Why Are Diet Drinks Unhealthy? According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-fifth of the world’s population drink diet drinks daily (2010). Looking at the nutrition labels on sugary sugary or diet sodas, a person would most likely choose the diet over the regular drinks. However, diet sodas are not as healthy as one might would think. Diet drinks contain aspartame, which has rarely been spoken about. What is aspartame? How does it affect a person’s body? Aspartame is the artificial sweetener commonly found in “sugar-free” sodas. However, most of them do not know the consequences of the drug. Aspartame is composed of two amino acids, aspartic acid, and phenylalanine. Aspartic acid affects brain processing, which causes severe headaches or migraines. This amino acid is found in almost all dietary proteins, but the acid has more content in drinks. Phenylalanine can be lead to brain damage. Also, there is an extra carbon atom known as methanol, which is found in antifreeze. It is harmless when taken in as small quantities, and is found in several fruits and vegetables (Yoquinto, 2012). The drug has been known to cause brain cancer, diabetes, emotional disorders, and seizures (Mercola, n.d.). Most individuals do not think to blame the drug for these symptoms occurring in their lives, however. Diet drinks are known to have an addictive quality to them, which makes it harder to quit drinking them once you have acquired a taste for the soda.
After becoming aware of the dangers of aspartame, one might ask, how much aspartame is safe? “The FDA has set the acceptable daily intake of aspartame at 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight” (Pratini, 2014). Therefore, drinking small amounts of aspartame daily obviously will not affect a person as much as drinking several drink cans daily would. Aspartame, or more commonly known as NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful and Equal Measure; was discovered purely by chance in 1965 by a chemist named James M. Schlatter, who was testing an antacid drug (Prantini; 2014). The commercial industry believed that “a wonder product” had been discovered, which stood to revolutionise the food industry as an artificial sweetener. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener which is found in many of our foods and beverages universally. Aspartame is two-hundred times sweeter than sugar and is commonly used as a tabletop sweetener, a sweetener in prepared foods, diet foods or drinks, flavored waters, chewing gum, condiments and is even found in flavoring of medicines. It is found in majority of our food products marketed for weight control (Prantini; 2014). Aspartame has a sweeter taste in comparison to sugar, and therefore less of the sweetener can be used in food products in order to achieve the same level of sweetness as if sugar was used; which results in an individual consuming fewer calories and less sugar (American Cancer Society; 2014).
Overall, the consumption of aspartame is not so beneficial. The chemical component of aspartame may be broken down to chemical substances that are potentially harmful and may lead to symptoms such as headaches, vision impairment, hearing loss, memory loss, fatigue, dizziness, and eventually brain tumors. The sweetener may have been developed to lower the amount of calories and be a sugar substitute, but its creation has only produced medical attention. The consumption of aspartame should be limited or not be consumed at all in order to prevent symptoms from occurring. The creation of aspartame may not be so sweet after all.

Stress, anxiety, and sleeping problems are some of the top complaints college age energy drink users complain about (Stasio et al.). Sugary/energy drinks are prominent in students, both high school and college age. Ninety percent of these users are blind to the “hazardous effects” of the drinks that they consume (Attila and Cakir), innocently poisoning their bodies.
