Military spending is good for the economy. Military bases transform the economy of the cities they are built in. Naval Bases in Virginia have raised the average house hold income. The income in these cities is higher than the average in America. Technology companies open and flourished around universities that received large amounts of military research money, thereby creating areas such as Silicon Valley, the route 128 corridor around Boston, the research triangle in North Carolina. Cities that house Naval Carriers reap many benefits. One single carrier can bring in over 6,000 jobs and over 400 million in local spending. This cause many cities to debate which city will get the honor. When the Navy announced it wanted to move one carrier …show more content…
In a New York Times poll, 55% of Americans were willing to cut defense in comparison to 21% that were willing to cut Medicare and 13% that were willing to cut social security. Even though the majority of people would rather see cuts to defense congress has remained apprehensive to cutting defense spending. While American's worry about the increasing cost of health care, their tax money is being used to fund a military more interested in aiding the health care of European allies.
The American people have been quiet for too long. It is time for the U.S to take a microscope to defense spending and weed out what is no longer important or affordable. Americans have been content to avoid the mess that is defense budget and leave it those "with bottom-line reasons for force-feeding it like a foie gras goose". It is time Americans set a reasonable budget and demand congress stick to it.
"Countries that continuously fight wars invariably build powerful national-security bureaucracies that undermine civil liberties and make it difficult to hold leaders accountable for their
Reinstating the Draft To each and every person, war means something different. For some, it is against the things they believe in, but for others it is everything that they believe in. In America, the men and women have the privilege to determine whether or not they are a part of serving this country by going into: the marines, navy, national guard, air force, etc. Previous to this choice being available, they had what was called the military draft. The military draft is where men from the ages 18 to 25 years old legally have to register with Selective Services where you could potentially be chosen to go to war.
As America heads into a new year, we find our government tightening its purse strings and cracking down on excessive spending, with an emphasis on the US military. According to author Brad Plumer, a reporter at the Washington Post, “U.S. defense spending is expected to have risen in 2012, to about $729 billion, and then is set to fall in 2013 to $716 billion, as spending caps start kicking in.” Pared with a more drastic 350 billion dollar cute going into effect over the next ten years, the military finds itself cutting what cost the most to maintain and support troops (Fact Sheet par. 2). In recent years the military has bolstered an overwhelming 1,468,364 troops (Active Duty). These numbers are to be cut substantially; the biggest cut is to be seen in the Army. The Army must deal with a reduction of 80,000 troops, cutting its force of 570,000 troops to nearly 140,000.Subsequently, the budget cuts, which have led to a reduction of troops in the military, has driven the military to turn to advanced weapons technology that requires less people to m...
Our country has fought hard in the past and in the now for the freedoms we have today. If it weren't for certain people, we would not be a free country. Who are these people? Our veterans.
Military spending should decrease because they are spending more money in defense then in us. “ Never underestimate the effects of cheap products and mediocre service on cost.” (Tierney 2) defense spending affects the country and the people. Spending less in product have more affect in products that cost more. You can spend in billion dollar rocket compare to a thousand dollar rocket and have the same impact and power. The result in high contractor turn over rates, which will drive poor performance and higher costs. Our government spends about 1 trillion of dollars per year in defense security programs. The U.S spends 54% of the money for military purposes. Overall its good to spend that much to keep us safe but you won’t be protecting nobody if we are all dead, for not supporting us. Whenever threats
The cost of the personnel has increased to nearly an unsustainable rate since 2000. Wartime funding was increased over inflation but the personnel has dropped. That being said, the defense spending in 2015 will be about $600 billion or 3.24 of the GDP. The defense budget pays into not only base defense, but also to veterans, civilian and foreign military aid. Each of these expenditures go into the percentage that the government is allocating to defense. Contrary to popular opinion, the money does not strictly go to weapons and military personnel. Health and care for military and veterans alike is on the rise. Retiree pay and benefits comprise the DOD spending for veterans. As discussed, funding for defense is important when it comes to sustaining our country and being a competitor for war
"The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country” (-General George S. Patton Jr). Here within our borders we are the lucky ones, we have been blessed with the pleasure of so many brave men and women; to volunteer in the world's greatest military; and put their lives on the line for something that they believe is a moral obligation. But, think of some other countries, that have conscription (the practice of ordering people by law to serve in the armed forces) laws. We as a nation have some laws on conscription, and if you are male and above the age of 18 you have already signed the slip of paper stating that in the time of war; if our great nation re-instated the draft then there is a great chance you will be serving on the frontline of the next Great War. This brings me to my first topic of this page, is it ethical to have a draft? My second topic that I will discuss will be on if it is morally acceptable to "draft dodge". What I mean on the second topic is if you have a right; that morally allows you to not go fight in the war.
The U.S. military is a strong force and body that protects and serves the American people. Many people support the military and some even disagree with it. What people forget is that without a military the U.S. would be totally over run by foreign countries claiming ground. The military also helps with the nation’s economy boosting the balance of money in the works. Families have trouble with members who serve since there is always chance that they never return but it is because of their service that we are still a free country. Even though the military causes pain to families when a loved one is lost, the U.S. needs a military because with a military the economy increases and that without a military we would be invaded by a dictator or foreign
Conscription, also known as drafting, is a practice that requires mandatory enlisting into any of the branches of the armed forces. This practice has been adopted by the United States at the very least two times before and from what I can remember during World War II and the Civil War conscription was being practiced. Nowadays conscription is not practiced in the United States because there isn’t a need for it. Now, if you want to join the army you can do so by volunteering. However, there are people who believe conscription should be brought back. Some people believe that the drafting of younger people might help these young people develop useful skills and cultivate a sense of unity and national pride. Although all of these are valid reasons,
Just like a homeowner takes out an insurance policy and has a security system installed, they hope that these will never have to be utilized, but are available if needed to protect the family. Similarly, the United States has equipped itself with air, naval, ground bases as well as a stockpile of weaponry in the event that we find ourselves offensively or defensively fighting. Basically, home defense measures amount to over eighty-percent of the nation’s defense budget. With these astronomical figures, one may question whether or not these types of expenditures are excessive when considering the infrequency of attacks on U.S. soil. To further break down this nearly $500 billion base budget, roughly $200 billion is allotted for operations/maintenance, $135 billion for military personnel, $90 billion for procurement, and $65 billion for research/development (Gould & Bender, 2015).
The United States is an extremely affluent country, however, the U.S. government does not allocate its funds correctly. The government spends entirely too much of the budget on military spending. A segment of the military budget should go towards education. Education is completely undervalued in America and is often pushed to the side in political debates. Conversely, several of the top-ranked countries in education are also flourishing economically. Even though the U.S. is struggling to compete in education, the government has all but given up at this point. There are no signs of increased education spending or a decrease in military spending. How is this country supposed to continue to grow and move forward if the citizens
A critical period of the United States was from 1783 to 1812. During this time, America was setting its foundation as a new country. The nation would not have survived without armed forces. The military during that time protected the citizens from internal and foreign threat, but they also provided more than that. They protected individual rights, such as life, liberty, and property of the American citizens.
I am not saying that civilians are losing by putting so much money into military purposes, because without their research spending there would not be some civil resources that are important to everyday life that were developed by the military. There are just many military expenditures that could be cut in order to free up more money for other usages so that the civil economy doesn't have to carry such a burden from it.
NATO is a very controversial topic that should not be taken lightly. Many stand for it but there are also many against it. The organization started so that the Western European countries could ally with the U.S. for peace. It was mainly to do big decision making together. At times, NATO has fallen, and at times, it has risen above. Should people rely on NATO, or should they rally against NATO?
When I first entered college I was an undecided new student who wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted my life to go. Once I started taking a couple of classes in the business, Marketing and social work fields I knew right away what my calling was. Just having that first intro to social work class my attention was hooked. I loved the classes and the experneices I learned about. I realized that my direction of college and a degree was to be accomplished in the social work setting. Being able to help those in need in Micro and Macro setting. Moving forward in the social work degree I soon realized that I was fully comminted to this major, knowing that one day I could help those people and children in the worl warmed my heart. My sophomore and senior
As we all grow up we attend some sort of elementary, intermediate, high school, then most go on to college. This is the generic life of any American citizen, however; is generic all this world is capable of? Is everyone in this country always going to go through the motions as the ones before us? The United States is ranked 14th in education in the world, simply because we always follow what the ones did before us. Seven of the top ten countries ranked in education have a mandatory minimum enlisting of eight months.(Wormer page) One in four high school graduates attend some sort of military school in the U.S. The United States military are all well rounded educated citizens who are taught how to handle any physical and
