Everywhere in the world, people argue over whether or not books should be banned. Books are challenged and banned because of the content inside of them. There are various reasons as to why a book is banned. One of the reasons why books are being challenged and banned is because of the sexual content that may lie in the book. The author of Book Banning states that parents challenge books “...to protect children from sexually explicit content, offensive language, and other “unsuitable” content” (Book Banning). What the author is saying is that parents are trying to protect their children from the sexual and explicit content inside of certain books. Also, the author states, “Moreover, nearly a third of challenges… the challengers found the materials to be too sexually explicit” (Book Banning). The evidence shown by the author proves that many of the challenges to books are in fact from the books containing sexual content. These explanations prove that books should be banned. Another reason why books should be banned is that the words used in the book are considered too vulgar. According to the author of “Book Banning”, The author of “Book Banning” states, “Parents were responsible for 57% of such challenges between 1990 and 2008…(Book Banning). The evidence shows that there are parents challenging books because they think of their children, and do not want them reading a book they think is too indecent. Moreover, the author also claims, “... an astonishing 70% of the challenges involved books that were either in a school classroom or a school library” (Book Banning). The evidence claimed by the author proves that many parents are protecting their children from content they think is indecent.
