How many more lives have to be lost before the current gun laws can change? According to Every Town's tracker, there have been around two hundred and ninety incidents involving guns in schools since 2013. These incidents range from a gun being fired and no one being injured, to deadly school shootings that leave many innocent lives lost. The latest and one of the deadliest shootings in history occurred on Valentine's Day at Marjory Stoneman Doulas High School in Parkland, Florida. 14 students and 3 teachers lost their lives that day. Many sacrificing themselves to protect their classmates from gunfire. Soon after the ordeal, the survivors of the shooting rallied together and restarted the fight for gun control. Democrats in the House blame Republicans for no support on a bill that they believe could've prevented the shooting in Parkland. Since Congress is currently Republican-controlled Congress, there was no way that the bill could ever get the support needed to pass. Many other Democrats have taken the chance call once again for gun control and other measures to prevent and avoid future violence and death. Florida Senator Marco Rubio took a more bleak and critical approach to gun control. In a speech to the Senate, he stated that only having gun control laws and thorough background checks would not stop someone who has their mind set on committing a heinous crime. House Speaker Paul Ryan stated in a speech to Congress that they should avoid a, "knee jerk," reaction in the aftermath of such an event, which garnered angry responses from many other congressmen and women. There is a small minority of Republicans who support some kind of restriction on guns, but they refuse to make their voices heard out of fear that the NRA will be a direct opponent during their reelection. In a very Trump-like fashion, Donald Trump took to Twitter to blame the FBI for focusing too much on the Russia investigation to look into a threat made Nikolas Cruz online. "Very sad that the FBI missed all of the many signals sent out by the Florida school shooter," Trump tweeted Saturday evening, "This is not acceptable. …show more content…
Because politicians on the federal or state levels can't come together and find some kind of gun restrictions or background checks that will work. Or maybe because they fear upsetting their fiercely gun loving constituents and being kicked out of office in their next reelection. There's a sad trend that we've followed for years. The moment a mass shooting happens everyone talks about it for a week, they share their useless "thoughts and prayers" posts on Facebook, and everyone who isn't directly affected pushes it to the back of their mind and goes on with their lives. Though this time that trend is changing. With the renewed push for gun control measures will Congress be pressured into passing some kind of bill or face losing their seats in the coming election? Intelligent, and determined teens from around the country are spearheading the movement. They have come together to organize marches, walk-outs, debates against NRA officials and politicians as well as other events to show that tragedies like Parkland should never happen again. Whether we like it or not change is
Meanwhile, in the US, 27 people, including 20 first graders, were shot and killed in December 2013 in the Sandy Hook massacre and we are yet to see any laws designed to prevent another tragedy like it. There have been talks of new restrictions but nothing on the federal level has been done yet. If the death of 20 innocent children was not enough to fight for gun control and to take a stand, what will? Australia was able to enforce stricter laws without taking away the right to possess a
Gun violence in America has escalated drastically over the years. But it seems the only time we are outraged about the shootings or abuse of the 2nd Amendment is when there is a massacre of innocent people or a cop misusing his power and killing an innocent black person. “There have been at least 110 mass shootings in the US since 2009 at least 33 of which occurred in a public place” (TJF). After the vigils and outcries for change for change that fall on deaf ears, the problem is ignored and the abuse of the 2nd Amendment continues. There is no reform but instead there is another battle between the NRA, Congress, and the President of the United States. Gun regulation is constantly debated and is a very subjective topic because of the differing
The debate over firearms has been polarized for too long. Gun law is a never-ending issue because there hardly is any true debate. Americans (and even gun owners) do support the governments efforts to make sure guns are less dangerous in violent hands, but that is the main problem-the guns getting in the wrong human hands. Millions of law-abiding Americans do own and do enjoy their guns. But criminals and sometimes-disconcerted kids often use firearms to kill. The use of firearms has increased tremendously. An average day in Los Angeles is four people dying in a gun related crime and the United States faces approximately 87 deaths a day. There are more than 200 million guns in circulation in the United States and if you don’t own a firearm, chances are that your neighbor or friend does (Fineman 27). Sure, the Founding Fathers incorporated the Second Amendment as “the right to keep and bear arms,” but it did not give the distinction of using guns to kill more children and people than anywhere in the world.
There's a problem in America. Children, defenseless are being shot one by one. They go to their school and the schools are a gun free zone. The shooters take advantage of it and take the children's lives. Teachers should be able to carry a handgun to protect their children. This is very important, to all teachers and students for their safety. Shooters wouldn't come in the school knowing that the teacher had a gun. Students would feel way safer. There would be a lot of safety that would go into this.there are a lot of facts that can help us make the decision.
School shootings have gotten to the point where parents are afraid to send their own children to school. School should be a place where parents, children and faculty feel safe, wouldn’t you want to be safe somewhere that you attend every single day? After many school shootings throughout the nation, schools have changed the ways of not only the government and schools districts but of concerned citizens as well. The one real question that we have to ask is how many more of these and how many more deaths need to happen for real action to take place? This was answered after the Sandy Hook shooting. Government officials, school administrations and even the president himself are trying their hardest to prevent these from occurring. Schools throughout the nation have changed their procedures, security and have caused domino effects on many things.
The shootings that have happened in the schools throughout the Unites States over the past few months have created a great divide among Americans on what we should do as a nation to prevent further shootings from happening. Many people believe that imposing new laws on purchasing weapons by requiring background checks, holding adults responsible for the actions of their children and requiring gun locks on weapons to prevent children will stop these massacres in our school from happening. There are many issues that need to be looked at in order to decide which laws are necessary.
Since the birth of United States of America, guns have been sewn into the fabric of American culture. Guns were used for many meaningful things in those primitive times. Guns were used to protect one’s property from wild animals such as bears. Guns were used to hunt down protein-rich animals to feed families. Guns were used to defend American’s newly constituted freedoms from savage criminals, Native Americans, and European forces. Guns fit well into the fabric of American culture has stood the test of time. Today, however, the fabric that once brought the United States prosperity is now fraying and flawed due to the excessive use of guns. This addiction has shown to be a problem in several areas of American society, and statistics prove America
Today in the United States there has much debate over the countries current standing on Gun Control. Some Americans lean more towards supporting the bans, simply due to what people have seen with the mentally ill in the media today, these are often the indviduals who support restrictions that have been made on the purchasing of firearms. Others highly oppose gun control, standing firm by the belief that any form of suppression towards firearm ownership, is a clear violation of anyone 's constitutional rights. "In 1990, the Violence Policy Center announced that the debate must be switched from small handguns to large “assault rifles.” This led to states like California starting bans themselves on, "assault weapon magazines holding more than
Amongst the growing number of reports of school shootings in the United States, the question that continues to be asked remains a controversial issue that is heavily discussed. On one side of the argument are many gun owners, or gun activists, who insist that a looser gun control law is the solution, while on the other are the pro-gun control activists who call for a stricter law to help mitigate the increasing problem. Although people believe it would be safer if others were allowed to carry guns, concealed or otherwise, the truth is that a better gun control law would be more effective. While this is a controversial topic that leads people to develop strong opinions, it would serve well to get a sense of what people think about their stance on the issue as well as the defense and reasoning each side utilize and why in order to thoroughly disprove the former idea. Still a main component that fuels gun activist are concerns regarding constitutional rights but these concerns should not be where the topic focuses. There are also many doubts as to how effective gun control would be considering that quite a few fear that the lack of ease in owning
The debate over gun control in America has constantly brought up over the years due to gunmen killing large amounts of civilizations in shootings. From Columbine to Sandy Hook or the shootings of the two reporters in West Virginia, these public shootings are occurring everywhere. Lawmakers and civilians alike are pushing for increased gun control in hopes of preventing the same tragedies. Anybody that has been affected by the shootings have been pushing Congress and state governments to force new sanctions on government. With the past three years, Congress has shot down all the laws despite the large amounts of public support. Adding more gun control isn’t going to stop the mass shootings from happening.
Contrary to popular belief, gun related violence is not one of the main causes of death in the United States. In fact, gun violence does not appear in the top ten leading causes of death. Nonetheless, gun violence is still a major problem in the U.S., and one that could be reduced with a fair bit of concern and better decision making. In 2014, the United States had a population of roughly 319 million people. A recent study revealed that an estimated 55 million American citizens are gun owners (Jervis). Based on production data from firearm manufacturers, there were roughly 371 million firearms owned by private citizens and domestic law enforcement in the United States in 2014. Of these, about 146 million were handguns (Agresti & Smith). This

Between 1993 and 2003 gun ownership increased by 56 percent, and yet gun violence declined by almost 50 percent (Bandler). Criminals know that if people have guns to protect themselves, then they might not be successful and might not come out alive in a shooting. Gun Regulation is immoral because guns are not what kill people; it is the people who use the guns to kill people who kill people. Many of these people who cause these mass shootings and killings have mental health issues. Mental Health is a bigger issue than guns, and mental health will be regulated and not guns if the authority and the government want killings to stop occurring.
The United States is a great country that has the most liberal in the world, but the freedom of using guns is a problem to resolve for the Government of the United States. According Bloomberg, there are 33.000 people die from guns every year in the U.S that involve one-third of casualties due to someone having a gun killed by conspirators, the rest are the suicides by gun or death due to carelessness with firearms (E. Deprez). To a certain extent I agree that the United States needs to implement stricter laws on gun control is necessary; however, I also think that the gun control restrictions will affect to human’s rights. In my view, the tightening of gun control will help reduce crime.
