Gun Control
The number one controversial issue in America is the gun control debate. The U.S. has a lot of guns, so many in fact, that there's nearly one firearm for every person who lives in the country. The controversial subject about and within the gun control debate is whether or not gun laws should be stricken. The gun laws are well needed and are enforced heavily throughout the country because guns are everywhere. “According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, in 2009 there were an estimated 310 million guns in the U.S., including 114 million handguns, 110 million rifles and 86 million shotguns” (Jost, 464). The 2012 U.S. population was nearly 314 million. That may lead you to the mistaken impression that everyone

I would have to say that any way to make the laws stricter on gun controls could possibly decrease the number of mentally unstable people whom carry or have a gun. Meanwhile, the NRA continues to oppose all gun-control proposals. The debate has gotten only more heated since, “mid-January, when Obama unveiled sweeping recommendations from a gun-violence working group headed by Vice President Joseph Biden. Obama called on Congress to mandate universal background checks, ban the sale of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines and stiffen penalties for gun trafficking” (“White House”, 4). Obama also brought to the table twenty-three more executive actions, including launching a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign and improving mental-health care. By making background checks and the purchase denials are known to be very effective, reducing by around twenty-five percent the risk of the buyer committing new firearm-related or violent crimes. Six states already require all firearm transfers to be routed through licensed retailers, so background checks are completed and records are kept” (Vernick, 86). This will be very beneficial to society so crazy people cannot make crazy
Left, right, Liberal, Conservative, Democratic, Republican. There are a lot of synonyms for the sides of our nation divided. Divided on many things: religion, political views, morals, etc.. For a nation that prides ourselves on extraordinary security and unity, it is quite ironic that so many issues can cause such distress and uproar within communities. One such issue is gun control. As a white male in a middle-lower class family that has never owned a gun, I may be somewhat biased. Objectively as I can, I am going to report the facts and more importantly, try to find the core issues at play.
In modern day America there are many major topics that continue to divide our nation. Among the top issues are healthcare, the rising national debt, and the economy. These issues are commonly talked about and usually the overall opinion is the same, the only thing that differs is the approach to meet the common goal. Healthcare is usually considered a good thing and we need to get as many people covered as possible, the rising national debt is obviously considered bad and we need to find a way to reduce it, and the economy isn't strong right now and we need to find a way to improve it. This is common among most of the issues, however, one of America's issues tend to be extremely polarizing. Gun rights has become one of the most contested issues for the American public and opinions vary vastly on the desired outcome as well as the methods to obtain that desired outcome. One end of the spectrum believes that guns are too dangerous and wants heavy restrictions on the ownership of them. The other end believes the Second Amendment protects our right to own guns and want very little res...
In The United States of America there are lots of problems that are plaguing our nation. Gun Control is a problem that there is lots of controversy over. This is a problem that had a fire reignited under it when on December 14, 2012 a school in Connecticut was attacked. Many legislative bills have been introduced since then. (Focus of U.S Gun Control Shifts to States Year after Newtown Shooting) There are lots of issues that we have in our community with Gun Control that we have controversy over: background checks, age, classes, military guns, pistols, shotguns, and rifles. All of these things are apart of the plague in our Nation.
In conclusion, I believe that stricter background checks, mental illness laws, and gun tracking would drastically increase the safety of Americans while protecting the rights of citizens to own weapons like assault rifles, pump action shotguns, and handguns. Stricter mental illness laws are what needs to be focused on rather than ridding Americans of their firearms that are guaranteed by the second amendment.
So why is gun control such a hot debate? Perhaps to answer this question it would be important to look at some key statistics concerning handguns in our society. In this nation, where nearly half of all US households own at least one gun, nearly 30,000 people die from a gunshot each year (Dahl). From this alone it is no wonder gun control is such an important issue, however as bad as this may seem, the number of firearm related incidents have decreased over the years. In the early 1990’s the number of people killed or wounded by firearms soared. Since 1993 however the US has seen a steady drop in deaths due to firearm (The Lancet). Fatal firearms accidents have declined as well, nearly 40 percent in the last decade, and are now at the lowest levels ever recorded (Poe). So why the sudden drop? Antigun advocates would like to attribute this to an increase in gun control laws while pro gun advocates point to a decrease in unemployment rates along with other social factors.
There is an American consensus for some form of gun control. “…[F]irearms were involved in two-thirds of all murders in the United States and [t]he United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths…murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology” (Lepore). There might be some far extreme people who think that all guns should be banned but most sane Americans do not think that gun rights should be abolished. Americans regard self-defense as the most compelling reason to have a gun and twenty-two percent of households have handguns in the United States. However many people do think that gun control laws must be enacted and enforced. Pro-gun extremists and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) must understand that there is a real for many people at the uncontrolled s...
Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns and freedom away from law-abiding citizens. Many citizens have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection when used correctly. The second amendment states “the right to bear arms”; does this grant everyone the right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for the good guy average Joe to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.
We all want to be safe. That is a given. But is banning, confiscating, and outlawing our only source of immediate protection really a good idea? I want to talk about how no matter what you do with guns the murder/homicide rate stays the same.
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. This means that the United States of America’s citizens own more guns collectively than any other country's population. Making more gun control laws would be pointless sense criminals can still get and use firearms. More gun control laws should not be enacted because gun control laws infringe upon the right for self-defense and deny people a sense of safety, they diminish the right to own guns like assault weapons for hunting as well as sport, and the second amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to individual gun ownership.
The 2nd Amendment states that, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment gives people the right to bear arms and not be penalized for it. People tend to choose to own guns because they want a weapon that makes them feel safer. However, the second amendment applies to militias not civilians, so there’s no reason to let people have the right to bear arms. It tends to put people at ease yet, with all of the recent school shootings people are rethinking the second amendment. Many people are starting to believe that if the government gets rid of the right to bear arms then everyone would be better off and there would be many less school shootings. The gun violence in 2018 has killed many people. The increasing amounts of school
Adolf Hitler once said, “To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.” The United States has roughly 300 million guns owned by citizens, and while gun control claims that it will not take away all guns and merely regulate them, many people feel a danger to giving gun control any footing. While gun control advocates believe that gun control will equal less illegal activity, it is too easy to buy firearms online, and that nobody needs an assault style rifle, research shows that criminals do not follow laws, websites that sell firearms are extremely careful about who they sell to, and the second amendment states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” which includes assault style rifles. Both
it and, at a long term, violence will no longer exists in the world. The third argument to support gun control is
We live in a nation where buying firearms is a common interest shared by many. About “forty percent of firearms are sold without background checks” that can make many people feel uneasy knowing that we have had a few incidents of gun outrages in the past few years (CNN Wire). Our nations second amendment states that everyone has the right to keep and bare arms. This amendment allows all individuals to own guns in their position for reasons such as self-defense. In the article, New York Leads On Gun Control by New York Times, writes wrote about the new bill in regards to gun control in New York. The New York Legislature approved this bill making “New York one of the toughest places in the country to buy, sell or own dangerous weapons” (New York
One issue that resonate across cultures is gun control. Recently, there has been a lot of school shootings happening and many students and staff members were injured or killed. Most of the school shooting was caused by a student from the school, which is surprising because how did the student get the guns? I believe that the minimum age to buy a gun should be raised to 20 and there should be tighter gun control laws. Tighter gun control laws would help create a more safer school environment, reduce the amount of violent crimes, and bring peace to society.
In the United States today Mass shooting by gunmen has started a debate and is constantly growing over the years. Banning the right to have gun control is only right because the increasing number of deaths in the US should not be as high and it would make the US much safer.
