Abortion Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. It is one of the most debated topics in the United States. The question about abortion has always been is it ethical to have an abortion. If you answer yes to that question, then you stand on the pro-choice side. If you answer no to that question, you stand on the pro-life side. There are arguments for both sides and both sides make very good points. If you support pro-choice, then you believe women have absolute rights over their own bodies and lives. Pro-choice also believes human life does not have value until birth. The fetus has no significant moral value. Women ought to be allowed to have an abortion, regardless of the reason, if she requests it. Women, like men, should have absolute rights over their own bodies, including procreative rights. The fetus has full moral status. Pro-life individuals often believe that to allow abortion is to also condone infanticide and the rights of the fetus and newborn are paramount to the rights of any others. The conceptus is innocent and cannot defend itself from being killed. Some feel that abortion is more likely to set in motion the domino effect than any other type of act because it is not as visible or blatant as the murdering of already born children or adults. Abortion procedures are physically and psychologically dangerous to the mother’s well-being, life, and future procreativity. Pro-life argues that advances in medicine have made most pregnancies fairly safe today. They also argue that the mother can give the child up for adoption if she truly does not want the child.
