The topic of race has been a controversial discussion for decades. Many individuals are not educated enough on the topic of race/ethnicity which then causes tension and arguments with the people who may disagree with what one has to say. I can easily say in the year of 2015, Twitter was almost a war zone when it came to race. Almost anything anyone said about the topic of race would cause an argument or fight. While African Americans are not the only ones being discriminated against, many can agree that most of the prejudice regarding race is directed towards them. Race is “a group whose inherited physical characteristics distinguish it from other groups” while ethnicity is “having distinctive cultural characteristics” (Henslin, 2011). While I am an African American with parents born in Ethiopia, I have a lot of friends of different races with various cultural backgrounds. After interviewing one on my white friends about race, I was very shocked and interested in the answers she provided. I can honestly say it was difficult for me to find a person of a different race to interview. Not because I don't know any, but because I tend to surround myself around people of the same race as me. I’m also not the type of person to go up to a random individual and ask them if I can interview them. After searching around for a bit, I remembered a friend I had at school. I simply approached her and asked her if I could ask her a series of questions. Luckily, she was very open to the idea and gave me great feedback. The first question I asked her was whether she was an American of if she came from a different country. Because we are only human, our history is a crazy bumbling mess “filled with ironies and unintended consequences, paths not taken and opportunities missed” (Cottrol, 2013). Historically white people have oppressed people of color from the moment we first ran into them during European exploration. It was not until a few hundred years later that African Americans were able to have a common enemy in The Jim Crow Legislation of the American South. This is the first time we see large masses of people of color coming together to fight for their rights (Cottrol, 2013). A direct effect of this fight was Affirmative Action, legislation that allowed some equality in education and the work place. This scared white people because it made the job market more competitive. A large problem in America has always been racial issues and still continues to be prevalent in our society today. The United States likes to boast its reputation as a “melting-pot” as many cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are mixed together, yet the country still continues to isolate individuals based on race. In the constitution, it says that everyone is supposed to have equal rights and liberties, yet after over 200 years, many minorities still struggle to obtain the same respect and equality that their white counterparts have always have. Prejudice can be defined as the judgement of a group or an individual based mainly on group association. Prejudice is not necessarily negative. Ethnocentrism is an example of positive prejudice towards one’s in-group. Discrimination can be defined as the negative or positive behaviours towards individuals based on their group association. Discrimination may be obvious or subtle, either way both can be damaging. Although discrimination and prejudice often go hand in hand, there is a difference between the two. Prejudice is just the negative or positive view of others, whereas discrimination is putting prejudice into action. An example of prejudice would be that of ordinary racist remarks whilst an example of discrimination would be the execution of the caste system in India. This question assumes that prejudice is common in this world, and that this problem needs to be solved.
