Jessica Bateman has been one of our longest standing members. She has been an active WWFH partner since 2010 and a co-chair in 2012. When asked what has kept her committed to WWFH for so long, she replied, "I feel that there is a tremendous amount of value in coalition work. Particularly, the broad scope of partners who comprise WWFH including patients, physicians, and research institutions results in impactful advocacy campaigns that promote access to life-saving medical treatments." In 2016, Jessica joined the American Urological Association (AUA) to launch their Patient and Research Advocacy Department. As director of this department, Jessica's primary role is to ensure that the patient voice is incorporated into the AUA's legislative
“Honoring our heritage. Building our culture.” What can you picture in your head while reading this? Do feel honored? Maybe special? Probably phenomenal? Well, this year's Hispanic Heritage month’s theme has brought to us a meaningful, and inspiring perspective on how Latinos are becoming more honored. Not only honored by their country, and other Spanish countries, but also being honored by the United States. Hispanics have impacted our nation through their solid responsibility to family, confidence, and diligent work. They have put in the effort and time to represent their Latino/a background. They have improved and formed our national character by looking back at what their ancestors would do. These hispanics deserve the right to be honored
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
The tragedies Ruth Ginsburg experienced throughout her upbringing had a lasting contribution to her life today. In 1933, she was born to Russian-Jewish immigrants amidst the Great Depression. In the hardships of the Great Depression, she lost both her older sister and mother as a child. This time was one of great difficulty for Ginsburg; however, she withstood this adversity and gained invaluable life lessons giving her the opportunity to attain unprecedented levels of success. After coping with her losses, she left to attend Harvard Law School and later Columbia Law School, two world-renowned schools of law. At this period in history, however, both men who dominated this field and who ran the schools discriminated Ginsburg based on her gender (“Ruth Bader Ginsburg”). At one point during the school day, the Dean of Harvard Law approached her and said, “How do you justify taking a spot from a qualified man?” (Galanes). Despite this prejudice, Ginsburg continued to excel in her schooling where she later graduated as top of her class at Columbia (“Ruth Bader Ginsburg”).
Newbergh, C. (2005, 11/2005). The Robert Wood Foundation’s Commitment to Nursing. To Improve Health and Health Care, VIII, 1-16.
I work in this field trying to understand more and more the underlying problems and not superficial situations. My role a few years ago as Manager in Nursing was to seek to overcome the conflicts generated in patient care or the administration of resources and to be able to lead a group of people with different points of view over the same issue. My position must be a policymaker. My commitment is to be a creator and driver of sustainable health policies and not only idealised ideas or projects.
All that the ANNA sets out to accomplish is in alignment with its mission statement, which reads “The American Nephrology Nurses ' Association (ANNA) promotes excellence in and appreciation of nephrology nursing so we can make a positive difference for people with kidney disease (ANNA,
“Feminist” has a negative connotation nowadays; we often times here people call feminists “feminazis,” “man haters,” or even just a “bitch.” Many people think that “feminism is anti- male” (Hooks). Many female celebrities stay hush about the issues surrounding females every day, but Lena Dunham is not one of them. Stemming from a family of artists, Lena became a writer, actress, producer, and director and was put in the spotlight. Instead of keeping hush about the world and Hollywood’s issues pertaining to the mistreatment of not only women, but those of different genders and other oppressed people as well. Lena Dunham shows her bold character and feminist visions by using her pedestal to speak out on social and political issues.
A vision of amplified foundations such as “the Raise Your Voice Campaign”, AARP , RWJF, Macy’s, and Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation have contributed towards the educational research programs by amplifying the nurses role as the educators leaders and co-existence roots of the Health Care System. (Buerhaus, 2008). An additional partner initiator was the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing's Future (J&J Campaign) that “ focused on promoting the nursing profession, averting future projected shortages of RNs, raising funds for educating students and supporting faculty, and raising public awareness of the value and importance of nurses”(Buerhaus, 2008).
Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in November 12, 1815, in Johnstown, New York. Her parents were Margaret Livingston and Daniel Cady, who were important citizens. Daniel Cady, in particular, was notable for being a lawyer, state assemblyman, and congressman, who supported his daughter’s education. Unlike many women of her time, she went to primary school at the Johnstown Academy and attended Emma Willard’s Troy Female Seminary, an all girl’s boarding school that taught grades 9-12. In addition, she was taught Greek by a minister and received an informal legal education from her father and the young men who were learning under him. Although she was raised a strict Presbyterian in a conservative household, she had other influences in her family that were more radical. Her cousin, Gerri Smith, was a philanthropist,
This author met with a patient named JB to assess her current health status as well as her needs to ensure her health and well being or as she put it to “make sure she is her in the future for her children”. JB was an engaging and honest patient that had the eagerness and desire to improve her curren...
Nurses are at the forefront of the healthcare system and therefore must actively engage in policies that impact the healthcare system. DNP graduates can initiate the process of change by pointing out potential problems within the healthcare delivery system and spearheading legislation through lobbyists and nursing organizations. Nurses should be the middle-man between patients and policy makers. Patient advocacy has been part of nursing for a long time. Zaccagnini and White (2014) highlighted how Florence Nightingale advocated for the British soldiers’ poor living conditions during the Crimean war once she recognized the connection between policy makers and public health. Local, national and global nursing organizations provide ways for nurses to voice issues and concerns that affect public health welfare. In the United States of America, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Council of State Board of Nursing(NCSBN) can be used as a platform to raise awareness and concerns for public health and
Given the scenario, Melissa has two relevant beliefs concerning the whereabouts of her keys. The first belief is that her keys are in her house. This belief is true because she spent time searching just her house. If Melissa did not believe her keys were in her house, she would not have wasted time looking there. However, according to the Cartesian standard of justification, Melissa’s belief is not justified. The Cartesian standard of justification employs indubitability to determine whether the belief can be doubted. If the belief is indubitable, a foundation can be built with that belief and built upon with reason (Descartes, First Mediation). Melissa’s belief can be doubted because the reason behind knowledge can be deceiving (Descartes,
In 1977 Irene Pepperberg, a recent graduate of Harvard University, did something very bold. At a time when animals still were considered automatons, she set out to find what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. She brought a one-year-old African gray parrot she named Alex into her lab to teach him to reproduce the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”
With everybody speaking of our racial system as “unconstitutional” and “cruel”, it may be hard to continue our crusade against integration, but we must persevere. We must fight for our children, our homes, our jobs, and our future. They will take over. Just the other day, four young negroes took over the neighborhood malt shop. They sat and were ignored, yet they still sat. They refused to move, albeit silently, leaving paying members of our community hungry and inconvenienced. We must show them that this behavior, although peaceful, will not be tolerated.
“Lois Capps is worse than Satan.” This is an actual quote from my father, a fifty-four year old white, republican, male. Me being the closet liberal that I am, I did not ask him to elaborate for risk of upsetting the delicate balance that is life as a queer liberal woman in a household with a sexist, racist, republican father. This is an opinion I have heard before though, but with what I know of Lois Capps now, I can confidently say that she is definitely not worse that the devil. Lois Capps stands on the side of progress in America. She has progressive stances on issues like environmental protection, the LGBT community, and education. She believes in working to protect the environment and the animals that share the Earth with us. She wants
