An art director is a broad spectrum role. Art directors can be in charge of newspapers, magazines, television, movies or any other type of visual stylized piece of work. Within the advertising and graphic design fields, art directors play the lead role in creating a visual concept. They are in charge of overseeing the artists and designers that create the message the client is looking for (Bureau of Labor). It is up to the art director to follow through with the ideas of the creative director. The creative director is in charge of the overall concept. In a chain of command, the creative director would be above the art director. The creative director has the initial ideas and thoughts while the art director ensures that the idea is brought to life. New and ever changing technology allows endless possibilities for design. As a creative director, it is important to grow with technology and the times. Coming up with a new and creative idea can be difficult with the mass production in advertising and graphic design. With the new technological era, it is much harder to come up new ideas. Now a single design can be quickly replicated with seconds, so the creative director works closely with a copywriter. As with the creative director, the art director has an important role in this new era. There are many new areas to be in charge of than just print advertising and print graphics. Twenty years ago, it wasn’t as easy to get ideas around the world. Now it is with a click of a button. Having up to date skills, team members and equipment is only the beginning.
