Jesse Jackson Jr. is a former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois's second district. Jackson held the position for over seventeen years. Jackson comes from a family just like Ford that has strong ties to the black establishment. Jackson is the son of Jesse Jackson Sr, a civil rights activist, former candidate for the Democratic presidential, and a shadow U.S. Senator for the District of Columbia. By Jackson being the son of a former activist he might have a low crossover appeal like his father. For instance, they might see him as being just like his father putting his ties to the black community before other ethnics and races, which can be a problem. His strong connection may come off as a threat, which is understandable. I feel like who will want someone in power if you …show more content…
cannot see them as being equal. Gillespie mentions how that the New “Old Standard Bears” usually have a long trajectory. However, Gillespie prediction of Jackson has transformed because of his legal activities while serving as congressional representative. Therefore, I feel like Jackson should be placed under Gillespie typology “Chips off the Old Block”. This typology also has a low Crossover appeal and strong ties to the black establishment; however, they tend to have a short trajectory. Gillespie projected that Jackson will have been a long trajectory; however, Jackson misuse of political funds hinder his success in the political establishment after he plead guilty in 2012. It will be hard for Jackson to come back from this scandal because he has lost the trust of many individuals. Jackson ended a legacy that could have been a long trajectory into a scandal. Marion Barry was the Former Mayor of the District of Columbia.
Barry was a civil rights activist also in his life. He grew up when there were a lot of racial tense going on. Barry is not your typical Generation X, young black leader. If anything Barry helped to build the pathway for more young black politicians to aim for higher office Barry has strong black tie to the black establishment because he was not afraid to speak of racial discrimination and fight for what was right throughout his life. He would be in the classification of Gillespie of Phrase I type politics because he comes from an era that everything was racialized. However, in this era of Phrase III, I would probably place Barry in the New “Old Standard Bears”. That because I feel that Barry will have low crossover appeal because of his background as a civil right activist and someone who use to always protest for the lives of minorities. Before, Barry passed away in 2014 he had a long life of service with the government. He only lost one electoral and he has purse higher opportunities in his completely political career. Barry seemed to have had great successful because of his pass with the community
(Wikipedia). Michael Steele, Former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and is a part of the Republican Party. Steele is just like Barry, not a new black leader; however, Gillespie typologies can still be apply to his political career. Steele in my opinion will be a rebel without a chance when it comes to holding a high position in office. In the article, Why Is Michael Steele a Republican Candidate, stated, “Steele lacked some of the attributes typical of a candidate running for high office” (Sokolove). For instance, Steele was not the actually governor he was just the second man. Personally, I feel like the governor at the time running for the open governor seat used Steele as a poster child in order to get the black vote. Steele seemed like the party did not pick him because he is qualified for the job, which he was not but rather focus on how having an African American running mate might increase the odds of winning. In addition, even though he is black I feel that he would still have a low crossover appeal and weak tie to the black establishment because his opponents labels him as an “Oreo Cookie (Sokolove). If the people you are running against can see you as an Oreo then I wonder how the public would also perceive him. In additions, the term “Oreo cookie” is supposed to mean that people see you as only being black on the outside and white on the inside. Sometimes some individuals also label these individuals as being “token black”. Steele has not been the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland since 2007, which means that he might be putting a whole of pursuing higher office. Tim Scott is a “New Activist” that is a United States Senator from South Carolina that is a conservative republican. Scott is not the typically politician that went to an Ivy League and/or Historical Black College and University. Personally, Scott being a conservative republican he meant experiences a low crossover appeal. In addition, even though he probably comes from a black establish they might not have that many strong ties to him. Scott views being a conservative will probably be the reason he experience weak ties. However, even though Scott might have weak ties to the black community will not really hurt his career. Scott went from being in the insurance business to a state senator, which did not happen overnight (Wikipedia). Scott is a great example of how these new black leaders are not setting for lower positions and moving up. In addition, I can see that Scott might have an eye for being president in future because he has done many good things for South Carolina. Gillespie views of Black leader has been very interesting because you have individuals like Dawson who view this generation of black leaders as not being that strong when it comes to the black establishment. This new phrase of black leaders is different from the other generations of leaders. Gillespie phrase III black leaders are the reason why Dawson created a distinguish between Black Nationalist and the New Black Nationalist. For many years, many individuals have posed the question if we will ever have another strong leader like Martin Luther King Jr. For many, Barack Obama was that hope; however, he is a deracialized candidate who does not dawn on race and the black community that much. Many people might see him as an Ivy League black man that sold out the black community the moment he got in office. However, I see Obama as a new black nationalist that is use a blueprint for new black leaders to follow and make adjustment. Gillespie typologies help us to understand what kind of black leader can achieve a high office like Obama. Gillespie may have missed the mark with many of the leader such as the children that have political ties because of their family.
Andrew Jackson was a man that people see that he is a good person and others say he is a terrible person. Andrew Jackson can be bad person and a good person it depends what type of person is Andrew Jackson is he going to help out the world or is he going to mess up the world? Democracy is a form of government were the people have a right to assist in the law making process. If Jackson didn’t support the people and wasn’t in the government the bank and the people would be in a huge mess. Andrew Jackson was very democratic and there are political , economic and geographic ways to prove it.

“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” This quote is by Booker T. Washington. In the book “Up from Slavery” Mr. Washington was a poor African American man who wanted an education. He was able to peruse an education, through hard work and perseverance. Then he wanted to help others also receive an education, by building a school.
Today I will be discussing about an African American activist a minister a civil rights leader whom has made many contributions to the African American culture Rev. Al Sharpton. Who was born Alfred Charles Sharpton, Jr. Al Sharpton was born in Brooklyn, NY to his father Alfred Sharpton Sr. and his mother Ada Richards when his family moved he was then raised in Queens, NY. In 1954 He soon began to start developing a speaking style as a child he then started preached his first sermon at the age of four called, “Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled” at Washington Temple Church of God with an audience of over 800 people. Soon after that he then toured with gospel singer Mahalia Jackson who took interested in his unique speaking skills. At the age of 7 Al Sharpton first heard of the struggles with racial issues through the stories that his grandfather would tell him of how he was beaten by white men for simply standing in there way and not walking on the other side of the street.
Andrew Jackson was the epitome of the American Dream. He worked his way from being an orphan and a war prisoner before he was 14, to being the greatest military general America had ever seen. He won the battle of New Orleans and took over Florida with his own army. Common citizens marveled at his war tactics and his record of cheating death. He ran for President in 1824 and nearly won, if not for a “corrupt bargain”. He was the champion of the people, and the common men loved him. Despite all this, Andrew Jackson is infamous as one of the worst Presidents in the history of the United States. As President, he caused the economic crisis of 1837, he implemented the spoils system to reward cronies, and he ordered the genocide of Native
...about. Jackson’s life is based around the successes of the world and the life of humans, in which I do not find as important. In my belief of Christianity, I deem God worthy of my service, as Jesus as an example. I strive to be selfless, giving, and not focused anything else like Jesus. Such that I believe in another worldview as Phil Jackson, I do not see him as a role model.
Andrew Jackson also known as, “The people’s choice,” was a self made man. He represented the South and the Western frontier expansionism. He was a strong military leader, a superior Court judge, and an Indian fighter. Jackson represented the common man. The United States of America benefitted greatly from the actions of Andrew Jackson.
Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States of America. His terms were served from March 4, 1829 to March 4, 1837. He was a very religious person. Jackson attended church regularly. The president opened his cabinet meetings with a prayer. When he was general, he would say a prayer before battle to his men. Jackson was the first President elected hailing west of the Appalachians. At the time he was the oldest President to be elected into office. Jackson's presidency defined itself in two central points: the “nullification crisis” and the "Bank War." Jackson took office, The "American System" program helped economic development through utilizing transportation subsidies, and through protective tariffs on imports to aid American manufacturers. A lot of Southerners believed these policies promoted Northern growth and that this was at their expense. Jackson slowed down the American System by vetoing road, and canal bills starting with the Maysville Road in 1830. In1832 South Carolina declared the tariff unconstitutional which made it null and void. The state took steps to block tariff collections within its radius. Even though Jackson favored lower tariffs, Jackson acted swiftly to uphold federal supremacy by force, or any means necessary. He declared the Union indivisible. He then branded nullification as treason. Congress reduced the tariff in 1833, defusing the crisis.
Andrew Jackson became the United States of America’s seventh president in the year 1829. Born into poverty, Jackson received fame as a military hero and grew popular by representing the “common man”. He quickly became America's most influential political figure at the time. After such a polarizing career, Andrew Jackson was put onto the present day $20 dollar bill. In recent years there has been questioning by the american citizens about Andrew Jackson's qualifications. I agree that a man responsible for genocide and economic tolls on the country should not be represented on the bill.
Formally, an immigrant can be defined as “a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.” But in some cases, there has been people like Cesar Chavez who have made a difference in history as an immigrant. Unfortunately, there are those who are not as lucky as Cesar Chavez and end up getting deported just like what happened in Operation Wetback in 1942. Now, they have made a way for immigrants to become U.S. citizens by taking the citizenship test. However, Donald Trump is one of the many people attempting to keep immigrants as far away from the U.S. Border laws are also another one of the many reasons why not many immigrants get the chance to enter this country because in many ways the laws that surround the border are in some ways unfair and not really the best. Immigration still remains a problem in our country
...ugh PUSH-Excel, a program that focused on keeping inner city youths in school and providing them with job placement.
Andrew Jackson is one of the most controversial presidents. Many regard him as a war hero, the father of the Democratic Party, an inspiring leader, and a spokesman for the common man. While there is plenty to praise about the seventh president, his legacy is tarnished by his racism, disregard for the law of the land, cruelty towards the Native Americans, and ruthless temper. Jackson was an intriguing man who was multi-faceted. One must not look at a singular dimension, and cast judgment on him as a whole. To accurately evaluate one of the most complex presidents, it is crucial to observe Jackson from all possible angles. Prior lifestyle, hardships in life, political ideology, lifestyle of the time, political developments, and his character
Andrew Jackson is an extremely important individual in our society. Many people do not realize that he is the first president to be born as a common man. He does not have wealthy parents or a university education like some presidents before. He is high spirited with a quick temper and is always ready to support the people around him and defend himself. What makes his life significant enough to be remembered today?
In the Autobiography, “Narrative Life of Fredrick Douglas: An American Slave,” Fredrick Douglas writes to show what the life of a slave is like, because from personal experience, he knows. Fredrick Douglas not only shows how his life has been as a slave but shows what it is like to be on the bottom and be mistreated. Douglas shows that freedom isn’t free, and he took the initiative to become a free man. Not many African-Americans had the opportunity to make themselves free and were forced to live a life of disparity and torture. Through his experience Douglas shows us the psychological effects of slavery. Through Douglas’s memory we are able to relive the moments that continued to haunt his life. Douglas’s book showed the true
“I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more, if only they had known they were slaves.” Harriet Tubman was a woman known for her important role during the time that led up to the Civil War. She was a woman of incredible strength, courage, and determination. And while Harriet Tubman is credited for giving the slaves an option as to what way they shall spend the rest of their life, the sad truth lies within the quote above. While many people like to believe that slavery was a horrendous act that happened only with small minded people from the south many years ago, that isn’t the case in all honesty. In fact, the idea of slavery was highly debated about and troubled more minds than many are led to believe. While there are
