The inspiring documentary film, E.O. Wilson—Of Ants and Men, showcases biologist Edward Osborne Wilson’s passion for preserving the biodiversity of our natural world. E.O. Wilson not only values the fascinating creatures (particularly ants) that he comes across during his research and in his daily life, but he also takes action and participates in the Gorongosa Restoration Project at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, Africa. The destruction of Gorongosa demonstrates the call for us—Homo sapiens—to realize how critical it is to concern ourselves with protecting the very ecosystems that have molded us into the complex species that we are; according to E.O. Wilson, “We adapted over millions of years to wild environments…We really need them” (CITE?). The better effort we make to understand that we are a part of this large, interdependent ecological community, the better equipped we become in not only being
Dave Matthews’ use of imagery throughout “Ants Marching” provides the reader with a sound understanding and interpretation of his overall message. To apply this rhetorical strategy, he incorporates several extended metaphors to life with which one can connect and acknowledge. The reader can identify an example of this tactic when Matthews opens with a quote stating, “He wakes up in the morning / Does his teeth, bite to eat, and he is rolling / Never changes a thing / The week ends, the week begins” (Matthews). On a surface level, this quote discusses a common occurrence for the protagonist of this song; however, on a more profound level, this text addresses Matthews’ leading intent: people need to take the chances they still have and escape
In the Western world, Butterfly represents a stereotype of the Oriental woman. The stereotype of an obedient, submissive, and domestic Asian woman appeals to Westerners through other media beside the opera; for example, the “mail-order bride trade” catalogues and TV spots. The story of the white devil Pinkerton and a sub-missive Asian girl Cio-Cio-San has become a cultural myth in Western world. In M. Butterfly, David Henry Hwang parodies and deconstructs this myth. In his play, a French diplomat Rene Gallimard fantasizes that he is Pinkerton and his Chinese lover Song is his Butterfly. However, as Hwang says in the “Afterword” of the play, Gallimard “realizes that it is he who has been But...
The mid-1800s contains its special genre of writing. Perhaps it was the wild American frontier or maybe a writer’s whim to write something different, yet nevertheless, American Romanticism evolved. Writers like James Fennimore Cooper filled their stories with heroes and villains, war and peace, love and strife throwing all sorts of trials towards their characters. Like puppets writers control their characters actions and emotion; Cooper’s characters are flat, predictable people with much happening to them. Two of his characters Hawkeye and Mague will be discussed to determine whether any internal change occurred.

The production of new ideas spark momentum for thought, the fabrication of machinery paves the way for innovations, and the expansion of human connection has led to new forms of participation. Historically, eras have been defined by the highlights of its period: the Stone Age allowed the development of tools while the Gold Age refined methods already produced to be more efficient in their purposes. If these are the things that define these eras, what has defined the twenty first century? In the later parts of the twentieth century, new technology like computer software ignited the world in a way never seen before. People all around the world were given access to connect with one another through the click of a button, and from there, the possibilities
What are you going to do when you know that the person you love is dying right in front of your eyes? What is there that you can do? The Fault in Our Stars is a touching story that brings out all the possibilities of those questions. The real issue here is that is everything being done so that the person you love dies happily and peacefully? There are many instances in this story where you can tell that the main characters Hazel and Augustus really truly love each other because both make choices that will eventually end up in the others happiness. Even though there are the loving instances, there are also times where you the reader are asking yourself; ‘Is this the right thing that’s happening?’ Another factor that this book holds is that it draws you in with it’s confusion. Everything makes sense, but yet in another sense, it doesn't. This book is an emotional train wreck, and when and if you do read this I recommend you have tissues somewhere near by.
We are the Ants is a story written by Shaun David Hutchinson. The main character, Henry, has a life that started out broken and continues to break. What I mean by broken is that his dad leaves, his mom does drugs to cope with pain, his boyfriend committed suicide, he is assaulted, his only stable adult has an unforgiving disease, he’s constantly bullied, and he gets abducted by aliens regularly. Henry has to deal with school, past and present relationships, and other people all while taking care of his mental and family problems. Nobody believes the frail, mentally unstable teenager when he says he has been abducted by aliens. The “sluggers” abduct Henry because he is special. They choose him to make a decision that could end the world as
As Little Big Man, directed by Arthur Penn opens up and introduces the Main character Jack Crabb, the sole survivor of General Custer’s last stand, tells the modern day historian about his multiple experiences in life. I felt as if the plot of the movie was a bit intricate , Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman)multiple professions or hobbies are a bit too outlandish for one individual. But these different hobbies added some humor to the plot which balanced out the complexity of the plot. It was amusing that Jack had many different lives all encompassed into one life.
Chang portrays the complexity of Henry’s character by showing the conflict that he faces both in his personal and professional life. His confusion towards his own Cultural identity is noticed in his relationships with his co-workers as well as with his family. His personal relationship with his family, especially with his father and his wife exemplifies the clash between the two cultures which seems to tear Henry apart. Leila, Henry’s wife, seems to epitomize the traditional American Culture which Henry tries very hard to be a part of. Her forthright nature along with the independence and individuality contradicts the stereotypical qualities of an Asian wife. However, Henry’s desperation is seen in his forgiving attitude towards Leila’s action and behavior. His deter...
The initial interaction between Lucy and Cheng Huan at the store creates an interesting dynamic of uneven attraction. Objects and figures within the frame emphasizes this fact, such as an unconscious Lucy in the center. The organization of objects, and set-pieces in the shot is referred to as the setting. As an integral component in mise-en-scene, setting helps locate the actors and even control how the story is. The one-sided adoration prevalent in this scene exemplifies the possible alternative motivations behind Cheng’s kindness. In these shots, Lucy’s face always points towards the camera so that the audience can see both characters clearly, and while Lucy sleeps, Cheng stares at her with considerable intensity. By acknowledging his lust, many of his actions can be interpreted in a completely different way. At (46:22) Cheng ...
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
Fighting off a few million ants is not easy when they will eat you alive if you get in their way. In “Leiningen Versus the Ants,” Leiningen, originally a self-assured, courageous, and stern plantation owner, changes drastically after his deadly encounter with a caboodle of ants to become a boastful and yet still, courageous survivor.
Anthropocentrism is the school of thought that human beings are the single most significant entity in the universe. As a result, the philosophies of those with this belief reflect the prioritization of human objectives over the well-being of one’s environment. However, this is not to say that anthropocentric views neglect to recognize the importance of preserving the Earth. In fact, it is often in the best interests of humans to make concerted efforts towards sustaining the environment. Even from a purely anthropocentric point of view, there are three main reasons why mankind has a moral duty to protect the natural world.
