BROOKLYN, N.Y.--West Virginia University's basketball season came to an end on Friday night after a stunning 70-56 loss to 14th-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. What went wrong for the third-seeded Mountaineers? Everything. First, WVU lost at its own game. The Mountaineers turned the ball over 22 times that led to 29 points for the Lumberjacks. At times this season, WVU has been able to get away with turnovers, but the Mountaineers only faced seven turnovers. WVU turned the ball over on six straight possessions in the first half, which led to a drought over 10 minutes long spanning the two halves. "The main thing, we turned the ball over what 22, 23 times," junior guard Tarik Phillip said. "Coach always said …show more content…
"They just wanted it more. We were late on rotations. They wanted every 50-50 ball, and they just wanted it more. The Mountaineers had the potential to make a run to the Final Four, but the Lumberjacks outplayed WVU. "That team play better," senior forward Jonathan Holton said. "We turned the ball over and we had blew an opportunity. We had a chance to do something special, but it happens. To tell you the truth, I just want to go home so I can cry it all out. But it's cool. You can't change nothing. That team deserves all it did and what it had went through. They played hard and they outplayed us today and they deserve everything." "Brad's (Underwood) got a great group, Huggins said. "He's got five seniors guys, I think and guys that have been with him for three years. They run their stuff really well, and they've seen a lot of things, and they've made great adjustments. They kind of kept the ball out of areas where we wanted to get the ball. We helped. Don't get me wrong, we helped, and we made some horrible decisions. But I think that's what happens. I think, when you can keep a group together like that, you know. I think the good thing about being at a mid-major is you're not losing guys every
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
“Everybody wants this thing to be successful, and they have just been waiting for something to happen for such a long time,” Hoyt said. “For a long time Columbia basketball was more of an afterthought. Now, it 's more like, I can 't wait for winter we can go watch some games. It 's going to be like that this year with the guys we are bringing in.”
There have been many historical moments with the University of Dayton Flyers Men’s Basketball team, but Mark Weaver recalls of the one that meant most to him. It took place on March 24, 1967, in Louisville’s Freedom Hall for the Final Four of the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) tournament against the highly favored North Carolina Tar Heels (Collett 228). This was the third straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Flyers, but their first ever Final Four (Collett 228). It turned out that the Flyers smashed North Carolina, seventy-six to sixty-two. Don May hit a record thirteen straight field goals and scored thirty-four points (Collett 228). Mark Weaver, a lifetime fan said, “I remember that game like it was yesterday, it almost brings tears to my eyes. I have never seen UD party like we did the night of that game. I have been following Dayton basketball since the mid-1960s and I have yet to witness the team getting a greater win than the one over the Tar Heels.”

The best recruiting class in NCAA history came in and changed the game. Before they came to college, players still wore short shorts and the only people caught wearing black socks on a basketball court were 60-year olds trying to be young again. They changed the game with their great basketball skills, and their swagger. The road to greatness wasn't very easy for some though; they lived a tough life, and used that as motivation to drive them to greatness. They are Michigan's Fab Five.
The adage of the adage. Normally a college basketball fan would love a good upset like those, but statistics show that since 1990 only seven fifteen seeds have beaten a two seed and three of them have happened since the age change in the NBA draft back in 2005. 2014 pg. 78 pg.... ... middle of paper ...
...a hook shot, cut the deficit to four points with three minutes remaining and Pryor's free throw chopped it to 48-45.
The first day we got there we had started off so wrong by arguing. We weren’t doing well and we argued most of the time. Us as a team, we honestly made ourselves look bad in front of the coordinators and other teams that were watching us. The coaches had given us a real big pep talking about sticking together as a team to make us better. Although we didn’t think we needed it, it actually
Before we started, we had a meeting with the Coach and he said to us, "This is what we have been working for all year, so now let us show them what we are about."
...the last five minutes. We dribbled the ball down to the end of the field, faked out the defense and chipped a shot.
The facts that Andre and Jake were saying had a successful year was that, we won are games, the players we had on the teams, the workout we did, and the opponents we played. But I think we did better this year than we did last year. Because of the players we had on our team and because of how young they were and what they were capable of doing.
We didn 't play the way we wanted. Even though we struggled, we still did some things right. If we just focus on the things we did well like; boxing out, playing tough defense, and rebounding, we can work around those things and build up the things that needed to be worked on. I know that we can step up and play at a higher level. We just have to make some fundamental changes and work on some things in practice and I think that it will help in our next game. We can hold on to this loss for the night but when you come to practice tomorrow we aren 't going to hang on to this feeling we need to shake it off and start to prepare for our next game. We just need to use this game as an opportunity to see what we need to work on and build off of that. Once we improve what we need to, I think we can get to the level of success we want.”
The Cavaliers stayed true to their Jekyll and Hyde performance during Tuesday's Game 2 loss to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. Another new starting
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
Down two with six seconds to go fatigue had taken it tolls on the players. With little energy left; over time was not an option. I knew I had to go for the win. I walk on the floor confident of my ability that was until the whistle blew quickly turning my confident to butterflies. As I fought to get open I quickly saw the ball coming my way. As I rose for a jump shot time itself began to stay still. An in flesh everything became silent. As I watch the ball leave my hand I envisioned greatness; sure the ball was on its way in I started to celebrate that was until I hear the announcer say my teammate tip in miss shot to win us the game. Mix with emotion I celebrate with my teammate. “Ok guys, we have 24 hours until tip off. Get some rest because this is going to be the biggest game of your life. Let’s bring this championship back to Barton College. Go Bulldogs and Goodnight!” Why few players stay in the lobby to hang out I took it talk upon to work on my game and reflect on the semifinal game that just took place. At basketball games you will notice how there are all sorts of fans attending the game.
