“New Historicism is a literary theory based on the idea that literature should be studied and interpreted within the context of both the history of the author and the history of the critic.” Lady Windermere’s Fan applies to the historicist view by showing The Duchess of Berwick’s power over her daughter Lady Agatha Carlisle in order to agree with what society expects during the Victorian era. Men were also considered very dominate in this era just like Lord Windermere and Lord Darlington. Wilde uses the Duchess as a vehicle to portray “the materialism that lies beneath society’s stern morality” (Eltis 92). The Duchess “keeps her daughter ignorant to ensure her marriageability” (92). The typical Victorian woman was thought to be weak and passive. She was taught to be submissive to authority and to keep her opinion to herself or not to have an opinion at all (93). The Duchess of Berwick is an older woman who at first seems polite and nice, but out to be a nasty gossiper. She initiates the disagreement between Lady Windermere and Mrs.Erlynne by gossiping about Mrs. Erlynne and Lord Windermere having an affair. During the play, she is only interested in marrying her daughter, Lady Agatha Carlisle, off to Mr. Hopper who is a very wealthy Australian. The Duchess of Berwick refuses to let her daughter waltz with younger sons because she explains, "It looks so fast!" (Wilde 66). Dancing with the younger boys would put Agatha's reputation in jeopardy because society would look down on it. Thus, individuals in society had to adhere to the traditional “rules” in order not become an outcast. The duchess only sees Mr. Hopper as “a commodity” (Eltis 92) and nothing more just like many other Victorian mothers see their daughters’ husbands. ... ... middle of paper ... ...and charm. When Lord and Lady Windermere were found in a debate discussing whether they would invite Mrs. Erlynne to the party, Lord Windermere dominated this debate and ended it by telling Lady Windermere that he would invite Mrs. Erlynne. This shows that Lady Windermere is less dominant than Lord Windermere, even though the event was going to be held for her because of her birthday. As you can see, men and women during the Victorian era had very different and distinct. Their duties were not based on the individual’s abilities but rather their gender unlike modern day England where an individual’s duties are based on their strengths and weaknesses as a person. Also, modern day women have so much more strength and equality then during the Victorian era where they had to obey their mothers and husbands and couldn’t live their lives the way they wanted to.

Elizabeth Bennet ultimately disregarded her mother’s wishes, and passed over Mr. Collins, she initially disregarded Mr. Darcy as a possible suitor but love proved otherwise. These women were on a path of destruction to free themselves from a long reign of oppression, their challenge of conventional methods within the nineteenth century, proved successful not only to them, but for a future collective group of women who would follow in their footsteps.
During the Victorian Era, society had idealized expectations that all members of their culture were supposedly striving to accomplish. These conditions were partially a result of the development of middle class practices during the “industrial revolution… [which moved] men outside the home… [into] the harsh business and industrial world, [while] women were left in the relatively unvarying and sheltered environments of their homes” (Brannon 161). This division of genders created the ‘Doctrine of Two Spheres’ where men were active in the public Sphere of Influence, and women were limited to the domestic private Sphere of Influence. Both genders endured considerable pressure to conform to the idealized status of becoming either a masculine ‘English Gentleman’ or a feminine ‘True Woman’. The characteristics required women to be “passive, dependent, pure, refined, and delicate; [while] men were active, independent, coarse …strong [and intelligent]” (Brannon 162). Evelina and Northanger Abbey both belong in the 18th-century literature syllabus because they are good examples of how two different vehicles used to tell a story—a “history,” told in epistolary form, and a witty, tongue-in-cheek narrative—can completely transform the tone of a piece. On the surface, these are two novels about young women growing up in Europe during the18th century. They are both told with humor, they both offer great insight into the mind of their observant female leads, and they both give the reader a glimpse into the manners and customs of the time. On a deeper level, however, the differences between the two texts lie in the manner in which the story is told—and this comparison point is where the reader truly gleans a richer, fuller view of females coming-of-age in the 18th century.
Using Caroline Bingley as a foil to Elizabeth, Austen critiques the aspirations and achievements that are traditionally considered to be of value to women. Caroline’s outlook regarding what makes women accomplished finds resonance with James Fordyce’s Sermons to Young Women (1766). These stereotypical regency-era ideals encourage ‘instruction in the fine arts’ (Fordyce, 127), including the study of embroidery, drawing, music and dance and completely discount the value of academic achievements. In conclusion, the woman of the Victorian Era had her role in life planned out from before she was born. Although it was a dreadful role these women carried it out in a way that shows their purity of the heart and willingness to do so many of things for others and for little return. They were truly a remarkable testament to hard work and ingenuity of the time that even the men of the time could have learned from.
The Victorian period is often defined by its antique images of flowers, doilies, rosy-cheek children and intricate fashion. However, these trite images shadow the true realities of middle-class families struggling to succeed in the emerging business world. Traditionally, the men spent long days in the city working out business affairs, while the women stayed home with the children preparing meals and planning for social gatherings. Work was often not an option for women because they were seen as incapable of any duty outside of the home. However, with the onset of Queen Victoria’s reign, the women of England slowly began to challenge their subservient roles, taking on jobs as teachers, writers, and charity workers. Over the next fifty years, women explored many occupational fields that were before only available to men. The Victorian women were able to controvert many of the stereotypes that existed about them, while also creating a future filled with new opportunities for women of all classes.
Women in the time of Jane Austen dedicated their lives to being good-looking (seen in the vanity of Lydia and Kitty especially) and accomplished to ensure they were marriage material, just as the maiden tried to be enchanting and desirable for The Prince. Both texts illustrate an imbalance and struggle for equality within the oppressive rules and expectations that revolve around women’s lives, and so, their relationships.
The roles of women have always been a big part of British society. Charlotte, serving as a basis for time’s views, allows the reader a glimpse into the institution of marriage in the Regency Era. Charlotte more than emphasizes just how radical Elizabeth was for her time, since she was willing to wait for the perfect man rather than settle. As a contrast, she helps Austen create a unique relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. Austen disproves Charlotte’s and the general society’s pragmatic belief in a likely unhappy marriage. Through Charlotte’s marriage, Austen gains a more cynical and realist voice; she shows that the heart does not always have to be consulted with for a comfortable union.
The Victorian era was an extremely difficult time for women in Great Britain. They were subject to gross inequalities such as, not being able to; control their own earnings, education, and marriage. As well as having a lack of equality within marriage, women had poor working conditions, and an immense unemployment rate as well. In fact, Austen's proposed counter view of the aristocracy by satirizing their social rank. Lady Catherine is effectively used as a satirical representation of the aristocracy through her paradoxical breach of true social decorum and her overblown immodesty. Evidently, Lady Catherine is nothing short of the critical bond that holds the structure of Pride and Prejudice together.
In John Mill 's’ essay, “The Subjection of Women”, Mill evaluates and analyses, the social differences between the sexes of the Victorian era. Mills raises some valid points about the subjection of women pertaining to the 19th century. Mills argues that during this time women are treated by their husbands as slaves to a master, not offered an equal opportunity in terms of employment, and their educational achievements aren’t recognized nearly as much as their male counterpart.
Over the centuries, women’s duties and roles in the home and in the workforce have arguably changed for the better. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen teaches the reader about reputation and love in the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries by showing how Elizabeth shows up in a muddy dress, declines a marriage proposal and how women have changed over time. Anything a woman does reflects on her future and how other people look at her. When Elizabeth shows up to the Bingley’s in a muddy dress, they categorize her as being low class and unfashionable. Charles Bingley, a rich attractive man, and his sister had a reputation to protect by not letting their brother marry a ‘low class girl’.
