The 1969 Moon Landing: Real or Hoax? Apollo 11, or the Moon Landing of 1969, is a highly renowned event, and is thought by many to have never happened, due to this misunderstanding, many have come to discredit the entire event and rely on conspiracy theories. A Conspiracy Theory is “The belief that some secret but influential organization is responsible for an event or phenomenon” (Conspiracy). Conspiracy theories are often made up during times of crisis or misunderstanding, and those who believe them often are suspicious and confused about the workings of the world. Although the event has been proven to be true time and time again, the 6% of Americans who believe it a hoax say the same things: the flag waves, there are no stars in the pictures, and the US must have faked it to win the space race against the USSR (Godwin). Bill Kaysing is the name of the man who came up with the unhinged conspiracy theory that the US faked the Apollo 11 mission. Kaysings’s reasonings are these, “One is the fact that no stars are visible in the pictures; another is the lack of a blast crater under the landing module; a third is to do with the way the shadows fall” (Godwin). While there is substantial evidence that disproves each of these statements, one fact that truly registers is knowing that nearly half a million people helped on the Apollo 11 mission. To lie to the entire world for over fifty years is not only outrageous, but also impossible (Godwin). While each of these pieces of false evidence have been disproved, some still believe the event to be fabricated.
