Speaker Credibility & Audience Relevance. As an aspiring nutrition coach, exercise science student, and someone who has attempted nearly every “fad diet” that exists. I am fully aware of the misinformation and confusion surrounding the “proper diet”. I would like to preface my speech by stating that I am not a trained professional or registered dietitian. The main macro-nutrients consist of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Each macro-nutrient source contains a different number of calories per gram. For example, protein/carbohydrates are 4 calories per gram and fat (lipids) is 9 calories per gram. The best sources of protein are lean meats, poultry, and dairy products. Meanwhile, carbohydrates are usually separated into two categories, known as complex or simple carbohydrates. For example, complex carbohydrates are typically lower on the glycemic index (a scale measuring how food impacts blood sugar levels), and are digested slowly such as potatoes, oats, and rice. On the contrary, simple carbohydrates are higher on the glycemic index and digest quickly, such as honey, fruits, and sugar. In addition, it is highly recommended to consume monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as nuts, avocados, and oils. Lastly, it is important to understand the primary functions of each macronutrient. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Foundations of Strength & Conditioning, “Proteins serve as the building blocks of bodily tissue and perform a number of critical functions within the human body” (Ratames, 2020, p. 52). Furthermore, carbohydrates are metabolized and stored in the liver and skeletal muscles as glycogen for energy use.
