Sugar Glider Profile By: Kayla Dean I will be discussing the life, biology, evolution, and domestication of a sugar glider. Sugar gliders are an invasive species of marsupials native to Australia. Some of the most interesting about sugar gliders are their reproductive system and ability to glide. I will also discuss their diet and natural environment and how it differentiates with the environment in the United States, where they are becoming rapidly domesticated, and unlike several exotic animals, they are highly bred in captivity. Although sugar glider is their common name for their sweet tooth; their scientific name is Petaurus Breviceps, which stands for, rope dancer with a short head. Their natural environment is the forest biome in Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, and Tasmania, but are becoming a popular exotic household pet in the United States. …show more content…
Sugar gliders cohabitate in old trees to build their nest and rarely touch the ground as they are common prey to several animals such as; snakes, cats, quolls, kookaburras, goannas, owls, birds, foxes, and rats. Most of their predators are native to Australia. In a sense, their species is being protected by becoming domesticated. Wild sugar gliders' natural breeding season is from June through November; while in captivity they breed readily.
Sugar gliders are marsupials. Females sugar gliders cycle every 29 days and have one to two litters a year of up to two joeys per litter. While in captivity, they have up to four litters per year. Female sugar gliders can start mating as early as eight months old, while the males take 14 months to mature. The pubescent cycle of a joey starts as a fetus for 16 days, after that they move to the mother's pouch and stay there until they are four old. Sugar gliders can live up to 14 years old in captivity, unfortunately, in the wild they only survive nine years, if lucky. When mature, a sugar glider's body length is about five inches long with a tail that over doubles in size, making the total length about 11 inches and weighs about 80 to 160 grams which is about two to four ounces with the females being slightly smaller than the males. Sugar gliders are polygamous. The eldest males in the group are responsible for the protection of their two acre territory and parenting the young joeys, similar to
lions. Sugar gliders have multiple glands on their heads, chest, and reproductive parts, which are used for several things. Scent glands are used for communication while paracloacol glands are used when they are scared. The dominant male marks all members of the group and territory with his scent by urinating on them. Sugar gliders' tail is similar to the trunk of an elephant. They use their tail and opposable fingers and toes grab things such as food and leaves for their nest. Their tails also help while gliding because they act like a rudder in flight. They also possess large eyes which are helpful for seeing at night as they are nocturnal. Sugar gliders are commonly mistaken for flying squirrels. They both look very similar; they come for the same order but are of different classes. Sugar gliders belong to the Marsupialia diprotodontia, while flying squirrels belong to Eutheria Rodentia. Their closest relatives in the diprotodontia order are kangaroos, wallabies, possums, koalas, wombats. Similar to bears that hibernate during the winter, sugar gliders do the same but only for a few hours which is called torpor. Sugar gliders should be kept in at least a pair or more since they are social animals, if raised alone they are more likely to develop depression and could die from loneliness. Due to their social nature, they chatter for attention from their owner. Their easy nature and cleanliness make them a favorable pet with a diet that is easy to come by and relatively cheap. Domesticated sugar glider live in large bird cages so they will have enough room to glide. They should be purchased at a young age to create a close relationship between owner and joey. If bonding and interaction doesn't occur, the sugar glider may become hostile towards their owner. A major threat to sugar gliders is loss of habitat caused by deforestation. Even with the loss of deforestation, sugar gliders' population is still large but if deforestation increases, these wonderful species may become extinct.
This invasive species originates from Southeast Asia. This mosquito has made its way to Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North and South America as an invasive species. The Asian Tiger Mosquito was introduced into the United States accidentally from tires imported from Asia. The islands of Torres Straight have numerous reports of this mosquito also. This invasive species was introduced into the United States, probably Houston, Texas, from Japan in 1985. The constant trade of used tires throughout the U.S. allowed the Asian Tiger Mosquito to disperse across America.
Their offspring is one. The lifespan of the ring-tailed lemur is 20 years. They have a
Habitat: Partially or completely open country, around mountains, hills, and cliffs. They use many different habitats ranging from arctic to desert, some include tundra, shrub lands, grasslands, coniferous forest, farmland and rivers or streams. They can be found in Mexico, North America, Alaska, and sometimes Asia, northern Africa, and Europe. They nest in high places such as cliffs, trees, or human structures. They build huge nests that they may return to for several breeding years.
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. Earth, an endless source of wonder and beauty, produced the Great Barrier Reef. Hustling and bustling, the Reef thrives like a busy city, teeming with life. Sheltering thousands, corals, maintain the well-being of the Reef; however, the world threatens its nature and delicacy. Populations growing and technological advances increasing, the world becomes more and more disconnected with the natural world, posing an alarming risk for the planet we live on. Although many organizations try to keep the oceans clean, because of human interference and unnatural occurrences, the Great Barrier Reef needs scientific help to adapt corals to new conditions for means of survival, putting pressure on the Australian government to save their ocean environment.
Manatees are loved by many Floridians. Manatees are known as one of the state’s natural wonders. They were once marked as one of the endangered mammals in Florida. The federal government considers a species endangered when it is at risk of extinction. Therefore, the federal government is downlisting manatees from “endangered” to “threatened.” The manatees are now downgraded from endangered to just threatened, the level of protection for the manatees are also reducing. Since the federal government has spoken out that manatees are no longer endangered, does it decrease the risk of manatees being extinct?
Should Pit Bulls be banned? Many people will argue that the pit bull breed should be banned due to its vicious and unpredictable nature. There is a belief that they are inherently evil creatures and that they have a genetic predisposition to be destructive killing machines. In many states and cities, this has brought about breed specific legislation. Breed specific legislation bans or regulates the ownership of specific breeds of dogs, which almost always includes pit bulls.
There are many different ways to show off your equines skill and ability and competitions are one of them. For years humans have been entering their equines in competitions to show off their grace, beauty, and strength. There's an abundance of competitions to show off your equestrian and each require a different type of training, horse, and skills. Three of the more popular competitions are rodeos, dressage, and show jumping. These competitons can include either speed, agility, skill, or even all three at one time!
Sugar is one of the most consumed commodities in the world today, and the profits of it are significant. According to Larry Schwartz (2014) “Americans consume 130 pounds of sugar every year” (Schwartz, 2014). We must be acknowledged about how it all started, to appreciate how people lived and how they struggled to provide such a commodity. Sugar was a profitable commodity in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The cultivation of sugarcane expanded to the United States of America, which brought enslaves from Africa to work on the plantation of sugar during the 17th century. Sugar was known as the white gold for its income, which helped the U.S. to achieve independence from Great Britain. Although sugar has the worst history, it is widely used for nutritional, medical and industrial productions, and sugar manufacturing led to an industrial development and economic growth.

“No bees, no honey; no work, no money.” Bees are becoming an endangered species due to colony collapse disorder, a colony no longer existing due to a combination of deadly factors. Bees are very important in our lives from making food cheaper to making honey-added in many medicines, foods, and other products. There are a few steps we can take in order to save our honeybees.

All parents raise their children differently, using various methods they probably learned from their own parents. Parents like Amy Chua raise their children with tough love, discipline, and a multitude of rules, coining the name "tiger mom." Chua views her parenting technique as supreme, but it is highly controversial to the public and it brings up many questions of the effect it will have on her children 's ' future. In Chua 's "Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior," she emphasizes that Western parenting is not strict enough which cause children to grow up being disrespectful and less achieving than children brought up by tiger moms. I believe that tiger parenting is damaging towards the child and that the Western style of parenting is
Are drones a good machine to use in warfare? Drones are unpiloted armed machines, controlled by experts (usually soldiers) thousands of miles away. While people might believe that the use of drone in war will benefit the United States and other countries, they are actually more harmful to people, both mentally and physically. By defining the necessity of people the recognize the harms of drones in people, by refuting counter arguments of those who believe the use of drones is beneficial, and by presenting information and arguments from documents, it will be obvious from the information presented that drones are not the right way to go, and they will be harmful instead of beneficial for people.
