Many people that are deaf use a device called a hearing aid. Hearing aids have been around since early times, and were not always effective like they are now. There has been a debate since the hearing aid was invented on if it is taking away from Deaf culture or helping the deaf. Many of the Deaf have very strong opinions on the topic and feel strongly on their side. Hearing aids have made vast improvements in people's lives throughout the years.
Hearing aids are small electronic devices that are worn behind the ear, it is used to makes sounds louder. Hearing aids are used so ones who have hearing loss are able to hear and communicate better and still do daily activities. Miller Reese Hutchison was the first to invent an electric hearing aid in 1898. Hutchinson had a friend that was deaf because of the Scarlett Fever. One day they were watching the steamboats past and he realized that she could not hear any sounds from the steamboat. Hutchinson studied hearing and did research for many years to create the device. After four years of research he created the first hearing aid known as the ¨Akouphone.¨ The hearing aid was originally big and bulky and has connected to many wires. The device had to be carried around and was not easily portable. The biggest complaint from first being introduced to 20 years ago was the squeal. When the hearing aid was not properly on or did not fit well there would be a squeal or whistle sound. It was hard for ones wearing the device to hear more sound without the whistle because the louder the hearing aid was turned up the louder the whistle noise. Now todayś hearing aids are fit to the person and there are no whistles
