Essay 3 (Reflective) We have studied in the course, the diversity of distinct theoretical orientations in counselling and psychotherapy. Each theory has distinct philosophies accrued over a long period of time to augment a successful therapeutic outcome with the most significant being psychodynamic, cognitive- behavioural and humanistic. However, I am personally inclined towards the behavioural-cognitive theory. Behavioural theory founded by Pavlov and Watson emphasise that all behaviours are learned through conditioning, and cognitive theory pioneered by Ellis and Beck highlights cognitions that impact feelings and behaviour. This theory further propagated into Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Cognitive-behaviour approach postulates that individuals develop cognitive patterns called ‘schemas’ that comprise of their beliefs. This further impacts their perception and interpretation of any given situation resulting in cognitive vulnerability. These maladaptive beliefs make clients resist progressive change but through metacognition the client verifies his/her irrational interpretations towards realistic ones. I belong to a minority group of migrants in Australia and migrants are susceptible to psychological distress due to cultural shock and adjustment issues. I migrated from a small town in India to Brisbane, Australia and have undergone a lot of mental pressure to settle myself in this foreign terrain.
