A critical period of the United States was from 1783 to 1812. During this time, America was setting its foundation as a new country. The nation would not have survived without armed forces. The military during that time protected the citizens from internal and foreign threat, but they also provided more than that. They protected individual rights, such as life, liberty, and property of the American citizens.
What exactly is a veteran? Is it someone who is older and treated as our elders? Is it someone who had control and general ranking during wars? A veteran is defined as any person who served time in any military service. What makes veterans paramount? It’s the fact that they fought for our country that makes them important to us and our

future. Not everyone has the audacity or bravery to go to foreign territory and fight others, possibly having to terminate them. They are the reason we are able to wake up every day and enjoy the lives we chose for ourselves. Veterans make sacrifices for the people of the United States, and for the less fortunate around the world. They sacrifice their health and their mental stability for the country. Why do people make that kind of sacrifice? It shows their dedication and their love for who we are today. Veterans are the people who change the world we live in for the better. “Live free or die.” The motto of Maine represents one of the ideals veterans have fought for.
They die in order for humanity to live in freedom. The American Revolution is the war that liberated the colonies from Great Britain and enabled them to become the United States. Charles B. Rangel states that “Honoring the sacrifices many have made for our country in the name of freedom and democracy is the very foundation of Veterans Day.” July 4th 1776 is the day that represents all that the veterans have fought for. They fought for our independence, and not because they were forced, but because they chose to work for the greater good. Steve Buyer states in a quote “America’s veterans embody the ideals upon which America was founded more than 229 years …show more content…
ago.” The veterans of this country represent the selflessness of the men and women throughout history who have sacrificed much in various conflicts.
In the past, veterans have fought people, such as tyrants, dictators, and emperors, who threatened to take our rights away. World War I started as a dispute over territory in the European countries. The United States joined the war two years after the dispute began, siding with Britain, France, and Russia, to fight for peace and to preserve democracy in Europe. The soldiers who fought chose to keep the country safe from possible invasions and to make world peace. The veterans who fought in World War II faced new technological warfare and a different enemy. Despite terrifying conditions, the veterans persevered for the greater good, and managed to help guide the world back into balance. The War on Terror is being fought in order to establish democracy and a stable baseline for peace in Iraq, as well as the world. Now they face a new adversary, disguised and not met on the traditional field of battle. They also are not sure who the enemy really is, which makes their purpose difficult to achieve. Veterans preserve the protection of rights established by the blood of the Revolutionary soldiers, but their purpose is also much greater than that. They also help in making peace ubiquitous around the world and helping other countries advance in their ways, technologically and
culturally. Veterans have also made contributions to the world when they came back from service. For example, When World War II ended, the veterans brought their experiences and used them to change business, education, and much more. The challenges they faced in the world were used to help our country grow and develop, and it will continue to do so in the future, especially with the world progressing. Our future as a country will drastically change as a result of our veterans. Warfare is constantly advancing, and throughout history the way wars were fought has changed, from hand-to-hand combat to the technological aspects of fighting. As time goes on, veterans continue to blindly risk their lives in changing environments. Whether it would be the actual environment or the culture and customs of a place, veterans still take the risk. One person, no matter who it is or what their purpose is, can change history. Whether it’s one person or an entire branch of the army, all veterans have had an impact on our past. The soldiers from this generation, who will decide to fight for what’s right, are the people who will define our future and our posterity. Veterans preserve our own history with their stories and they also preserve the honor of America by the fact that they are veterans. A famous quote by Bill Shuster is “Our veterans accepted the responsibility to defend America and uphold our values when duty called.”
For a school project we interviewed veterans and reflected on those interviews, I gained a better understanding of how to answer the question: why are veterans important to us. Veterans remind us of the horrors of war, of the innocent lives that were lost, and the millions of people those lost lives affected. Each of those veterans that we see has served our country fighting not only for our rights but also for the rights of those across the world. They chose to leave their families, jobs, and life back home to go and make sure that those human rights were being maintained across the world. That sacrifice of leaving everything behind is mind blowing.
The purpose of Veterans Day is to honor veterans who have served and sacrificed for our nation. Nevertheless, nobody knows what veterans do or how they feel after separating from the military.
America’s veterans should be honored because they have suffered through so many hardships that others could not and have not survived, and they did it for their country that they loved and still love today.
Tragic events occur not only in the United States, but also all over the world. From these tragic events communities, families, and the government decide to place memorials for people that were lost and as a thank you for people protecting the citizens of the country. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Wall, in Washington D.C. is one of these cases. However, what exactly was the purpose of this memorial? The purpose of putting up the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was not only to thank the veterans for their bravery, but to remind future generations about happened during the Vietnam War. Also, the memorial is important to help people and the veterans to accept the fact that the war actually
Envision a man that sat on a grimy concrete block, as nightfall began to crystallize before his eyes. His hair, charcoal-grey, was matted and straggly, as if he had ever known the pleasure of a hot shower or comb except when he was in the war. His once shimmering brown eyes were know hollow and cold. His eyes, that were once filled with the upmost blissfulness, now sagged like the bulky bags underneath his eyes, consumed by the loneliness and despair he felt for himself, for his lack of purpose in life. This man did not bare a smile, only crinkles where one used to be. He wore his only faded blue jacket with a tan shirt tucked underneath it. He wore cruddy worn out jeans that barely seized his thin waist and boney legs. His only pair of shoes that were once white, we're now grungy. His finger nails were bitten and dirty. This man, like many other homeless veterans, struggle everyday of their lives.
Growing up I always had to deal with the fact that my father was involved in the military. My father was deployed twice: once in Germany, and later to Kuwait. I was only four years old when he first traveled and almost every day I asked where dad was. The second time I was fourteen, and I was devastated that my best friend wasn’t going to be home for a year. Both times he left, it was awful for my mom, my brother, and me because he was the one person that kept us together as a family and once he was gone we were just broken. A military family goes through more than a regular family does in a year. Those veterans have families, how do people think they feel. Children who live in a military family have a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental issues. Although many people believe that we should send our soldiers overseas to keep our country safe, there is no reason why our
Veterans day means a day for us to thank the ones who have served in the military and war. Sacrificing every moment of their lives to defend our country. The Veterans have a significant importance everywhere. Whatever the reason is for them serving our country we should appreciate them for all their work. Veterans day was created because World War I ended . Fighting and wars did not end and are still going on and there are still Veterans out here today. Veterans day is a day to celebrate ones who were in war. Not to be confused with Memorial day , memorial day is when we celebrate the ones who died serving. People today in our society don’t take in consider the ones protecting us every single day. Who do you think fights for us and our country.
For years on end, countries have been fighting with big museums from other countries for ancient artifacts that belong to the original countries. The argument of whether or not the museums should be able to keep them still remains. It is the right of the country to have their own artifacts. It is imperative for countries to be able showcase their historical artifacts, therefor museums should return them to their rightful owners.
“A Veteran is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States of America for an amount up to, and including, their life. Regardless of personal political views, that is an honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer remember that fact.”
Veterans are a hearty lot. They serve and sacrifice, and having the honor of wearing the uniform is enough thanks for most of them.
Veterans that are homeless should be housed. This is important because more and more people are signing up to join the army. The more people that sign up means, there will be more veterans that are homeless. The more homeless people that roam the streets means bad neighborhoods and even worse schools. More effort should be directed to help homeless veterans to get their lives back.
"The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country” (-General George S. Patton Jr). Here within our borders we are the lucky ones, we have been blessed with the pleasure of so many brave men and women; to volunteer in the world's greatest military; and put their lives on the line for something that they believe is a moral obligation. But, think of some other countries, that have conscription (the practice of ordering people by law to serve in the armed forces) laws. We as a nation have some laws on conscription, and if you are male and above the age of 18 you have already signed the slip of paper stating that in the time of war; if our great nation re-instated the draft then there is a great chance you will be serving on the frontline of the next Great War. This brings me to my first topic of this page, is it ethical to have a draft? My second topic that I will discuss will be on if it is morally acceptable to "draft dodge". What I mean on the second topic is if you have a right; that morally allows you to not go fight in the war.
It is understandable that some people may disagree on improvement of veteran care due to simple things like the fact that “veterans were getting addicted….even dying, from over prescription,” when they asked for assistance with their PTSD, but when all things are considered, veterans risked their lives for freedom. People should be able to take the time to take care of those who were willing to give their lives for freedom. Colby Buzzel says “if you want to know what the price of freedom looks like, go to a V.A. waiting room- wheelchairs, missing limbs, walking wounded.” These are all things that veterans have to go through to ensure freedom. And that is added to their struggle of PTSD. So, before people say that veteran care for PTSD does not need improvement, they need to think about whether or not they are willing to pay the same price that these veterans were willing to
Veteran’s day is a reflection of the peace and the warrior culture in the United States. While peace cultures strive for tolerance and positive peace, warrior cultures focus on aggression and domination and this Day demonstrates how both cultures are engrained in the American society.
The old man moved slowly over to his chair. As he started to sit down, his whole body shook. When he started to talk, the loud room became quiet. We waited silently as he explained his story of his service during the Vietnam War. He told us of his fears and the details down to the sweat rolling down his back. Then the next man spoke about his similar, but yet so different experience during his time in Iraq.
