Arnold Friend’s attempt to lure in Connie shows that he is not just any supernatural force, he is the devil himself. Connie does not view Arnold Friend as the devil, because she is oblivious to her own surroundings and is very easily fooled. When Arnold pulls into the driveway, Connie decides to make herself look nice and chat with the stranger. Instead of calling the cops, she puts herself in a dangerous place that eventually kills her, which is the devil himself. Arnold Friend can be considered the devil through his appearance, his actions, his speech, and his supernatural visions/clues. Arnold Friend can be seen as the devil mostly shown through his appearance. Friend tries to appear much younger than he actually is. Arnold is not able to step into Connie’s house, instead he has to lure her out of her house. This implies that the supernatural law that cannot be broken, which is one similar to that of vampires not being able to step into a human’s home/property without an invitation. Arnold marks an “X” symbol in the air giving Connie the inability to escape Arnold Friend. “X” can be looked at as a threat, a symbol of not being able to escape the devil, or even becoming the devils slave/property. Connie’s rebellious lifestyle has led her down this path of sin. She lies to her parents, abandons her best friend, and dresses very scandalously in making her appear “easy”. Arnold Friend states in the beginning “Gonna get you, baby”, as a way of letting Connie know that once she steps down the path of sin and lies, the devil is bound to get you, which he eventually does. Arnold’s ability to foresee things show that he has supernatural powers.
