In June of 2013, Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL New England Patriots star was charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd. Several days after Hernandez was charged with murder, the Patriots released him. Then in May of 2014, prosecutors charged him with two additional counts of murder. It was suspected that Hernandez was responsible for the deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, who were killed during a drive-by shooting outside of a Boston nightclub in 2012. In 2015, Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On April 14, 2017, Hernandez was acquitted of the two counts of murder, however he was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm. What would cause him to kill himself; did he have a motive? What is particularly strange is that Aaron was perceived to be “... looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence” (Hanna and Levenson). Was there foul play involved in his suicide or did he truly kill himself? It turns out there may have been motive overall. According to Massachusetts law, Aaron Hernandez's legal saga ended when his life ended, meaning he died as an “innocent” man. In Massachusetts, there is a legal doctrine called abatement ab initio, “... if someone dies after a conviction but before the completion of their appeal, the person's legal records in that matter are wiped clean” (Johnson). Hernandez may have killed himself as a last attempt to provide for his family. Seeing as though, he died before the appeal was complete, he is now seen as a “free” man because he was never convicted. Technically Hernandez is no longer involution of the New England Patriots’ contract, because he was not convicted. Therefore, the Patriots may be legally obligated to pay Hernandez’s estate millions of dollars
