In June of 2013, Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL New England Patriots star was charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd. Several days after Hernandez was charged with murder, the Patriots released him. Then in May of 2014, prosecutors charged him with two additional counts of murder. It was suspected that Hernandez was responsible for the deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, who were killed during a drive-by shooting outside of a Boston nightclub in 2012. In 2015, Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On April 14, 2017, Hernandez was acquitted of the two counts of murder, however he was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm. Following the acquittal, Hernandez’s attorneys intended to …show more content…
appeal for a new trial in the Lloyd case. Just days after his acquittal, on April 19, 2017, Aaron Hernandez was found hanged in his Massachusetts prison cell. Aaron’s family and legal team was shocked at the news of death. Hernandez’s attorney, Jose Baez stated, “There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated anything like this was possible” (Hanna and Levenson). Aaron Hernandez’s death came as a surprise to many; partly due to the legal process he was making. There are many questions surrounding Aaron Hernandez’s sudden death.
What would cause him to kill himself; did he have a motive? What is particularly strange is that Aaron was perceived to be “... looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence” (Hanna and Levenson). Was there foul play involved in his suicide or did he truly kill himself? It turns out there may have been motive overall. According to Massachusetts law, Aaron Hernandez's legal saga ended when his life ended, meaning he died as an “innocent” man. In Massachusetts, there is a legal doctrine called abatement ab initio, “... if someone dies after a conviction but before the completion of their appeal, the person's legal records in that matter are wiped clean” (Johnson). Hernandez may have killed himself as a last attempt to provide for his family. Seeing as though, he died before the appeal was complete, he is now seen as a “free” man because he was never convicted. Technically Hernandez is no longer involution of the New England Patriots’ contract, because he was not convicted. Therefore, the Patriots may be legally obligated to pay Hernandez’s estate millions of dollars

Following recent cases of police brutality and racial oppression, many public figures are taking it upon themselves to stand against the issues. In this matter, Colin Kaepernick has been in the spotlight since his protest during a preseason game in August, where he took a knee during the National Anthem. In the articles “The Colin Kaepernick Effect; Another Athlete Stands Up For Social Issues” by LA Watts Times Sports Writer, Amanda Scurlock and “Colin Kaepernick’s Critics Called Him an Idiot. Who’s the Idiot Now?” by Slate Executive Director, Josh Levin, the authors talk about how Colin Kaepernick’s peaceful protest has had many positive and negative backlash. Kaepernick has received much support from not only his fans, but also people such
Many think Tom Brady is a great quarterback. He has great statistics and has won many Super Bowls.
A hero is someone who doesn’t give up and keeps on fighting for their goal. Jackie Robinson is a great hero and came over great challenges, but he achieved his goal. How Jackie Robinson embodies the human spirt is that he broke the color barrier, and the challenges he faced, and his life.
Jackie Robinson was the first black baseball player to play on the professional level, he was fearless, courageous, willful and strong. He was an advocate for civil rights, as well as a great baseball player. He had to try to keep quiet, and keep to himself while playing, but became a stronger and more extreme advocate over time. A leader on and off the fields dealing with much more than just baseball, he also had to deal with the criticism and racial tensions of a prominently white game. Branch Rickey, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a showman who knew how to make money and fame in baseball “he had made a fortune for the cardinals as well as himself, and black talent could argument his bottom line by transforming his struggling dodgers into a power house” (Zeiler, 17). He wanted to make his team great by any means possible. He put his eyes on Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson changed the game and the world, and will always be a huge figure in baseball and civil rights.
Formally, an immigrant can be defined as “a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.” But in some cases, there has been people like Cesar Chavez who have made a difference in history as an immigrant. Unfortunately, there are those who are not as lucky as Cesar Chavez and end up getting deported just like what happened in Operation Wetback in 1942. Now, they have made a way for immigrants to become U.S. citizens by taking the citizenship test. However, Donald Trump is one of the many people attempting to keep immigrants as far away from the U.S. Border laws are also another one of the many reasons why not many immigrants get the chance to enter this country because in many ways the laws that surround the border are in some ways unfair and not really the best. Immigration still remains a problem in our country
Al Capone once said about Alcatraz " Don't mistake my kindness for weakness, I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember me about." One of the most dreaded prisons in America was Alcatraz, it was built on an island in the San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz was made for the United States most dangerous and difficult people during its years of being operated. Even though Alcatraz was built as a top end prison it was possible to escape, however it seemed prisoners never made it off the island alive.
Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. If we want to keep our players safe and continue the tradition of the contact sports we enjoy as a country, then we must evolve our safety in sports, and change the way we view contact sports as a country.
Both boys involved in the murder of James Bulger came from rough backgrounds. The city of Liverpool is known for its poverty. Robert Thompson lived with his single mother and six siblings. Thompson’s aggressive nature concerned teachers and other parents. Jon Venables was the youngest of three. He also disturbed community members. A teacher of his stated, “He would literally throw himself around the room, banging off the walls and furniture” (1). Both boys had a history of violence. Venables once attempted to choke another student with a ruler. Social alienation and financial stress from home may have led them to attack. When questioned by investigators, neither boy revealed a motive; however, Venables said to investigators, "No, I didn't really want to hurt him, I didn't want to hurt him or nothing cause I didn’t was to hurt him with strong things, only like light things... I deliberately missed..." (11, p.11). The boys may have been looking for an outlet for their feelings that led to such acts of violence. Thompson, throughout his interview with investigators and trial kept unusually calm. He seemed almost bored. Venables on the other hand, broke into tears frequently throughout the interview and even asked
Jesse Jackson Jr. is a former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's second district. Jackson held the position for over seventeen years. Jackson comes from a family just like Ford that has strong ties to the black establishment. Jackson is the son of Jesse Jackson Sr, a civil rights activist, former candidate for the Democratic presidential, and a shadow U.S. Senator for the District of Columbia. By Jackson being the son of a former activist he might have a low crossover appeal like his father. For instance, they might see him as being just like his father putting his ties to the black community before other ethnics and races, which can be a problem. His strong connection may come off as a threat, which is understandable. I feel like who will want someone in power if you
Brett should be executed for the following reasons. My first point is, Brett ordered his men to commit several crimes. For example, The vicious attack on the tent town, setting the condo on fire, killing innocent people, and Owen saying “We had no choice.” To explain, He said that he had no choice and they followed Brett because they are scared of him, yet Brett’s squad had the choice to be killed and save lives because many lives outweigh the price of one. My second point, it is a waste of resources. For instance, Eden Mills has to feed and guard Brett and Herb said: “We have one less patrol out there and another twenty people guarding our prisoners.” To elaborate, It is a waste of resources and a security risk because it takes people away
It is reasonable to argue that, governmental institutions or people with authority are subject to withhold a great deal of information from society. Many may argue that secrets are kept to ensure the safety of the nation. Thus, upholding the governmental duty of protecting the nation against possible threats. On the other hand, many believe that secrets may exist which violate our constitutional rights. Over the last year, Edward Snowden, has made headline news for leaking sensitive governmental information to the press. Edward Snowden is a 29-year-old high school drop-out, who was a tech specialist for the National Security Association. Snowden had discovered and later exposed the NSA for monitoring the nations e-mails, phone calls, and internet searches. As the allegations spread like wild fire, Edward Snowden sought asylum in Russia for one year. Snowden had a valid and justifiable reason to expose the NSA to the world because they were in violation of our fourth Amendment rights to unreasonable searches and seizures. The government called him a traitor, while others viewed him as a hero for exposing the government. Edward Snowden is a whistle blower because he felt that it is up to society to decide if governmental practices are just or unjust. Snowden does “express the highest respect for the law”, and he wanted to protect the right of privacy for American citizens.
Sources state that “Oliver was also indicted on four counts of aggravated assault by a public servant for firing his rifle into a car full of teenagers leaving a party April 29. Jordan, who sat in the front passenger seat, was struck in the head. His two brothers and two friends were also in the car.” The chief of the Balch Springs police department, Jonathan Haber said, “ the Chevrolet Impala was aggressively reversing toward Oliver and Officer Tyler Gross”. However the evidence provided by the body camera contradicted what the chief stated. This cop`s actions of course got him “indicted Monday on a murder charge by a Dallas County grand jury.” Apparently this cop already had some incidents, for example, “Oliver was also indicted last month
In the word of Edward Snowden, “I don’t see myself as a hero because what I’m doing is self-interested: I don’t want to live in world where there’s no privacy and therefore no room for intellectual exploration and creativity” (Brainy Quotes). Many people and even universities have studied this case so much to where it has divided a lot of people including in the House of Senates. After reading this case several times I’ve developed my own decision that Edward Snowden is a hero in my eyes. My purpose in this paper is to inform you about facts the case showed and allow you to make your own decision rather Edward Snowden is a Whistleblower or a Traitor. To explain my position I will base my essay in three section. The first is basically Edward Snowden background information, the second is the steps he took to get the information and his purpose of releasing the documents, and finally I will give my reasons with help from others on why we support him.
Are high school sports beneficial or not for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
