My fellow Westport citizens, Martin O’Malley announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential elections on May 30th. O’Malley was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and since then has held many government jobs; his most recent being: governor of Maryland. He has fought for many issues, such as gun control; which is a widely supported topic in Connecticut. He created a proposal for a ban on assault weapons and a requirement for gun owners to license their weapons. He is dedicated to his work and demonstrates his ability to act on certain ideas, such as gun control. My fellow Westport citizens, Martin O’Malley is the prime presidential candidate because he is an active and qualified democratic leader and his vision for the future will benefit America. …show more content…
He has had several prior roles in governing a community of individuals. In his first year out of college, O’Malley accepted the job to be Barbara Mikulski’s state field director for her campaign as a Senator. Then O’Malley served on the Baltimore City Council for eight years. Shortly after, he became the mayor of Baltimore. He served as the mayor for seven years until he became the democratic governor of Maryland. He served two terms as governor. These experiences not only demonstrate that he is qualified for a job where he has to lead a community but he is desired for these jobs. According to Maryland’s polling records, O’Malley won the re-election for governor in 2010 with 56.2% of the votes (Maryland.gov). In 1999, when O’Malley ran for mayor of Baltimore, he received 87,607 votes in his favor while his republican competitor received 9,207 (Maryland.gov). These statistics reveal that O’Malley is desired for leadership roles within communities and has had the experience necessary to guide the United States as
First, I will discuss his background, which started when he was born on April 16, 1931 in McCracken County Kentucky. His parents were Elvie B. and Eva Heady Carroll. His father was a farmer and a tractor implement salesman, he also owned a garage. In 1937, the family moved to Heath Kentucky he attended Heath high school and was later elected student body president. After graduating high school Senator Carroll attended Paducah Junior College. In 1951, he and his girlfriend Charlann Harting were married and started their family of what would eventually be four children. One year later he graduated from Paducah Junior College with an associate of arts degree.
Daley held several elected posts before becoming mayor. He was state representative from 1936 to 1938, state senator from 1939 to 1946, county deputy controller from 1946 to 1949, and county clerk from 1950 to 1955. He also served as state revenue director, an appointed position, under Governor Adlai Stevenson. In these positions, Daley gained a keen understanding of government and a mastery of budgets and revenue sources.
This book is telling a story about two African American boys (Wes A and Wes P) who have the same name and grew up at same community, but they have a very different life. The author, Wes A, begins his life in a tough Baltimore neighborhood and end up as a Rhodes Scholar, Wall Streeter, and a white house fellow; The other Wes Moore begins at the same place in Baltimore , but ends up in prison for the rest of his life. Then why do they have the same experience, but still have a totally different life? I will agree here that environment (family environment, school education environment and society environment) is one of the biggest reasons for their different.
While reading “ Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, many opinions can be formed of Chris McCandless. One, in particular, was the author's opinion which he blatantly stated on page 85. He didn't think that Chris was some reckless foolish insane idiot. He believed that competent otherwise he wouldn't have lasted so long. I agree with Krakauer, things Chris did on this journey did not show signs of some careless person. Chris was just an adventurer looking to get away from the expectations society had of him to see the world for what it really was.
Five years later, Barry would be successful in obtaining a fourth term. Barry's defeat of his Republican opponent, Carol Schwartz, a Jewish woman was a remarkable statement of Barry's uncanny connection with the majority of the District electorate, in the face of scandal and undisputable evidence of drug use. In fact, many regard Barry's return to the District Mayor's office as a strong slap in the face to the establishment of Congressional intervention, Federal Control Boards and the such. Barry's re-election was a result of political savvy voter registration program as well as his uncanny connection with the majority of those that lived in predominantly black and Democratic city. He connected, or at least in a public relations sense, connected with the people, he capitalized on the failures of his predecessor Sharon Pratt Kelly, talked about issues people wanted to hear about, and possessed a character trait about him that made it nearly impossible for some not to be drawn too.
A child of abuse and neglect, Chris McCandless awed the world with his inspiring trip across the nation to find himself in Alaska. Leaving his well off life and his problematic family behind to be true to his ideas of life. His life impacted the people who knew him well and the strangers that drove him to his haven. When the story of this young man hitch hiking across the country broke ground, it made many people question if this boy was just crazy or did he really have a true understanding on the day to day live we were living and where we were going wrong. Although some critics have conceived the idea that Chris McCandless was just a crazed mad man with schizophrenia and the unachievable idea of true happiness. Many believe he was a new
Chris McCandless took a gamble with his life and as a result, he lost it. McCandless was a very adventurous, free spirited, young man that chose to do anything and everything he set his mind to. He was born into a family that he did not quite fit in with, it was a family of money with no emotions for love other than that for money of course. Due to his personal issues and the rebellion of his youth McCandless decided to go on an adventure traveling to Alaska and ultimately sacrificing his life from his risk taking tendencies. Although it may be true that McCandless could potentially suffer from a type of mental illness, people should consider that he is completely sane because he ultimately just wanted to travel and find himself while doing

John Forbes Kerry is the candidate I would chose in the up in coming election. Some of the issues that would decide my vote are environment, the economy, homeland security, social issues, and Iraq. I would also vote for John Kerry because he has done good things for Massachusetts and I know he will do good things for this country. My last reason for voting for John Kerry is because he will bring our troops home safely. On November 2, 2004 I would vote for John Kerry.
The United States of America’s 40th president, Ronald Wilson Reagan served as our country’s leader from 1981 to 1989. Ronald Reagan was a very strong advocate for freedom. Many and most of his speeches were related to freedom or the concept of freedom was thrown in and mentioned in the speeches. A large part of Reagan’s campaign was freedom. His beliefs on this matter did not all come from morals, Ronald Reagan’s perception of freedom came from his lifestyle of/in Christianity.
Obama decides to become a community organizer with a promise of redemption. While Obama is trying his best to succeed as a community organizer Marty realizes he is only focusing on work. Marty noticed he didn’t have any friends and suggests making a life outside work. “Marty suggested that I take more time off, build a life for myself away from the job. His concerns were professional, he explained: Without some personal support outside the work, an organizer lost perspective and could quickly burn out.” (Obama 188). Obama realized that Marty was correct the people Obama met in his job were generally older than him, and they already had an outside life. He also realized that during his free time he was mostly alone with a book. Obama doesn’t regard Marty’s advice, because the friendship between him and the leadership was starting to grow stronger. After work he would go out with them and have a good time. “It was during such times, when familiarity or weariness dissolved the lines between organizer and leader, that I began to understand what Marty had meant when he insisted that I
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, is one of the best candidates for this years 2016 presidential election. He is the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He has demonstrated his passion towards an equal and stabilized country. Sanders is a man who believes in a country that is equal and all voices should be heard. Socioeconomic issues are to be heard of by all people because these issues are what make the people and the country. His propositions to a better socioeconomic country will better the relationships we have with one another. Voting for Bernie Sanders, means voting for a country that will be equal to all the people living here. A country deserves to be united by all the people living here regardless of race. We are all human, we all deserve
His main piece of legislation that he sponsored was a bill that appropriates funds to build a memorial to commemorate those who have served in the Navy from his district. This is a thoughtful piece of legislation, as his district is home to the Naval Station Great Lakes, which hosts the United States Navy only boot camp. This facility trains 38,000 recruits each year, and 5% of the district has served in the military. He also voted in favor of H.R. 20, The Veterans Housing Act, which afforded housing to veterans once they return from serving our country in the military. This bill is key to allow veterans to reintegrate themselves into everyday life, without having to worry about finding housing when they return from fighting overseas.
Politics is one of the most debated topics in the country today. With the wide variety of values present in America, it is bound to be a difficult topic to discuss. I’ve grown up in a family of democrats with religiously republican grandparents. Considering myself an Independent leaning democratic, I can usually calmly talk politics with my family. This year’s election has made any conversation surrounding politics toxic to my family and creates a large argument of one side or the other and no in between.
