The Great Gatsby is a short novel by F. Scott. Fitzgerald. The Great Gatsby is a fictional book that was first published April 10, 1925. Fitzgerald wanted to showcase the ways of society and class in America, in the Roaring Twenties or the 1920s. When the book was published, not many copies were sold, only 20,000 copies were sold within the first year. Fitzgerald was inspired by his relationship with his wife, Zelda. Fitzgerald and his were known for always drinking too much, they were prone to serious depression and self-destructive behaviour. No one ever accused the couple of frugality. Nick goes to West Egg to live close to his cousin, Daisy Fay Buchanan and to have a job in New York in the bond business.
Daisy invites Nick over when he gets moved in, at Daisy's house he meets a girl named Jordan Baker who is a famous golfer but cheats at the game. Jordan asks Nick if he knows a man named Gatsby, Daisy frantically asks what Gatsby, for she knew him. Later on in the book Gatsby invites Nick to a party, he is the first person to ever receive an invitation to one of Gatsby's parties, everyone just went. When he gets to his party he starts asking for Gatsby, well to his disadvantage has ever seen Gatsby except for Jordan who finds nick at the party. Jordan takes nick to find Gatsby and Gatsby wishes to talk to Jordan alone. He explains everything to her, why he has the parties, why he is rich, how he knows Daisy and what he wants. The next day he asks Nick to invite Daisy to tea while Gatsby was over. When Nick agreed, Gatsby had his staff go to Nick's house and cut his grass to make it look better and to just say thank you to Nick. The evening Gatsby shows up for tea and Daisy does not show up till around four o'clock. When Nick sees how things are going, he decides to leave for a little while and let them catch up. Gatsby invites Nick and Daisy to his house to show off what he has to Daisy. Tom has a
mistress that he goes to see quite often, her name is Myrtle Wilson. Myrtle is married to a man named George Wilson and he owns a garage to which Tom goes to a lot. Throughout the story you see that Daisy is aware of Tom's mistress but is unaware of who she is. Daisy invites Gatsby over to her house one day and they decide to go to town. Daisy tells Tom to go with Nick and Jordan and she will ride with Gatsby. Gatsby and Daisy go on ahead of them because Tom has to get gas in Gatsby's car. When they stop to get gas at Mr. Wilson's garage, Mr. Wilson is crying because he has found he dog leash for the dog Tom bought Myrtle but he does not know Tom bought her the dog. When Myrtle sees Tom with Jordan, she becomes infuriated with Tom. When they arrive in New York, they did not have anything planned so they went to the Plaza Hotel and had some drinks. Tom gets mad that Daisy is having an affair with Gatsby and Nick finds it funny because Tom is doing the same thing and has been doing it for far longer than Daisy. Eventually Daisy finds out about Myrtle and is with Gatsby one night and drives by the garage when Myrtle runs out in front of the car, in hopes of it being Tom. Unfortunately it is Daisy welcoming her to death in Gatsby's car. When Daisy kills Myrtle, Gatsby makes sure no one knows it was Daisy. When Tom finds out about Myrtle's death he is upset but thinks little of the situation. When Tom finds out the car belonged to Gatsby, he told Mr. Wilson Gatsby killed your wife. This cause Mr. Wilson to become angry and want revenge. Mr. Wilson gets a gun and goes to Gatsby's house, when he sees Gatsby he shoots him dead. After Mr. Wilson shoots Gatsby he the gun to himself and kills himself. The irony of Gatsby's funeral is that everyone went to his parties but no one wanted to go to his funeral. The day of his funeral, Daisy did not show, she did not even send a flower.
