This essay is based on the semiotic and formal analysis of design differences and comparisons between art deco and art nouveau. the two movements surround the events of world war 1 mainly and influenced but political and social events within the western cultures such as France, England and America. both art movements play a significant role in representing the way people lived socially and representing such aspects of their life spans as wealth, religious views and political and economic influences.
The movement art nouveau was established during the 1890s .It lacked the grandiose aura about its presence and techniques that art deco possessed but made up for this with longevity in its impact and success as an art movement. Art nouveau is a movement that has been inspired by forms of nature itself and this was represented in the results of nouveau inspired products such as curtains with excessively frilly trimmings and the influx of indoor gardens or greenhouses. the main forms of this natural influence on this art for was vegetation which what basically flowers petals branches etc. At this early stage, mass publications of art and design were being shown in museums and also public and local galleries which was the fragile start of art nouveau cultural life.
The main perception through the role of art and design in this period placed by art nouveau practitioners is intriguingly relevant to the collections of historic art found within the V&A museum. As a result, we can understand how Neo-Classical art is an attempt to counter the values of Rococo. Rococo is a form of art directly targeted to the privileged. Because not everyone in society belongs to the aristocracy, the Neo-Classicist wanted to impose order as an alternative to the frivolous life style. As a result, we have to works of art that challenge each other’s ideals. The theme of infidelity versus loyalty and how one arrives at the decision made is animated in the works of Fragonard and David. Art Deco as an art mover has had a lot of influence in the history of arts and was under the influence of the past art movements and different cultures, the present lifestyle and the societies of the life changing World War I and II. In design Art Deco was glamorous and in style it was luxurious. Major influences were the styles of art and the French crafts of high standards, different cultures and avant-grade art. It wasn’t just a normal style that reflected adventure, entertainment and leisure but a highly enjoyed taste by all classes of people with different minds after Second World War. This style is a visual art that was first used in France by Le Corbusier who got more accreditation in l’Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs, and after the WW1, it was later used internationally in 1920s, and became more popular after WW2. Art Deco is an eclectic style that became famous after the industrial revolution and the integration of machine in design, it combines traditional crafts motifs and machine materials. Some of the design characteristics are rich colors, lavish ornamentation and bold geometric forms.
During the late sixteenth century a new style of art, known as Mannerist, emerged through out Italy as a result of the Protestant Reformation. Mannerist distorted art was justified because it served mid way between the ideal, natural, symmetrical and the real, artificial, and unbalanced. Meanwhile Mannerist architecture often employs classical elements in a new and unusual way that defies traditional formulas.
Art is all around us. The architectural design of buildings to the ornamentation of jewelry and art is in almost everything. To those who have little prior knowledge of certain architecture styles and or influences, a building can appear, as just a building and a piece of jewelry can appear as just that. Thesis: The French Revolution transformed not only the French society, but also had a huge influence and marked impact on what the purposes of the arts and their expression were now, making profound changes in what they would supposed to be used for, in the form of the Neoclassic works of art that made their appearance prior to the French Revolution, in which very special emphasis is given to the patriotic, the nationalist feeling, together with a strong sense of self-sacrifice that should be present in every person’s heart.

Contemporary architects, in various forms, continue on with the post-modern legacy of taking inspiration from history and seek out to use traditional building methods not only for convenience but also economical, environmental, contextual and symbolic reasons.

Line was the most important aspect of the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was a rebellion against machine made articles of the 19th century that were copies of past designs. Art Nouveau was also a reaction against the old Victorian tradition. Art Nouveau designers borrowed from the past but because of the emphasis on line and adaptation of natural forms to design. Art Nouveau is easily distinguishable from any other period in decorative arts.
In conclusion, the art of the 19th century was composed of a sequence of competing artistic movements that sought to establish its superiority, ideologies and style within the artistic community of Europe. These movements, being Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, ultimately spread far beyond the confines of Europe and made modern art an international entity which can still be felt in today’s artistic world.
