Women of color. It’s time to get serious about our mental health. And it seems that many of us are on the same page regarding taking care of our mental wellness.
Recently, Therapy for Black Girls, has been applauded for its candid conversations about mental health awareness and therapy for women of color. Despite the belief in communities of color that suggest mental health conditions do not affect us, it seems that more women of color are seeking help through counseling sessions.
If therapy is new to you, and you have not previously sought help from a mental health professional, then you can be unsure of where to begin. Here are four factors to consider when you are searching for a therapist.
Gender
The gender of a therapist can either be a crucial factor or an insignificant one to a future patient. Some women find they are only comfortable talking to a counselor of the same sex, while others may be content with both male and female therapists. Selecting a therapist based on gender is a personal preference and you should not feel any shame for your decision. In your session, you will be revealing your genuine thoughts and feelings, so you must be comfortable with the counselor you pick. If you are unsure if you prefer a therapist of a certain gender, maybe try a few male and female therapists to figure out if there is any uneasiness when sharing.
