Assessment of the View that The World’s Wife is Nothing but Feminist Propaganda I do not agree that The World’s Wife is “nothing but feminist propaganda”. The World’s Wife conveys feminist issues and shows an inequality between men and women but also contains other issues such as social acceptance, self-confidence and love. Most of the poems contain some aspect of feminism and female dominance but most of the poems also contain other important issues. For example Mrs Quasimodo ‘s main issue within the text is the idea of social acceptance and appearance. Mrs Quasimodo “wed” Quasimodo and believed that she loved him. Mrs Quasimodo uses “stricken bells” to describe the place where they first “fucked”. The word “stricken” suggests pain and grief revealing that she felt uncomfortable with where they “fucked”. The word “fucked” shows the way that she felt about the act that took place between her and Quasimodo; it implies that she felt unwanted by him and unimportant to him. Mrs Quasimodo feels low about herself and her appearance she sees herself as a “pig”, a “stupid cow”, a “fucking buffalo”, a “Cripple”, a “Mongol” and an “Ape”, this reveals the underline of the true meaning of the poem. It illustrates a lack of self-confidence and self-respect; this is portrayed within the poem Mrs Quasimodo. Also Mrs Midas illustrates a different issue within the poem. The poem shows the love for a male partner but also shows a disappointment when he shows selfishness and a disregarded for her and her feelings. The poem shows that women need men for love and comfort and the loss women feel when their gone. This is the complete opposite to the feminist point of view, which would show that women are better without men. Mrs Midas first felt that Midas was greedy and selfish but then she was upset that he showed such a “lack of thought” for her and that’s what she was most upset with. Mrs Midas missed “his hands” on her skin and “his touch” the most.
