In the Late nineteenth century the population was growing at a rapid pace. The country had people flooding the biggest cities in the country such as New York City and Chicago. These populations were gaining more and more people every single year and the country has to do something to make places for these people to live. The government would go on to create urban housing programs. These programs were created to make homes for these people to live in. At the time it provided a place for people to live but as the populations grew it became a more cramped and rundown area because of the large populations in one place. These reforms eventually led to these areas becoming dangerous, they were rundown, and it created a hole that was difficult for people to get out of.

Through her words you can create an image about the way poverty affects children. She goes through the book making great remarks on the topic. The different experiences that Esperanza goes through have a lot to connect with her family's financial status. She specifically describes her feelings about the poverty they live in through three of her short stories. The three short stories in which poverty seems to be an obstacle are The House on Mango Street, Our Good Day, and Chanclas. When the book begins the downgrading of Esperanza's esteem begins with it.

Gentrification is defined as the process by which the wealthy or upper middle class uproot poorer individuals through the renovation and rebuilding of poor neighborhoods. Many long-term residents find themselves no longer able to afford to live in an area, where the rent and property values are increasing. Gentrification is a very controversial topic, revealing both the positive and negative aspects of the process. Some of the more desirable outcomes include reduced crime rate, increased economic activity, and the building of new infrastructures. However, it is debated whether the negatives overwhelm the positive. An increase in the number of evictions of low-income families, often racial minorities can lead to a decline of diversity

Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers seeks to describe the sharp contrast between the lives of the inhabitants of Annawadi and the surrounding reflection of India’s thriving economy. Essentially, Boo’s documentation of the social, political and economic factors that shape daily choices in Annawadi, a slum and conflation of a variety of cultures and religions, creates an accurate depiction of life beyond the misleading exterior of Mumbai. Abdul’s expertise in trash sifting transforms his family’s fortune, their new standing beyond “subsistence” evoking jealousy in neighbors. The family of eleven inhabits one of the huts in the “squatter settlements” located between “elegant modernities”
Set in the slums of India’s Mumbai district, Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo guides readers into the undercity of Annawadi. Separated from the flourishing world city merely by “a coconut-tree-lined thoroughfare”(Boo 68) and billboards, illegally residing residents of Annawadi lives and stories are documented by Boo during her stay. As residents acclimate to her presence, they continue with their daily lives, and her work follows. From the female slumlord who dreams to hold power to the young boy with his head in the clouds, Behind displays the hopes that even the poorest and richest people have: to be better than their surroundings. But below these aspirations lies darker routes to success, including corruption. Forevers warns
The hopes and dreams of Annawadi’s citizens breed corruption. In hopes of leaving Annawadi, Asha resorts to scams and cheating to make them come true. For her, it is the only effective method to make those dreams happen. However, in reality, the people living in Annawadi were doomed from the start. Either having a dream come true or even a jump in social class is a rarity that does not favor the people. Hope is what makes them delusional and blind from reality. This is what’s holding back most of the people of Annawadi. They sit around and hope that other people will make a change, that the Corporator will stop the raze, and that they won’t be forgotten. After Kalu died,no one realised that his death was already set in stone. Boo wrote “ To Annawadi boys, Kalu had been a star. To the authorities of the over city, he was a nuisance to be dispensed with” (168). Kalu’s mistake was giving police intel on criminals, and therefore died a brutal death. His punishment for being naive was paid by a quick case, false cause of death, and no autopsy. In addition, Sanjay was also treated like Kalu. Boo wrote, “So Sanjay’s mother learned only what another mother, who slept on the pavement, dared to whisper: ‘Your boy died with fear in his heart.’” (174). The people who live in Annawadi who had dreams are forced to face the truth. When Abdul was in jail, Mirchi had to sort garbage to earn money for the family. The boy who dreamed of working in a fancy hotel and declared to never sort garbage was forced to eat his words. Once Mirchi started working his mother would complain about how terrible he was. Mirchi had to take up any job he could, even multiple ones. After realizing his dreams were for a boy he told his sister that they were “down to earn-and-eat.” (238). Unlike Mirchi, people like Abdul doesn’t waste their time on false hope, instead, they
The following passage from The House on Mango Street reveals the fear of losing one’s culture by coming to America. In the chapter No Speak English, Esperanza describes a Mexican woman, who she calls Mamacita, who comes to live with her husband down the street from her. Whenever the woman arrives, the author notes that she never comes out. Some speculate it is because she was a bigger woman and the three flights of stairs are difficult for her, but the author believes it is because she only knows a few words in English. Esperanza picks up on the woman’s fear of losing her culture when she says,
