The Odyssey Argumentative
The Odyssey is an epic poem written by Homer. It was eventually turned into a movie as per most pieces of historically important literature. Although most people prefer the movie version of books, I think that the written poem tell the story of The Odyssey better than the movie. In the movie version, I feel as if Odysseus isn’t really portrayed as a hero as much. I honestly see him as someone who got himself into trouble, and us (viewers) spend an hour or so watching him trying to solve his own problems. Almost every movie is like that. In the text, you are able to read more. The adjectives are vivid, and give Odysseus a hero-type persona. For an example, in “The Sirens”, Odysseus is deemed more of a hero. He saves his men from a voluntary suicide. He suffers through the song of the Sirens in order to save his men. The movie doesn’t even have this story in it. In the literature, it takes a lot of thinking to picture a many of the things Odysseus goes through. The movie makes it easier to do that. It’s basically a reenactment. While you’re reading, you have to focus on the text, as well as keep a picture of what’s

I know movies are supposed to be exciting, but I felt as if some parts were boring. There would probably be 5 minutes of just a CGI animated ship being tossed about in a CGI animated ocean. Throughout the movie, I’d end up doodling. The movie never really caught my attention until you had the narrator (Odysseus) say something that basically was a transition from one scene to another. When you’re reading, you can’t doodle at the same time (audiobooks nowadays counter argue that, but that's not the point here) . You actually have to concentrate and be able to process what is going on , and with descriptive adjectives, I caught onto the reading. In the movie, you don't have random adjectives being shouted to describe how the waves felt, or how brutal the battle
Odysseus, during his long journey, exhibited many heroic qualities including bravery, strength, and determination. He was determined to return to his family after hs journey, and he bravely fought to stay alive during the cyclope situation, as well as other situations, and showed strength by being able to battle the cyclopes in self-defense. However, Odysseus was also obnoxiously arrogant about his victory and was actually very selfish throughout his entire story; he almost did not leave his town to help with the war because he did not want to leave to protect his family. Although Odysseus exemplified heroic qualities, this does not make him a true hero.
are very similar, but the movie portrays the book in a unique, interesting way. The movie has most of the characters the book has, but some of the characters do their part in a different way in the movie, that is what makes this new way of the book intreging. For example, the god of the sea, Poseiden is associated with water, the twist the movie puts on this character in the movie is instead of using water the Poseiden character, the sheriff, is associated with fire. These characters display irony because water and fire are opposites, which makes the movie have their own twist on the book. The Odyssey in a certain order. For the movie to be unique, it has the events in a different order. When readers read The Odyssey one character that appears in the middle of the piece is Teiresius. What makes the movie different from the novel is that the character Teiresius shows up closer to the beginning. Another example that makes the two pieces different from one another is the crew they travel along with. Odysseus’ crew actually all die off, but Pete and Delmar never die and stick by Everett for the whole movie.
The Odyssey is an epic home it was written by homer in the classical Greek. The story is about the main character Odysseus a Trojan war hero and his journey to return home to Ithaca conflict and obstacles are throughout the story and affect different characters many of the characters experience some form of reciprocity by the end of the epic and get what they
Odysseus confirms his role as a hero because he puts thought into all of his choices, he is quick-witted, and he frees himself of excessive self pride. From sacrificing six of his own men to surrendering his self pride to the gods, Odysseus accepts the noble title and proves himself deserving of being a hero. He took on a journey in which he grew into himself and rid himself of the one thing that held him back all along; his hubris. At the end of the journey, Odysseus went from being a selfish, cocky leader to being a selfless, modest hero.
In perspective one the dilemma is how versatile of a hero Odysseus really is. "In the Odyssey, we learn that Odysseus won the childhood scar that marks his thigh when, as a boy, he killed a ravaging boar" (Od. 19.392–468). This quote shows how bravery was shown at his younger age. It also is a very strong reason to believe that Odysseus will become a hero. Later in his life Odysseus was known for his way with words. "Though tempted by death during his years of wandering consistently tries to choose restraint and endurance" (Od. 10.49–55). This quote shows how mentally strong he was. In other tales of heroes there is many things that cause them to lose hope but they eventually gain it back. In the tale of Odysseus there is never a real point that Odysseus was mentally broke other then when he sees his mother in the land of the dead. After this part in the
Odysseus has all the qualities made to be a true hero. Not only did Odysseus fight on behalf of the Greeks in Troy (Trojan War), but everything he went through he learned a valuable lesson at the end; Odysseus endured so much during his journey going back to Ithaca but he never gave up on any of his principles. He also had good escape strategies, and he risked his life to save others. Imagine you being on the same journey Odysseus went through, do you honestly believe you would have survived? He made some minor mistakes along the way but nobody’s perfect. That’s why Odysseus is a hero because, he’s strong, and intelligent and was able to get out of sticky situations.
Odysseus is not a hero because, he is foolish, lacks faithfulness and is consumed by his Hubris and selfishness. Although he may be considered a war hero, Odysseus is not a hero in other respects. This is so because he is self-centered which is clear because he doesn't value other people's lives. He also is foolish risking the lives of his crew members for unnecessary reasons. He also outright disrespects the Gods at more than one point in the epic. As well, he lacks the loyalty of a true hero as shown by his affairs with other women even though his wife remained faithful. A hero is someone who does something for other people out of the goodness of his heart, Odysseus clearly is not this.
Odysseus is a selfish and over prided man whose self-centered and egotistic decisions get him in trouble and gets him a bad name with the Gods. . Odysseus is not a hero because, he is foolish, lacks faithfulness and is consumed by his hubris and selfishness. Odysseus may be known as the first "Modern hero" but in my mind he is a fake. He shows no heroic qualities in his adventures and only survives by luck and good-will. He only starts to pray because he is in trouble, if it weren't for that he would have never even acknowledged the Gods part in his journey home.
In conclusion, Odysseus deserves the title of a hero because he shows bravery, displays a change in character, and has the Gods supporting him throughout his journey home. Odysseus has the courage to overcome physical, emotional, and intellectual challenges. While Odysseus he is on the hero’s journey, he vastly improves his character. He changes from arrogant to humble, and learns leadership qualities, and most importantly, his place in the world. Odysseus has the revelation that the gods are above him, and are in control. Because he realizes the supremacy of the gods, his reward is assistance from the gods themselves. Odysseus is not a perfect man, and is flawed, just like every other human. However, heroes are not gods.
Odysseus is one of the very many prominent characters in Homer’s Epic poems, The Illiad, and The Odyssey. Odysseus has been famed one of the more relatable characters from Homer’s writing, as well as one of the Greatest Greek Mythology Heroes. Homer’s Epic poems highlight many periods of shame and honor for Odysseus. The character analysis of Odysseus through the poem’s timeline shows vast developments and heroic features appear to take form in him. The Illiad portrayed Odysseus as more of a secondary figure behind Agamemnon and Achilles. In contrast, The Odyssey portrayed Odysseus as a hero in the form of an average human.
Overall, Odysseus is a hero because Odysseus is a clever and intelligent man, he is a courageous soldier and leader, and he is loyal to his crew. He never gives up even though it seems like nothing will go right. Odysseus fights against difficult odds and takes unimaginable risks, but stays loyal to his crew one hundred percent of the way. Odysseus is not only a model hero, but he is an epic
Odysseus portrays himself as anything but a hero throughout Homer’s The Odyssey. Odysseus goes through his life believing he is the best. He has no regard for anyone’s feelings but his own, and he believes nothing and no one can harm him, not even the gods. Odysseus feels he is always the leader and no one can tell him otherwise. Odysseus should not be considered a hero because he portrays himself as a selfish man that failed his crew, and is controlled by his hubris.
Odysseus is not a hero based on the standards of merciful, selfless, and gentle. His actions against Polyphemus, the Suitors, and his men truly show that he is in fact the opposite of a hero. The actions he takes to return home safely and to get back his throne are very cruel and show signs that he lacks the nobility of being called a hero, or a king, or a warrior. He has shown that he powerful, destructive, and ruthless and these are qualities that a hero must not have. Odysseus, the mighty King of Ithaca is not a hero because he is not selfless, gentle, or merciful.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus's longing for his home and family is what drives the story. That is his one goal in the entire book, and that really states something about his character. In Book 5 we are first introduced to the character Odysseus. The strange thing is that he is weeping to himself when we first meet him. He is weeping because he pines for his family and home as stated in lines 327 and 328, 'Yet it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home.'; As he plainly states, Odysseus greatly misses his home, and his tears show us just how much he misses it. In the duration of the story Odysseus has to make several sacrifices in order to get to the home he longs for so much. In Book 12, Circe foresees that Odysseus will have to let some of his men die. 'The Ithacans set off. But Odysseus never reveals to them Circe's last prophecy – that he will be the only survivor…'; This shows how much he's willing to do and...
...-evaluation and corrected himself by turning his life around so that he could be fully aware of what it means to be a hero. Even though he has different traits from different heroic people he still succeeded in proving himself, like all heroes do. Now he truly understands his place in the world, his purpose, and what he must do in the future as the main hero of his household. Journeys like Odysseus’s would influence people to think about a hero in a complete opposite way than stories about pure-hearted knights in shining armor because it shows a person’s mistakes and how he handles or copes with them while maturing overtime. Even though different traits can describe who is or who is not a hero Odysseus is beyond doubt a well-developed hero.
