Gatsby Argumentative Paper The message that is provided by The Great Gatsby is that everyone has a chance at success, yet on the contrary, many will never be able to reach it without status. The novel tells the story of a young boy who started from the unprosperous James Gatz to the bountiful Jay Gatsby. Throughout the story, Fitzgerald paints a picture for the reader of what Gatsby stands for. At first glance, many would conclude that Gatsby is deserving of the title of the Great. Characters in the book are bewitched by his opulent parties and intriguing personality. In a story where Jay Gatsby is perceived as the influential character, his origin, failure to obtain Daisy, and fall from glory proves to the reader how he does not achieve greatness. A golden throne on which people placed him was quick to crumble. While he was breathing, society celebrated him. Unfortunately, as soon as the bullet is embedded in his chest, Gatsby's hopes of greatness are demolished. Despite the title of Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, the story being told is one of misfortune and defeat. As his time on Earth passed, so did the glitz and glamor that surrounded him. His great parties, crowded by hundreds of people, were always the talk of town. After his death, his mansion was left an utter ghost town. This is a result of how partygoers took a great interest in what he represented, not who he was. He sparked people's imagination and hopes that they as well bring glory to their name. If Gatsby were to be great, more people would come to commemorate and respect the life he has lived in this world. “The minister glanced several times at his watch, so I took him aside and asked him to wait for half an hour.
