Gary Goldstein our guest speaker openly shared his story with a class full of strangers, not knowing if the class full of young teenagers would care for what he was saying or if they were going to judge him. I'm sure that some of us did, but that was not what Goldstein was thinking about, he was thinking that he came here to inspire and enlighten a bunch 11th graders. Hoping to prevent what happened to him from us. Gary Goldstein was arrested on June 13, 1998, for robbing a dry cleaning store. What we may think and see as the end of the world was a blessing to Goldstein. He was an addict, he was addicted to alcohol, drugs, and gambling. The next six years of his life behind bars, Goldstein is going to use it as a pathway to redemption. As a kid, Goldstein suffered from low-self esteem which I think almost all of us can …show more content…
However, by listening to him, I learned no matter where we are in life we all could hit rock bottom in an instance. Goldstein was a well educated young man and he had a good job and look where he ended up, he spent six years in jail. When committing his crime, Goldstein lingered around the crime scene. Why was because he subconsciously wanted to get caught so he can receive the help that he wanted but could never manage to get. When he was arrested he pled guilty and received six years from the judge because he never had a good lawyer. The years behind bars, he spent working to get better. His road to recovery was not easy, he got high a couple times in jail, however, he soon cleaned up his act and got clean on the outside. He relapses a year after being out, then he officially got help at a rehab center. The rehabilitation is not what only keep Goldstein clean, but it’s talking to us, students and other addicts. In hope of reaching us and maybe even prevent or stop one of us from going down the wrong

Sherlock Holmes was not accountable for the demise or killing of Dr. Grimsby Roylott. The story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Dr. Roylott had intimidated Sherlock Holmes after his daughter, Helen Stoner, had gone to Holmes about a whistle she heard. Helen Stoner appointed Holmes and Watson to assist her from mysterious happenings. Sherlock Holmes could not have anticipated that Dr. Roylott was sitting in a chair in which the ventilator was right on top of the chair. Even though Dr. Roylott used to be a generous, polite man, he was now an ignoble and arrogant man.
...fortunately, whether the program wasn’t strong, or by his flaws, it did not work for him and he ended up back in the drug game. His biggest mentor in life was Tony, who initially tried to steer him clear, ended up being with him during his downfall.
A hero is someone who doesn’t give up and keeps on fighting for their goal. Jackie Robinson is a great hero and came over great challenges, but he achieved his goal. How Jackie Robinson embodies the human spirt is that he broke the color barrier, and the challenges he faced, and his life.
Throughout “Argument as Conversation,” Stuart Greene demonstrates the concept of supporting an argument through the use of varying conversations to encourage writers to research and support their own personal opinions. Greene begins by expressing that to take a stand on one argument it is necessary to extensive research on all aspects having to do with a topic. Greene also communicates that reading acts as one of the most important things a writer can do. While stating this Greene explains that the research conducted must contain counterarguments, context, and objections to the idea at hand. This research could be done in the form of a conversation. For example, listening to an argument and adding personal input, while receiving criticism
In this passage, the audience truly sees the meaning behind Herbert Kohl's message. His purpose for writing comes back to the fact that people interpret situations differently in every way. Kohl not only wanted to highlight the purpose behind wanting to learn something new but he also wanted readers to be aware that most time it does not come down to the inability of someone who doesn't want to learn but the real reason behind why they don't want to. People have different opinions on topics such as these but Kohl wanted to show that being able to want to stand up for your culture and the meanings behind it are rather important. Behind Kohl's purpose for writing, we see an insight into his past life relating to Wilfredo's. Kohl's reason for
A child of abuse and neglect, Chris McCandless awed the world with his inspiring trip across the nation to find himself in Alaska. Leaving his well off life and his problematic family behind to be true to his ideas of life. His life impacted the people who knew him well and the strangers that drove him to his haven. When the story of this young man hitch hiking across the country broke ground, it made many people question if this boy was just crazy or did he really have a true understanding on the day to day live we were living and where we were going wrong. Although some critics have conceived the idea that Chris McCandless was just a crazed mad man with schizophrenia and the unachievable idea of true happiness. Many believe he was a new
Once these individuals in rehab serve there sentence the majority of them, won’t look straight to the next opportunity to get high, but the next opportunity for a better future after being encouraged in rehab to accomplish something in life, compared to someone’s attitude coming out of prison. One story involved a man named Richard with his wife Marcia. She was an addict who was often jailed for it, but Anthony believed like many others that “addiction can be overcome with proper help. He believed that the solution was to get her into a mental hospital [and] get her whatever she needs – Xanax, morphine, to get her chemical imbalance right. Show her some respect. (114)” Give her some working skills, so once she gets out she is capable of being successful but instead she kept getting “kicked down the steps” by the criminal justice system. The jailing and torture of addicts is routine to people serving cases for drug related offenses, who are often not built to endure prison, let alone jail. “The Justice Department estimates that 216,000 people are raped in these prisons every year. (This is the number of rapes, not the number of rapes – that is much higher.) (109)” This is ultimately shows the simple fact that many people are not built to endure
All of Levi's experiences while he was in Auschwitz describe the dire need for human society to thrive off of each other like parasites within communities. The metaphor of the Nazis being parasitic pests to society and the Jews being their hosts capture this statement rather well. His details that he leaves us in his memoir carry on the stories and experiences of not only himself, but of all of the inocent men, women, and children who lost their lives during this horrific time in history. Levi also imposes that his experiences, as well as the experiences of others, will instill in his audience's minds through his usage of discreat language and graphic context which helped in creating accurate dipictions of his trials towards readers.
During the trial, you did not hear much from Andrew Goldstein’s family. His parents divorced when he was 8 years old and he had two brothers. During his trial the prosecution argued that Andrew Goldstein had an abusive childhood, that his mother was abused by his father, furthermore the prosecution tried to use these incidents as a connection to the fatal attack on Kendra Webdale. The defense replied that the family had given up on the mental health system.
Have you ever mused on your past and realized how much you've grown? It's fascinating how we change over time to become better, or worse. Tom Sawyer experienced the same growth, we as the readers are able to see and connect to Tom Sawyer as he grows.
John Brown was an abolitionist who fought for freedom of slaves in the nineteenth century leading up to the Civil War. He was remembered for his bravery and dedication while taking action through the raid at Harper’s Ferry and the Pottawatomie Massacre. John Brown was a freedom fighter, religious warrior and political zealot. Although his violent approach was seen as an act of terrorism his ultimate goal was the emancipation of slavery justified by the word of God.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James has been the cause of many debates about whether or not the ghosts are real, or if this is a case of a woman with psychological disturbances causing her to fabricate the ghosts. The story is told in the first person narrative by the governess and is told only through her thoughts and perceptions, which makes it difficult to be certain that anything she says or sees is reliable. It starts out to be a simple ghost story, but as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the governess has jumps to conclusions and makes wild assumptions without proof and that the supposed ghosts are products of her mental instability which was brought on by her love of her employer
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
