Artist: Natalia Goncharova
Biography: Natalia Goncharova is famous for her renowned works, specifically her paintings. In 1881, Goncharova was born in Navaego, a part of the Tula Governorate in Russia. She was born into luxury, her family was considered of the noble class, and she was a descendant of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Her father, Sergei, worked as an architect and her mother, Ekaterina, came from a long line of music influencers and religious figures. Natalia lived in the country during her childhood, which proved to be very significant because she developed a long-lasting admiration for nature. Early on in her adolescence, she moved to Moscow, Russia’s capital, because of financial troubles and educational opportunities.

The couple formed a similar group called the Donkey’s Tail. It was more radical and included famous artists like Marc Chagall. While she was involved in this group, she was heavily inspired by her love for the Orthodox Church. Despite her devotion, she was condemned by the church for living with a man but being unmarried. Goncharova was aware of these complaints but continued to go against the church by wearing men’s clothing and occasionally going topless with art on her chest. She could be considered an early feminist because she was “merging art making and daily life to challenge social expectations” (1). One of the most important aspects of her life was developing the art movement of Rayonism, which is a type of abstract art.
After the Russian Revolution, the couple moved to Paris permanently, where they lived for many years. There she became involved in stage productions and designed numerous sets. Her and Larionov finally married in 1955. They lived together in Paris for the rest of their days, when Natalia died from Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 81. The first painting, Flowers, is an example of her experimentation with cubism. Cubo - Futurism was a combination of cubist shapes and Italian Futurism’s emphasis on speed and motion. This can be seen through the use of skewed angles and bent shapes. In the next painting, Goncharova took inspiration from the previously mentioned Matisse. This style was called Fauvism and was recognizable for its “wild brush work and strident colors” (Source 2). The fourth painting, the still life, can also be related to Fauvism because the Post-Impressionism movement is thought of like its father, an earlier precursor. The fifth painting, the motifs, resembles these previous works of Natalia’s but also showcases work influenced by her relationship to the Russian Orthodox Church. Most importantly, there is the painting Rayonist Lilies, which is from the movement Rayonism, which Goncharova and her husband pioneered. This movement is characterized by attempting to “[float] beyond abstraction, out of time and space, and to break the barriers between the artist and the public” (Source 6). Culture in the Soviet Union possessed many stages as different leaders enforced very different rules in regard to accepted art forms. Under Lenin, many forms and styles of art were accepted as long as they were not overly detrimental to the party mission. Lenin wanted to find a signature style of art that would be unique to the Soviet Union. In order to do this Lenin put very little restriction on the arts. Great experimentation was done in writing and painting and many radical styles were developed during this time. All the artist during that time all portrayed similar ideas that were introverted abstract art. Artist started portraying common objects in an abstract expressionism that were aggressive and emotional. During this era, Basquiat and other similar artist created pieces that were rich in detail that demonstrated different aspects of life. Mia Hebib is a Bosnian born artist based out of New York, who works primarily in jewelry design and sculptural forms. She was in a show called “Islam Contemporary” at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts on August 2, 2013. Mia Hebib started her education as a jewler at the School for Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb, Croatia. In 2001, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metals and Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Mia moved to New York City to continue her exploration in metal. She started a corporate jewelry design career with Jacmel Jewelry, Liz Claiborne, Henri Bendel and BCBG Generation and offered design consultation to Tory Burch jewelry design team. Since she was part of a corporate jeweler, she became distanced from her fine art background. In order to rekindle her fine art roots, she launched her series “Oblik Atelier”. After her experiences working with corporate jewelry,she wanted to return to hand crafted work rather than working as a jewelry designer.
Frida Kahlo was an amazing woman whose many tragedies influenced her to put her stories into her paintings. She was born in July 6th 1907 to a Mexican Roman Catholic mother who was of Indian and Spanish decent and a German photographer father. Frida had three sisters, Mitilde and Adriana, who were older and Christina who was younger. She learned about Mexican history, art and architecture by looking at her father’s photography. When Frida was six she got polio and it was a long time before she would heal completely. After surviving polio, Frida’s right leg became weak and thin, so her father encouraged her to play sports to help her.
Mary Cassatt is one of the most famous female figures in the art world and aided in the popularization of Impressionism. Her work was simple yet impactful, and left its viewers wanting more. The main focus in most of her works was of mother and child or of women doing simple daily tasks. Her broken brush strokes and bright color palettes made her pieces pleasant and full of life. Though her work was not at first accepted, she kept painting and worked hard to make a name for herself and to change the art world into something more diverse and accepting.
Ruska Dolina was a small Ruthenian suburb of Pittsburgh. It was populated with, of course, eastern European immigrants. Andy Warhol was born into this very close-knit neighborhood speaking his parent's native tongue. Julia Warhola was herself a bit of an artist, in later years she would collaborate with her youngest son. Andrej Warhola worked in the great steel mills of Pittsburgh. The Warhola household was very typical of the times. Julia would stay home, cook, and read to her boys while Mr. Warhola worked in a steel mill sweatshop with hundreds of other immigrants. The family was strictly Eastern Orthodox Catholics. On Sunday, the day of rest, no one was allowed to move. These days were passed indoors with Mrs. Warhola telling stories to the boys.
Throughout history art has played a major role in society. It started out with paintings and went to photography and eventually to films. Artistic interpretation depended on whom the artist was and what he or she wanted to present to the audience. When it came to portraiture, whether it was paintings or photography, the idea of mimesis was very important. However important this may have been, the portraits were mostly products of the media and fashions during that time period. Whatever was popular during the time was used such as columns or curtains in the background. The face was the main focus in the painting and there was little focus on the body. Later on during photography the body was focused on more. Even though photography was used much later after paintings were used, it allowed the artist even more artistic interpretation because of the ability to play a different role and not having to be ones self. The artists that will be focused on are Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman. They lived during different periods and their artistic intentions varied because of that. They also had similarities in that they thought outside of the conventional roles. These women were both self-portraiture artists and although they were considered that their interpretations did not always make their portraits self-portraits. Traditionally the artist was an outsider, but when it came to self-portraiture they became the subject and the audience became the outsider. The similarities and differences of Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman’s art were tied into the strength and also vulnerability they had because of their roles as women. They wanted the audience to see a background story to the portraits and not just an image of a beautiful face.
I think that Frida's life greatly influenced her paintings. Most of her paintings have some form of nature or wildlife featured in them. Not only did she display a theme of nature, she also liked to wear indian women clothing. Her style is realistic and lifelike. She has many paintings that fall into the categories of symbolism, surrealism, cubism, modern art, and magical realism. Not only that, a lot of her paintings have herself in them. The color use of Frida Kahlo is very lifelike, she uses natural colors; she doesn't use many bright colors. She uses many primary colors. I have also noticed that a few of her paintings exhibit monkeys. Her paintings remind me of the Mexican culture that I studied in my two year Spanish class. Artemisia’s paintings are very feministic. I believe that Artemisia put her life into her paintings as well. The paintings of Artemisia Gentileschi that I have seen all have women displayed in them; whether they are her, or other women. I would recognize her paintings because almost all of her artwork features a woman reaching out for something. Women in these paintings have a facial expression, that is the same in almost all of her works. Artemisia had very lifelike paintings, they were beautiful but also displayed a tense mood. Born into the wealthy Gorska family in Poland, Warsaw. Tamara De lempicka was the middle child of four. She had an older brother named Stanczyk Gorski and a younger sister Adrienne, who were both bossed around by their tempestuous sister. Her father who was an attorney for a French trading company and her mother who was a well educated aristocrat had properly brought up Tamara and her siblings. However, around the age of 12-13, the Gorska family split up, sending Tamara to St. Petersburg where a wealthy relative of hers lived. The wealthy grandma spoilt her, with vacations to Italy and other renaissance countries which were considered as the beginnings of her artistic inspirations.
His styles and techniques were so particular and well-liked, that he succeeded regardless of the trends going on around him; The Dance (1910) being the perfect example, for it was loved and hated by many. By the 1920's, he was increasingly noticed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. He was appreciated for bringing that traditional style painting into the modern age and not allowing it to die out like many other artistic traditions had.11 Even though he had been firmly criticized for how he painted, he was still respected for his eclectic style of line and brushwork. Matisse dreamt of, "an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling subject matter" (MA, 38).12 He did this by painting things with simple detail, and also with a light, airy, feel. He wanted to convey the message of classical art, as well as very modern styles of art. As he was influenced by many, he, later on, influenced other great modern artists. He carefully prepared his works but chose colors spontaneously and freely, this is what he called instinct. Like his art, Matisse's career is tightly consolidated. The painting was done near the beginning of the twentieth century when science was developing at a rapid rate. Einstein's Theory of Relativity was gaining ground at the time. Malevich's painting seemed to borrow from this theory that attempted to explain relative motion. His suprematism style attempted to capture a neo-realism in painting portraying pure feeling and perception. This new style was communicated by the discarding of natural references. Malevich grew tired of painting in the traditional style with everything looking and feeling the way they are in life. His new style tried to free viewer from their traditional a priori views concerning shape and colors imposed on them by their senses. Suprematist style focuses was on depictions of movement and dynamism. Flight and anti-gravity fascinated Malevich. Much of his paintings were a top down view of the subjects arranged on a white background. The white background represents infinite space, while the subjects were reduced to geometric blocks. The message of the paintings comes out in the relative position of the blocks to the background. The infinite background of the paintings is to divorce the paintings from the finite earth. Malevich himself said that his paintings "do not belong to the earth exclusively." The paintings sought to transcend to a different level. Malevich's suprematist style sought to take people to the fourth dimension, which was pure sensation.
