutes, the American with Disabilities Act, it is unlawful for an employer to fire an individual because of a terminal illness such as cancer or in this case AIDS. Moreover in the movie Andy was diagnosed with HIV, and he does not tell his supervisors in the firm for his sickness and that he is homosexual. However this does not impede the man’s performance, and if the illness does not impede in the performance in the job, the employer has not reason to fire you. Which in this case is not true because more often the law and morality are not one and the same. Formative assessment to inform instruction and guide student learning is being underutilized. Many students are not given feedback that is effective in helping them see where they are in regard to reaching the learning goals or that provides plan for moving them forward to achieve that goal. Students are not always given the opportunity to take an active role in the learning process by regularly assessing themselves and their peers as they work to achieve their learning goals. The purpose of this study is to determine how the use of formative assessment with immediate feedback using student response systems will impact student learning. This study will also investigate the effect that student involvement in self-evaluation has on learning.

Students will respond to readings in their journal and answer/ask questions about the text to help prepare them for class discussions.
"When we talk about communication, we are talking about peoples' lives, no less than that - so there really are no degrees of freedom. If we get it wrong, if we miss the boat - people drown" (Mirenda, 2008). I feel that it is our duty to provide not only meaningful education but a means in which the students are given the tools necessary to function and communicate to the best of their abilities and AAC can do this. The Assistive Technology tools can assist the students to improve their communication and have a bright future in which they are a productive, independent adults.
We are all influenced by our schema, which is an expected situation structure formed from cultural background and past experiences. We expect certain scenarios to have certain structures, but that may not always be the case. In the given scenario, I am an interpreter that is contacted by the interpreter referral service and I am asked to interpret a performance review for a Deaf man. The Deaf man works on the production floor of the Gillette Company and I have never met him before.
Therefore, all students will quickly learn to read the assigned work before class. At the beginning of every semester, Professor Murphy needs to state that a large portion of the students’ grades will come from discussion participation. She needs to keep a log of students who do respond with healthy (learned information) comments and at the end of the semester, those who did not participate will be graded as such. At the beginning of the semester our class was introduced to a new term, listenability. The level of listenability is at the mercy of the speaker, not of the audience. During our semester, we were taught to harness the listenability keys of strategy, structure, support, and style in order to achieve a high level of listenability. Examples of listenability include when a speaker engages the audience by asking questions, using narratives or stories that people can relate to, and has stimulating visual support and content. These are only a couple of keys used to create a listener centered speech.

Having students teach each other is a way to promote a deeper learning of the content. Teaching to others promotes independence and confidence. This activity also improves the student’s public speaking skills. It also is a good stepping stone to the necessary presentations and performance assessments. Performing for an audience that will actually provide feedback is a new concept for most. This is an area that will need plenty of positive reinforcement and skill development. The student can store often used responses, and prepare anticipated answers prior to situations where he will be meeting with those less familiar with his speech capabilities. By implementing this type of device, the student has become more confident and can communicate appropriately for a student his age. In this instance, the integration of technology into the learning environment may make a difference as to whether the student is employable or overlooked due to the inability to communicate well on the job.

I did not know before using the Technopedia site that there were so many different types of student response systems. I always just imagined the basic student response system with four A, B, C, and D buttons. However, the fact that you can have student response systems that allow for elaboration to open-response questions make this technological tool even more useful and effective. With so much pressure on standardized testing, this tool allows teachers to question and rank the knowledge of each individual student. Furthermore, because of the abilities of current Smartphones, the expensiveness of student response systems goes out the window in a classroom that allows cell phone use. I truly believe that both of these technologies can truly change and positively effect education.

Assessing student understanding is important but as a teacher you need to provide feedbacks to the students. During my lesson, I allowed the student to ask questions and tried to answer each individual’s answer right away. Since my students are not able to read or write I had to provide feedbacks by verbally.
