The Diary of Anne Frank is the diary of a young girl during one of the bleakest time periods ever to take place in world history. Addressed to her diary, her dearest friend during her grim time in the annex of her father’s office, each passage was written with various displays of hope, resilience, and faith in Anne’s written thoughts and documented actions throughout the three years she spent living in fear and misery amongst other Jews hiding away during World War 2.
Hope is a key theme in The Diary of Anne Frank Staying true to her optimistic attitude as she grows into a young woman, Anne Frank’s hope stands strong despite her ordeal and there are many ways that she exhibits it throughout the two years she stays in the annex. She looks

towards the future, hoping to make the world a better place after experiencing it at its worst and follow her ambitions. An example of this is found as she looks towards the future with a definite attitude. This passage was written on the 11th of April 1944: I know what I want, I have a goal, I have opinions, a religion and love. […] If God lets me live, I’ll achieve more than Mother ever did, I’ll make my voice heard, I’ll go out into the world and work for mankind! (Frank, 2007: 262) These passionate words are a clear example of how she looks towards the future with a goal in her mind and a strong idea of what she wishes to do and achieve, should she live to see the end of the war. Anne continuously writes of her passions and ambitions that she intends to pursue when she leaves the annex, stating that she doesn’t want to have lived in vain like other people and can’t imagine having to be a woman like her mother, who are forgotten (Frank, 2007: 262). Furthermore, the foundation of Anne’s hope can be found on her firm resilience, a trait developed in the face of great adversity. To adapt to her new lifestyle in the annex, Anne adjusts her regular daily life to match with her new surroundings, recognizing that there were things she had to give up after moving into her new living space. She continues her studies whilst in hiding, continues to participate in exercises, examined herself as a person and found places to improve and learned to live with the fear of war. Evidence of this is found on the 15th of July 1944, in which Anne contemplates the difficulty of being a young person growing up in the annex: It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. (Frank, 2007: 332) Anne understands that her life may never be the same after the war and that it’s “impossible for [her] to build [her] life on a foundation of chaos, suffering and death” (Frank, 2007: 332), but also makes it clear that she will hold strong to her beliefs until she finally realizes them.
Despite acknowledging the fact that she may suffer greatly, during and after the war, and perhaps even die, Anne Frank confesses that, although it may seem ludicrous, she will cling onto her principles because of her faith in …show more content…
others. Anne displays continuous acts of faith in both God and people throughout her diary such as the last passage.
She states that someone “who has courage and faith will never die in misery” (Frank, 2007: 211) and follows the statement as she exhibits in later passages. Anne is a devout Jewish girl and thanks God for the gifts of love, joy (Frank, 2007: 211, paragraph 2) and protection (Frank, 2007: 260, paragraph 5) and, as seen in the previous quote, admits to still believing that people are “truly good at heart”. In this passage, Anne announces her faith in God and her faith in the Jewish community on the 11th of April 1944:
We must put our feelings aside, we must be brave and strong, bear discomfort without complaint, do whatever is in our power and trust in God. The time will come when we’ll be people again and not just Jews! […] It’s God who made us the way we are, but it’s also God who will lift us up again. […]
Be brave! Let us remember our duty and perform it without complaint. There will be a way out. God has never deserted our people. Throughout the ages Jews have had to suffer, through the ages they’ve gone on living, and the centuries of suffering have only made them stronger. The weak shall fall and the strong shall survive and not be defeated! (Frank, 2007: 261 - 262).
This diary entry is a clear example of Anne’s best characteristics, not only displaying her outstanding conviction in God and others, but her significant optimism and her exceptional spirit in the
face of hatred, alienation and war. The Diary of Anne Frank is a historical piece on the remarkable faith, hope and resilience of a young girl hidden away in an annex from the terrors of her times with only one true friend, her beloved diary. Anne Frank is a prime example of a young person’s courage in times of fear and continues to be an inspiration to all who are experiencing times of difficulty or adversity, living up to her ambitions of working for mankind through the voice she sought to make heard ages after her death
The “Diary of Anne Frank” is a real diary written by Anne Frank, during the time of the Holocaust. She describes her days hiding in a secret annex with seven other people. Some days they got along and others they didn’t, but in the end they all respected each other. In the “Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne Frank says, “ I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” This message serves as a theme throughout the diary. Throughout the diary, she explains how the people she spent her days with were good people at heart.
In “ The Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne passively resists by writing in her diary because it helps her maintain hope. When Mr.Frank returns to Amsterdam after the war, he finds Anne’s diary and reads about how Anne still believes that “people are really good at heart,” despite everything that happened(352). Mr.Frank is amazed that Anne can find the
I told you why Anne had felt this way during her ordeal, and what this reveals about her character and her views about life. Anne is a strong and heroic young girl who has a heart for others and she is very compassionate towards others. Which is a great quality to have in that time period she was going through? No one could have done it better than Anne. She helped people look at the good in the situations she was never the one mention the negative things. You think how you would react to this situation. Would you be buoyant? Or would you be colorless in this and always look at the crummy never say anything positive. All quotes can be found in the collections book pages
Anne Frank was a 13-year-old Jewish girl who was thrown into one of the worst periods in the history of the world; the Holocaust. Though she went through awful things that many people will never experience, she always kept the faith that there was still some good in everyone. She once said, “Despite everything I still believe people are truly good at heart.” Her diary, which she kept while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, shows the triumph of her spirit over the evil in the world even through the pain of adolescence. The Franks and Van Dans were hiding and they suffered many hardships, mentally and physically. Many people in Anne’s situation would have become bitter and resentful, but Anne never would despair.
Anne's optimistic personality created the hope that she had for her future. Each day she could do nothing but just hope that one day everything will turn around and be better. In The Diary Of Anne Frank play, she expressed, "It'll pass, maybe not for hundreds of years, but someday..." Deep down inside, she had the hope that all of the disgusting things that Hitler alongside his army performed, would all vanish one day. She knew for the most part that the hatred may never go away, but imagining that it might, made things at least a bit better. Anne's situation was pure negativity, with almost nothing good about it. The only good thing that may have come out of it for her were the relationships that she created with everyone in hiding with her. From the Van Daans, to Miep, she bonded amazing friendships with each person involved. Aside from that, Anne's personality stuck out more than anyone's because of the hope that she had, in such a terrible situation.
Anne Frank has been hiding from the Nazis for about 25 months during the Holocaust, trying to stay alive. " Anne Frank's voice becomes the voice of six million vanished Jewish souls" (Diary). This shows how Anne is an important girl to the world and proves that she should be respected as one of the deaths due to the Nazis. Her voice will always be known as the girl from the Salemian 2 Holocaust that tried her best to stay alive and wanted to live and did not want to get caught. When Anne Frank says "I am grateful to God for giving this gift, this possibility of developing myself"(Grobman).
Anne’s diary began on her thirteenth birthday. She had a normal life for a girl of her age, and valued the same things as any girl; she loved being with her friends, enjoyed school and already had established a passion for writing which she expressed through her diary. She first wrote “I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support,” it is established that Anne, although a very social young girl, felt that she could not confide in her friends. The tone with which she wrote and the trivial matters that she wrote about exemplify her young age and lack of maturity. She wrote for the sake of writing, and wrote about the happenings in her life. When the first signs of anti-Semitism started to show, signs of worry showed through her writing, but she never wrote too deeply about it.
As she continued to survive throughout the war she was showing persistence, persistence means to continue firmly in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. She said the following sentences, which made me think of her as persistent, "It’s impossible for me to be all smiles one day and venomous the next. I’d rather choose the golden mean, which isn’t so golden, and keep my thoughts to myself.” This quote makes me feel that she was especially persistent throughout the war in keeping morale up in the annex, and that she cares for those in it. I also think that this quote, while some may have interpreted it as Anne being selfish, shows that Anne wishes she could be more mature like all the people around her, so that she could hopefully stop the arguing. All of this information shows you how persistent that Anne was during the war.
In addition to The Diary of Anne Frank, hope is also shown in the piece Night written by Elie Wiesel. When young Eliezer is faced with possible death with his family. He and his father are separated from his mother and sister. As they march on they get closer to their death, a fiery pit. Then, at one point a man says, “You must never lose faith, even when the sword hangs over your head. That’s the teaching of our sages….” Faith is a way to show hope, and faith will never fade within
The Diary of Anne Frank has many themes, including love, youth and isolation. Anne loves Peter, but she is a young girl and she is naive and gullible. She tries to experience something nice in a time of sadness and darkness. She is young, a thirteen year old trying to survive the Holocaust. Also there is isolation, her ‘family’ is living in an attic in the middle of Europe.
The name “Anne Frank” is synonymous with hope, optimism, and belief in human good, even in times of relentless evil. Although she only lived to be fifteen, Anne is known and respected throughout the world for the humanistic light her work shed on an infamous time. Born June 12th, 1929, in Germany, she spent her early years in a middle-class Jewish-German family. However, the tranquility of the Frank family and 522,000 other German-Jews’ would be shattered by one of the most nefarious events in history, the Holocaust. Anne’s diary became an influential resource in understanding historical and emotional aspects of the Holocaust. Although she was young, Anne Frank is the greatest diarist of European history because she preserved a critical time in history, her work captured the human experience of the Holocaust, and her ideals of hope and optimism remain influential throughout our world today.
Over the time of 25 months, Anne recorded her experiences while hiding from German troops. Her diary describes the fears and emotional conflicts of people crowded together in secrecy. The diary also had its good times apart from its bad such as funny and memorable moments. These include birthday celebrations and Anne’s first experience with falling in love.
The Diary of Anne Frank portrayed perseverance in an individual's characteristics in times of despair. It displays that the way you live your life depends on one's perspective and mentality towards the world. Written by Anne Frank herself, this diary conveyed the perspective of a distraught teen living during the Holocaust. Anne writes about her feelings of isolation and loneliness, each diary entry maturing as time passes. Despite her situation that she was put i...
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl was a very distressing yet amazingly written book. Who would have thought that such a little person could have such a huge effect on the world? Anne?s father lived for many years after the war and made sure that Anne?s diary was published. Her diary was published in 1947 and was then made into a film. This diary helps people remember what Jews had to go through and hopefully reminds them of how lucky they are. By remembering, it is hoped that something like this will never happen again. This book was intriguing while incorporating many life lessons. Discrimination, unfair judgment, and racism are only a few of the many lessons that this book has to offer. With that, after reading this book, we have learned to not take the things we have for granted because in a matter of seconds, days, months, or even years, it could all be gone. As Anne said in her diary, ?In spite of everything, I still believe, people are truly good at heart?.
As Frank's diary continues, however, a depth of Frank’s personality and thoughts develops. In a somewhere in a book Anne Frank read, it said: “‘Deep down, the young are lonelier than the old (142).” Frank shows her insightfulness as she says, “Older people have an opinion about everything and are sure of themselves and their actions. It's twice as hard for us young people to hold on to our opinions at a time when ideals are being shattered and destroyed, when the worst side of human nature predominates when everyone has come to doubt truth, justice and God.” In the context of her situation, Jews are being highly discriminated against by Germany and the Nazi party, and are being put in concentration camps in order to be killed.
