Arguments Against Internet Neutrality

Eighty-seven percent of Americans use the internet today. This is a 187.1 percent increase from the year 2000. This is a number that has nearly tripled in size in just fifteen years. Americans use the internet for many reasons as well. We use various sites for entertainment including Netflix or Hulu for streaming movies and TV shows or Facebook or Twitter for social media. We also use the internet for productivity in businesses. We can see the internet being used in both the largest companies and the smallest businesses. From a student’s standpoint I can also attest to most of my homework being based online. As you can see, the internet has become a necessity in today’s modern age. But what if the company that provides this service all of a sudden greatly limited the speed of the content you receive unless the website you visit has the money to pay for faster speeds. This could translate to slower speeds, higher membership rates, and loss of smaller websites for you, the consumer. This all could be avoided through two similar ideas. While this conservative approach fits well into many situations, the internet is an always-changing and susceptible area that calls for a more proactive approach. That is why internet service provider’s individual power should be decreased by both increasing the number of ISPs and by making it impossible for them to block or regulate certain traffic, through the idea of net neutrality. These large companies won’t hesitate to regulate and control the internet to maximize profits, and we as the consumers have to be the ones to stand up and fight against it. It was us, the consumers, who were the ones that spoke out to the FCC for net neutrality, and it’s going to have to be us to keep the internet free and open for
