In a time where educational principles are being scrutinized and numerous significant people are stressing the concept of reform, the main question stands: What is the purpose of schools and colleges? Given that American demographics are changing and the nation’s workforce is growing both older and more diverse, the value of a good education is higher than ever. The answer to the proposed question can diverge into two pathways; the first regards the most prevalent purposes of schools in the modern day, and the second refers to the goals that should actually be emphasized as well. Especially in the current economy, in which the post-college job market is very difficult to maneuver through, children in secondary education and beyond should be made aware of the tough conditions that await them after they graduate from high school or slave through college. Increasingly, young adults are finding that even after years of attending schools and progressing through college, their degrees are unable to help them find jobs. Due to the increase in diversity, and the rise in the probability that achievement gaps among students in schools will predict future socioeconomic statuses of many people, rifts in the education levels of children are more potentially dangerous than ever. Since we live in an unstable economic society, the country’s changing demographics may eventually cause a decline in the personal income per capita in the United States, impacting hundreds of thousands of people. Therefore, we must ensure that “education” remains the engine of upward economic motion for Americans and the youth of the world. In addition, after tragic events such as school and college shootings or student suicide, coping and functioning despite trauma can teach young adults how to use adversity to spring back and build themselves back up again.
