The movie Princess Bride by Rob Reiner presents a journey though tragedy. In the beginning, Wesley the young boy in the movie is naïve, innocent, and he is in love with princess Buttercup. He is not from a rich family as the princess so he leaves to make money so he can marry the love of his life Buttercup. On the way he is captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts, where he had to suffer a lot. However Wesley survives the torture and become one of them, a lower pirate. His character describes loss of innocence because he was not
Archetypal criticism reveals that the strength of a relationship can overcome misfortune by reflecting the quest archetype.
Every story has characters with different roles, and each of them are important to make the story complete. Three characters, Bilbo, Gandalf, and Smaug represent three archetypal roles in this story. Their guide Gandalf, represents the mentor, Bilbo represents the hero, and Smaug represents the shadow. Smaug symbolizes fear to the characters, and the dragon represents one of the characters that are most often causing the most terror and trouble to the other characters in the story. The hobbit symbolizes the hero of the story, because he sacrifices himself throughout the book. Mr. Bilbo Baggins learns more and more each day, and he tries to always do the right thing. Gandalf symbolizes the guidance and help as a mentor, and he provides training and motivation to the characters. These three important characters greatly explain the
In the story “The Princess Bride” we read of action and adventure, and if you have watched the movie you have a very romantic view of the tale. Before I read the book that was my view, which after reading the book, I found to be incomplete. Fortunately, I have read the book and my view of this adventure has changed from a less romantic one to a more realist thought. I believe that what William Goldman was trying to tell us, in his book version of the story, is that life is made up of reality, sprinkled with what I would call romanticism of the realist. What I mean by this is that even realists must have a desire to believe in “Twoo wuv.” In the end what we find is that even though we have our romantic notions, life happens and life is what is real. What this book provides is the realities of life and how life is not fair, wrapped inside a tale of adventure.
When I was reading the how to read literature like a professor and the hobbits the three archetypes I saw was the communion at the beginning of the book, the death and resurrection that happen to our hero through the novel, and the hero quest that was going through the entire novel.
Simba arrives with Timon and Pumbaa, we see very little of his life until he is
Frank R. Stockton's “The Lady or the Tiger” portrays through the White Goddess vs. the Creature of Nightmare, the Maze along with the Crossroads, and Star Crossed Lovers archetypes that love is a sacrifice. For example, the author describes the princess as, “..hot blooded...” with a, “...soul at a white heat beneath the combined fires of despair and jealousy. ”(3). Similar to the Creature of Nightmare, the princess has evil within her psyche.
Vampires are mythical creatures that many in this world have tried to find existence. People predicted vampires came from Transylvania, slept upside down during the morning and burnt to ashes when they were out in the sunlight. An American author named Stephanie Meyer had written four books in total, involving a human and a vampire meeting by chance and falling in love. With the spread of the saga of books spreading quickly, the four popular books soon made it onto the big screen. Not only were these series a hit in English-speaking nations, it attracted other international audiences, allowing people of different ethnic and origins to relate to it. How do people relate to these movies? Due to the series being
“ Once a king in Narnia, always a king in Narnia” (Lewis, 206) Clyde Staples Lewis said this in his novel, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. C. S. Lewis was a British Writer and scholar, He was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast England. His mother died when he was ten years old, consequently, he lost his faith in the Christian god and not only but also declared his self an atheist. Later in life, he regained his faith and became a Christian. (“Faith”). In his novel C.S. Lewis uses the archetype the evil figure with the ultimate good heart, the symbol of Father Christmas, the symbol of the stone table, The symbol of the muzzle and the public defacing of Aslan, lastly the symbol of Aslan breath to convey his theme of Christianly in his novel.
This is the first time I have seen a Thief in love with the Sultan's daughter. Aladdin actually makes fighting for a princess different than any other Disney movie. In Aladdin they have a very familiar cast including Scott Weinger as Aladdin, Robin Williams as the Genie, Linda Larkin as princess Jasmine,Frank Welker as Abu, and the evil Jafar played by Jonathan Freeman. In Aladdin it shows that not everyone sees things the same way, like if you are poor and you have no home to sleep in you might find one person to help you out of that situation.
I have watched the Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics of Beauty and the Beast where I talk about the films use of archetypes. Maria I believe is the archetype of the innocent because she was happy with not getting anything at all from her fathers trip to the market. The father is to possibly be the archetype of the caregiver because he wants to get his daughter Maria a present. The father also wants to protect her from the beast after he stole from the beast by giving up his life. The beast is the archetype is the lover because he just wants someone to love him and marry him. I want to say that this fairy tell complicates archetypal because at the start of the story the beast appears to be the evil villain or the bad guy but we later learn that
In Chapter two of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the main character, Tom Sawyer, is shown to be more than just a typical boy. The Author, Mark Twain, applies detailed imagery to create an archetypal hero. An archetype is a character shown as the model boy, girl, American, etc. During the story, Twain depicts a glorious Saturday morning full of sunshine and life. The description causes the reader to picture a faultless paradise. He opens with:
In the book, The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien, the author chooses to include some aspects of the epic hero and epic journey archetype and not others. This is used to develop the protagonist, Frodo, and the journey as a whole. Frodo does not fit the usual characteristics of an epic hero. However, his journey and the people who travel with him on his journey are typical epic journey archetypes.

Westley shows that he loves Buttercup but does not want to live on the farm anymore so that he can get a better life for the both of them. When Buttercup realizes she truly loves Westley, and wants to spend the rest of her life with him. Buttercup would tell Westley to do things just so he could say the magic words. “ Farm boy fetch me that pitcher” ( Princess Bride). This shows that Butercup loved Westley even though she did not show it, and this would send him on his adventure. Tom Hutchsion expressed in his article that “ There is a call to a new experience.
