Space food are variety of food that are created and processed for consumption by astronauts in outer space. The NASA early astronauts had to eat in space in order to do a testament. John Glenn was the first American man who went on the moon who ate in a space environment that was weightless, and discovered that the task of eating was fairly easy. Several astronauts ate items that were bite-sized cubes, made from powders and semi liquids which were wrapped in aluminum tubes. Most astronauts agreed that the foods were not fulfilling or unappetizing and dislike the fact that they had to squeeze the food from tube like items. Moreover, the food was hard to rehydrate and crumbs had to be prevented from fouling instruments. The Scientist complained about going on missions to test and improve the food that they ate. The foods that were manufactured were always in squeeze tube. As a matter of fact, the bite-sized were coated with gelatin to reduce crumbling, and the freeze-dried foods were not very tasty (NASA). If they had an improved packages of food the food quality and menus would be more fulfilling for the astronauts. So, the astronauts had food such as: chicken, vegetables, butterscotch pudding, apple sauce and combinations of selective of foods that they would like. However, with the initiation of the Apollo program, the quality of the food was improved with a variety of foods to choose from. The Apollo astronauts were the first to have hot water, resulted in food being rehydrated foods easily. They were also the first to use spoon, bowl, and plastic containers. As years went by, the task of eating in space got a big boost from Skylab; additional, there were tables and rooms for the astronauts to have their lunch. There were ... ... middle of paper ... ...ve also discovered, researched, and experimented in trying to find new ways into growing crop in space. The agency also recently announced plans to grow cress, turnips and much more. In order, for them to do so they will need to protect the plants from harmful radiation and the lack of atmosphere. That is not the only research NASA is trying to experiment on how people can actually live and grow crops on the moon. Moreover, growing plants on the moon would be very challenging because the moon surface temperature is about 150 degree and on the other side it is negative 150 degrees. So, if they had to grow plants on the moon for astronauts to eat, the plants that NASA send up there would be expose to the temperature and harsh radiation. This is just the first step in the experiment of trying to exploring crops on the moon and how astronauts are able to eat in space.
